- IGN staff has voted we've officially chosen our choice for the Best Game of 2023. From 16 nominees to one winner, check out which game won our Game of the Year as well as the worthy runner-ups that came close to beating out our first choice pick during the voting.

Any year that Zelda, Mario and Larian release a new game, it is gonna be one of the best year of gaming PERIOD. Example: 2017: Breath of the wild, Mario Odessey, Divinity Original sins 2; 2023: Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Wonders, Baldur Gate 3.

There's also the theory of whenever Horizon series drops a new game, there will be a GOTY release shortly after. 2017 came Horizon Zero Dawn, and shortly after 3 weeks later, BOTW came out and was GOTY. Horizon Forbidden West came out in 2022 and shortly after, Elden Ring came out and was GOTY

Look to Hogwarts Legacy or Spiderman 2 if you want to see busywork. Side content in those games is various levels of shallow busywork.
Looking back at 2023 will show it was one hell of a year for gamers!

What an insane year for games. All of the entries on here are super worthy, and that doesn't even include Hi-Fi Rush, Cocoon, Viewfinder, Dead Space, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Super Mario Wonder, Hogwarts Legacy, and Spider-Man 2!

Even after playing through so many other great titles this year, TOTK takes the cake for me as well. It's just a uniquely beautiful masterpiece in every way. Well deserved win!

What an amazing year for gaming. TotK isn’t my #1, I didn’t love the building and so the game being so focused on it deterred me from doing a lot of the open world puzzle solving. The main temples are phenomenal however, and the game is certainly a technical anomaly. Still don’t understand how this is running on my switch.

Kinda sad that Alan Wake 2 didn’t win any GOTY awards, visually and writing wise, it’s one of the most impressive games I’ve played in a long time.

The fact that major game developers shiat on BG3 and told their fan bases not to expect that type work and dedication within their own games goes to show you BG3 is the true game of the year, and possibly the past decade.

The crucial thing missing from Breath of the Wild in TOTK is the ZEN!! Breath of the Wilds exploration was ZEN AF and TOTK is too busy and overstuffed. Pro-Tip: Turn on "Pro Mode" for the display and it becomes much more immersive.

Well done IGN, totally agree with the choice. Thank you for recognizing a game which will be remembered as a mind blowing game in a 2017 portable console, making the impossible to run it with the best physics ever seen. And of course... We can't forget the memorable moments Ganondorf and Rauru left to us. Game period

Apart from the fact it’s one of the best open world maps of all time; what you do in it has also been changed drastically, and HUGE amounts of new content and areas have been added as well. Even if they removed the map from the last game, you’re still getting a game and content better than the vast majority of what released this year.
Because those who haven't played it at all, all they say is "it's the same game" when it's so not.

My big complaints with the first OP were that the stories were entirely disconnected from each other, and some basic battles were absolute grindfests. Was any of this fixed in the sequel?
