En ouvrant son opéra par un prélude pour cordes d’une économie de moyens inédite, Verdi affirmait en 1853 sa volonté de bousculer les conventions et les normes. Là n’est pas la moindre des radicalités de son oeuvre : sa « Traviata » met implacablement à nu la violence d’une société qui prône la jouissance matérielle et finit par sacrifier une innocente victime sur l’autel de la morale bourgeoise. Simon Stone aime travailler au corps à corps les pièces du répertoire pour les entraîner vers des territoires plus intimes. Ce metteur en scène, qui compte parmi les plus remarqués au théâtre aujourd’hui, fait ses débuts très attendus à l’Opéra national de Paris.

D'habitude je ne suis pas fan de la mise en scène des opéras modernes... mais là je dois dire que je suis bluffé, c'est tout simplement génial.
Mise en scène que Verdi aurait approuvé puisque c était son vœux lors de la première, chose qui lui a été refusé.

J'aimerais croire que Traviata à Paris ne soit pas victime de la "perception moderne" terrible, maintenant destructive, de la "nouvelle conception" destructrice d'illusions.
Hélas ! j'ai assisté au massacre, il ne reste plus grand chose, les pauvres chanteurs font ça qu'ils peuvent pour mettre un peu de beauté dans cette mise en scène si laide !

I mostly don't like modern settings, but this one was on point, even though trashcans are not pretty. She has an amazing voice and I would have liked it even better if she had had her natural, kinky, curly hair. Then it would have been perfect, now it is almost perfect.

Previous wave of trolls criticized everyone simply for not being Maria Callas.

Je viens de louer La Traviata, sur « L’Opera chez soi », magnifique distribution, Pretty Yende magistrale… mais impossible d’écouter plus de quelques minutes tant la prise de son est de mauvaise qualité, saturation, orchestre par moment trop discret, bruit du décor tournant…
Une catastrophe, je regrette mon achat car je ne pourrais pas en profiter.
Wonderful singing by two very talented artists, but to think that this is a mounted production of this eternally popular masterpiece at the Paris Opera- the set is horrible! An insult to the artists, the audience and to Verdi. Terrible modern "concepts"
Verdi was modern - I think he would have loved this production.
Obviously, the modern way of singing operas, especially italian ones, does not know the glorious legendary singers of the past. Almost all singers of the modern day are trained in wrong ways. They do not know 'chest voice, chiaroscuro or appogio.
I am sick of listening to this kind of opera performance.

Just try to listen to the above videos. They are very instructive and will open your eyes.
On the positive side, both artists were technically accurate, quite agile and reasonably sensitive to the musical form. However, the tenor has a voice as presented that IMHO is much too lyric and soft for Verdi, even the role of Alfredo in La Traviata. I found much of his vocalizing to be the equivalent of "crooning" as one once heard in 1940's-1950's pop music. I thought I heard a bit of a tremolo from the soprano in two instances, where there should be none of course. She does have a very pleasing vocal quality but in this clip I cannot ascertain whether she has the heft for Verdi which seems somewhat doubtful based on this rendition. To say that their performance is not in the received tradition of Italian Grand Opera for this work is certainly appropriate.
I don't care. It was an amazing night for me.

Für mich hat Pretty Yende mit eine der schönsten Stimmen unter den Opernsängerinnen.

Im Übrigen finde ich, dass Pretty Yende ebenso brilliert, wie Anna Netrebko vor ein paar Jahren, einfach zauberhaft!

C'est la version Gershwin de la Traviatta. Cette chanteuse, bonheur de tout ce qui est progressiste, même en opéra, n'a ni la voix, ni le style du rôle, quelle regarde du coté de lakmé et encore, un peu trop vulgaire sans doute. Quand au ténor, rossini lui conviendrait mieux. Mais comme disait ma grand-mère quand on a pas de grives on mange du merle.

The author of the libretto wanted the play to always be set in contemporary time. In the opera this scene happens in a room next to where Violetta´s lavish party from the opening act is happening, and Violetta retreats to this room because she is feeling unwell, so she wants to be alone. It makes sense to me that a lavish party of today´s bourgeoisie would happen in a rented space and that the room next to the party where there would be no one would be the service room.

Traviata caused a scandal because it WAS set in modern times and was the story of someone people the audience knew! She'd only died 6 years prior to the premier!! Opera will not survive if we embalm it.

@@BighustleNine et toi tu ne sais pas ce qu'est le vrai opéra.. La voix de la soprano est déséquilibrée, petite, constrictive et le larynx très haut. La voix de poitrine du ténor n'est pas correctement développée et les voyelles sont breathy. Ce n'est pas de l'opéra, c'est un truc moderne bizarre, les voix ne sont pas humaines. Écoute plutôt Helen Traubel ou Enrico Caruso

Verdi would turn over in his grave if he saw what they did to his opera. The music and the singers are beautiful but the rest is trash, the garbage cans fit perfectly onto the stage. Sorry Pretty Yende that you have to perform on a stage full of garbage.

Since I am not into hideous productions AND singing, no thanks! Pretty Yende has a relatively nice voice, that is the only positive thing I am able to think of here, although one cannot understand a word she is singing. The tenor is a disaster🙁 and the staging is garbage, I once had the misfortune of sitting through the entire thing in a live stream from the Vienna state opera, hardly made it through what is normally a splendid opera. Thanks to another mindless director for ruining Verdi!
