Getting to ride in the cab of a legendary steam locomotive is a rare sensation within itself. As per other comments on this video, keeping history alive is one of the greatest acts possible, and yeah, I wish there were more steamers in full running order today.
Truly awesome. I really enjoyed my cab ride in the MRSRR Polson Logging #70. The 4449 would be one of the toppers to that experience. Thank you for sharing!

a good ol fashioned work ethic and dedication to your job. plus alot of the later steamers had enclosed cabs. plus its not the winters but summers that get bad. remember your burning coal, oil or wood to create steam so on a hot summer day is when it would suck!
You lucky stud. That is all I have to say... And I thought getting a ca ride on the Niles Canyon steamer was cool. This is definetly of my list of things to do before I die.
Well said. If you look inside the cubbyhole at the back of the tender (maybe the ‘auxiliary tender’) you will see my name is one of the ones on the plaque in there commemorating the ‘tank rats’. Any of your fillings come out? 😉
@ecoRfan @HaloCE14 Well growing up on the old SP Coast line the 4449 was part of the nostalgia there, and finally being able to live in Portland and come and work on this engine and actually ride in it in return for all the hard work is really just a dream come true and I will keep doing it, even if it means staying up 24+ hours "been done already plenty of times" If it keeps it running, I'll do it again.
I've always wanted to drive the Sp Daylight 4449!!! It's one of my many dreams, how did you get to? I feel like they should at least make a few more GS-4 locomotives, so that the 4449 won't feel like she's the last of her kind. What do you think? Reply please.
beans lmao yeah no one drives her unless Doyle McCormack says they can. Also to fabricate a new steam loco of her size would cost millions of dollars of parts and would need skills that haven’t been taught in 50 years at least
@joelofpaloalto If I had the chance to I would have gotten more video of the gorge, but I wasn't the only one in the cab, far from, with other crew members and the pilot everyone pretty much have to take a turn at the window. Also a lot of the video I took were VERY shakey because that engine is REALLY bouncy going 60mph and it wouldn't have been worth wasting everyones time with a crappy shakey video
Delaware Train Videos: Its not a 6 brake, its an 8ET brake. They were standard equipment on all modern steam. The 26 brake wasn't invented until after the demise of steam and was only ever put on during the preservation era.
Southern Pacific Should Restore all scrapped GS-4s to Pull the Daylights All over America even in Washington DC and Dallas, Texas. Also, if Southern Pacific restores all scrapped GS-4s, 4449 will never be alone in his class again.
Also, Southern Pacific Should Allow 4449 and all GS-4s (If Restored) to travel 110MPH while Pulling all Daylights all around USA Including in Washington DC and Dallas, Texas.
Von Millard Manalastas Two things that you messed up on 1) southern pacific doesn't exist anymore 2) you can't restore something that has been scrapped
Scrapped means cut into smaller peices of metal and made into other things. So the only engines that exist are 4460 4449... plus SP dosn't exist anymore.

Drewster327 which chime whistle is that
You realize theres a 1000+ fire five feet in front of them, right?
Oil flame is more in the 2300+ range. Just sayin'.
Wow, Im surprised she has a 6 brake. I always thought like most modern mainline steamers, she had a 26 brake.
Delaware Train Videos: Its not a 6 brake, its an 8ET brake. They were standard equipment on all modern steam. The 26 brake wasn't invented until after the demise of steam and was only ever put on during the preservation era.
Doyle knows how to work that whistle... and that 4-8-4. Check out my channel for an uphill segment on the outbound trip to Wishram.

Don't worry if they were dumb enough to not know that theres a giant flame right there then they shouldn't notice that.
