Jake didn't want to be embarrassed, Curtis had time to shoot but waited for him and toyed with him. Not justified obviously but a strange risk to take in the hood.
that was the 90s in New York when it was cold like that because that kid thought he was nice (which he was)but this was when it was a harder time in the hood when rhier wasnt much to do before smartphones and playstations was only basketball, bikes or arcades if u had money and balls lol, good times but it was dangerous also.
I can't believe a grown man shot five times and killed a little kid simply because the kid was beating him in a game of basketball. It's understandable to be frustrated if you keep losing at something, but not to the point where you would shoot and kill somebody. It's not that kid's fault that the man is a sucky player. Talk about some serious IED.
i know this is just a movie but something like that probably happened in real life..now that kid had so much talent and skill who knows where it could have taken him? but he was killed over dumb shit. smh thats our world
This was definitely the 90s,it was hard and deadly, not much to do but play badketball, ride bikes, collect sports cards/trade em or hit the arcades if u had money and balls lol because u could lose you're life from all 4.good times but definitely dangerous.

I'm not a prejudice person or anything like that, but why some Black dudes get mad over a basketball game when they lose, after they lose they get ready to FIGHT!
I've played a lot of pickup basketball in my day. Two things: 1. Race don't really make a difference. Black, white, hispanic, etc. everyone gets mad. 2. Something like this has never come close to happening on the court. Only in the movies and on very rare occasion it happens in the ghetto.
Coming from Memphis. I can attest this BS happens all the time on the bbal court. You do NOT want to cross up and shake up pookie and embarrass him in front of his ninjas and them hizzos. You might as well let him win. At least you'll live.
@@2bjjones I'm 4rom Memphis as well & the mentality of ppl in this city is absurd & pointless & at the same time r nothing but a bunch of followers instead of being themselves. I question my own community when it comes to scenes like this...when I first saw this scene,I once had a very difficult time watching it. It was wrong on so many levels.the most tragic scene in all of black Cinema in my opinion.
@MillieIsIncredible As you had pointed out, it's understandable to get frustrated if you keep repeatedly losing at something, but it's sometimes not okay to be a sore loser, let alone get violent to the point where you would shoot someone. If you keep losing at something, you should work on and improve your skills with it, or accept the fact that even if you have skills, another person might be better than you at it, in which you should improve the skills you already have.
@MillieIsIncredible I was extremely shocked when that man, whose name is Jake I believe, shot that boy and killed him, because it was completely unprovoked and unnecessary. I know life in the hood is bad, but I never thought it would be that bad; however, I have never lived in the hood so I can't necessarily rate the level of violence there. It's been a while since I've watched this movie, but according to other comments, Jake may have been murdered; it serves him right.
all the movie, he looks sad to have to live in this cruel reality and to have to sell dope to try to get out of it. But at the same time there is all this rage, pain and sadness in him, powerfull movie, awesome acting!

@MillieIsIncredible By IED, do you mean Intermittent Explosive Disorder? Because if so, I can definitely agree with that. It's just too obvious. Saying that the guy, who shot and murdered the kid, has IED would be somewhat of an understatement, as well.
That wasn't right for that guy to shoot and murder those two innocent children. I'm taking a stand against his senseless violence. I just don't feel that that was the right OR Christian thing to do in that instance. Just my opinion ...
This scene broke my heart as a kid man damn.
Me too.
The only girl who was down with fresh is gone. He feels all alone in the world now.
