Do u know how-well I know how steamers get their electricity but do u know how specifically things like those Christmas lights managed to get powered/did u see if where they were plugged in?
@trainmanben1 it starts at oaks park, goes forward about a mile up to the Sellwood bridge, reverses to Portland, and pulls back to oaks park again. i don't know the exact mileage, but it's about 45 min round-trip.
@ThomasRivette Not too loud. It's much louder when you're outside. But from the cab, it's a bit quieter. It's probably louder in the cab when the engine's at speed though.
Actually, the steam whistle is located on top of the engine next to the smoke stack. The gold horn is a separate air horn that was used during 4449's revenue career. The Daylights often encountered thick, heavy fog on their runs from LA to San Fransisco. Since horns can be heard much more easily through fog than whistles can, the engines were fitted with these horns to be blown as a warning device for road crossings. 4449's horn still works, but it's not used very much.
At the time, I was volunteering with ORHF and helping out as a trail host for the Holiday Express. I was also doing some video work for the organization as well.
I got a cab ride on the SP 4449 last December on the Holiday Express, with 3 other crew members (and surprisingly, Doyle wasn't running when I was onboard).
EvergreenRailVideo I did end up getting a ride on the 4449 during Holiday Express the second day it was running this year. A video of the ride is up on my channel, though the brake audio is static due to it being recorded on my phone.

I'm going on a cab ride tomorrow! Can't wait!

The sound of the exhaust starting at 1:50 is amazing, almost musical.
Love that 4449. Thanks for a great video!
I noticed that there was no rope attached to the whistle lever. There usually was.
Wow! You have no idea how lucky you are!!!

Yeah the whistle is oddly at the front of the engine. That's that gold horn thing above the front of the smokebox.

Has this engine always had a SH Steam pyrometer?
Bob K All the GS northerns had them as standard equipment.
Engineer sounded a little bit crusty towards the end.
How do you get a cab ride on the SP 4449? Do you just yell "Hey, Doyle, can I come up there for an hour and a half?"
