How lucky we are as humans to have evolved from a primordial soup into a species that can revel in such beauty as this requiem by Maurice Duruflé. What a gift we have been given.

I was totally unfamiliar with this piece and the composer until 15 minutes ago and now I am listening to it with the sound cranked up, pumping GLORY into my brain and chasing all of the bad news away and filling me with hope and beauty.
Thank Your for putting this up.

I heard this with Durufle conducting and his wife playing organ (with a vocal quartet) in Washington, DC, in 1970. Gorgeous, sumptuous, dazzling. Unbelievable beauty. I am so moved by this. Thank you.

The most beautiful Requiem composed in the Twentieth century and probably in musical history. I would even go as far as saying that this masterpiece is probably the most choral work I´ve ever heard. I´m not a particularly devout man, but by listening to this work, one can tell that the composer had a deep loving Catholic faith and one can even feel Durufle´s faith as our own. His Messe Cum Jubilo is another absolutely masterpiece that deserves more performances. How Durufle published so little of his work is something to regret. The man was a complete musical genius.

+Claudio uruguay Indeed, the composer's output is small, but some of us believe that's because he crafted every work very carefully. Also he and his wife were busy being organists (more so Mrs., actually), so he lacked time to compose extensively. May I make a recommendation? Another fine use of Gregorian chant is his four unaccompanied Motets. The first of these, Ubi caritas, has become standard choir repertoire. Enjoy!

Compared to other composers, he composed so little. Yet still gave so much. The reason why he is not a household name probably has a lot to do with how theatrics in the arts can often override the purist of creations.

This marvelous performance brought tears to my eyes with its passion, clarity of long-range architecture, dramatic ebb and flow and beautiful choral sound. It convinced me to have my students at Kean University perform it this semester with the reduced orchestral version with organ, still a big orchestra. What a sublime piece!

This conductor knows how to pace. Only what I call "the chosen few" in conducting do this. What I don't understand is how I haven't discovered him until today. I guess I'm turning into a hermit. I thank The Lord for TH-cam! Even if this gets taken down, at least I can feel reassured that an interpreter of orchestral music lives on, as I have almost lost hope in so many "conductors" of today.

For me, the mezzosoprano solo Pie Jesu is the emotional apogee of Duruflé’s mass, with its central theme of bereavement. Pius in church Latin is the capital of a vast province of connotation that has shrunk to a little neighborhood in its English descendant pious. I would translate Pie Jesu as “O merciful Jesus” in this supplicatory context, but in other contexts Jesus could equally be gentle, upstanding, upright, respectable, principled, praiseworthy, noble, honest, just, forgiving, healing, blessed, benign,…, and, yes, pious. Pius never has a negative edge to my knowledge, while pious today often does.
Here I envision an inconsolable mother, not yet old, who has lost her children. She pours out her grief in the guise of pious supplication, and the whole pious congregation, even the pious priest, sobs with her. Barbara Kozelj captures bereavement heartbreakingly, not only in her luminous voice, but also in her expression as she sings.

This is a particularly fine recording with video production to match. The acid-test for me is how the conductor interprets the final 8 bars of the Introit/Kyries - so often this is rushed through when actually it should be a gentle and exquisite "landing". Spanjaard does this really beautifully and you can see how much the flutes/oboe are enjoying that particular cadence. I'm guessing this is a TV recording so the sound is not the best which is a pity, and the timing is out in numerous places, but I'm going to forgive that because this interpretation has just the right feel.

These are prayers in the Old Latin (Byzantine) or (Gregorian Chants) adapted to orchestra. Although its harmonic procedure could be said to remain within the bounds of Tonality, one seems to be free from the shackle of any established key or tonic, hence why it is so otherworldly and immeasurable.

There are three versions of the Requiem - this full orchestral version, one with organ accompaniment only and one with chamber orchestra and organ. It's worth hearing all three and making your own decision. I love this performance by Ed Spanjaard and there is a beautiful recording of the chamber orchestra version by the Corydon Singers and the ECO conducted by Matthew Best.

Agreeing with Claudio, these two Requiem masterpieces are peerless given all respects. Hearing them, as I often do, back to back, is one of the great pleasures of music massaging the soul, as I call it. I also realize there are the holdouts who prefer the big German masterpieces, heavy music in every sense, even dramatic. But the French. . .these two composers are transcendental given their compositional pastoral and spiritual emphasis. Hearing both Requiems in a music hall is arguably one of the most profound listening experiences I have ever had or will have. www.richholtzin.com
