The latest Vauxhall Corsa is miles better than the car it replaced, offering a much more convincing blend of performance, economy, comfort and driving pleasure. It looks good, boasts one of the best petrol engines in its class and has benefited hugely from the thoroughly modern underpinnings shared with the latest Peugeot 208.
There’s plenty to separate the two closely linked cars, however. Inside and out, the Vauxhall looks and feels unique; sharp, modern lines mean the Corsa looks better than it ever has, while the comfortable interior boasts plenty of good-quality trim and up-to-date tech. The Corsa's chief rival - the Ford Fiesta - was taken off sale in 2022, but the Vauxhall has soldiered on to become one of last year's best selling cars. In this video, Nicola Hume gets behind the wheel to find out why it's so popular.

...I dont understand why the car makers are claiming "everyone wants SUVs!"
They don't. Car makers are only offering SUVs over smaller cars because their profit margins are bigger. Car manufacturers in fact getting greedy and dictating what consumers want. They can p*** off, because as finances tighten all round, consumers will go elsewhere and that's where Vauxhall is aiming with its corsa.
The Ford Fiesta ending must have been music to Vauxhall/Opels ears. One less competitor

      Aching backs?
That sounds like your typical Vauxhall. The very reason I would never really have one.
Having said that, The PSA group (I.e. Peugeot) took Vauxhall over in 2017 and their cars have always had great seats in terms of comfort so hopefully Vauxhall has learnt something there.

@@neilburns8869 the seats in my 2017 corsa were great, but the seats in my 2020 and 2023 Peugeot-shape Corsas have been genuinely the most uncomfortable car seats I’ve ever experienced. The headrests cant forward over the top of the seats and force you into a hunchback position. I have to choose between driving like a grandma sitting forward with my face practically at the wheel to get away from the backrest, or driving like the hunchback of notre dame 😩

"People are buying Vauxhall Corsa, because they can buy Vauxhall Corsa"
This is such a great point. Whenever I hear that manufacturers are producing more SUVs because they sell, my blood boils. Of course we're buying SUVs, there's nothing else really left in the market! How are we supposed to actually buy different cars, if they become more and more obsolete? Luckily Stellantis gets it - Their offering is still just as varied as it should be.

With the brilliant Fiesta getting the chop in favour of other Ford models with a higher profit margin the other manufacturers will increase market share as you mention. The Polo is expensive for what you get but is allegedly a great car. For my money if I was in the market I would also look at the Seat Ibiza or the new Skoda Fabia. I had a previous model Fabia a while back for a few years and it was a brilliant car and an older generation Ibiza that was very good as well for its day. Obviously there is no guaranty that the new models will be better than the previous versions but these would be on my test drive list along with the Corsa and of course the current Polo. There are still a few superminis to check out. I must confess I do like the look of the current Corsa though.

@@robjavier8064 can't argue with you there. I used to have a Fiesta and it was great. There's one decisive argument really: It's affordable (under current circumstances). If you're in the (german) market for a relatively young used car (not older than 2019, not more than 25-30k miles) with some goodies (i.e. automatic climate control, LED headlights, heated seats 😅, cruise control, android auto/apple car play), it's mainly the Corsa and the Clio you'll see in the car searching websites (with the occasional oddball C3 or Mazda2 and some late Fabia 3) starting from 14k€ up until around 16.5-17k, when some Fiestas and Ibizas start appearing.
Considering the fact the Corsa is a modern car which is fuel efficient, can be specced up nicely and doesn't cost the world (basically a 208 with less design but at a 20-30% discount), and it's a no brainer.

Vauxhall Corsa & Opel Corsa are just Peugeot 208. French Peugeot bought Opel-Vauxhall in 2017 when Opel-Vauxhall was then a dying brand. Opel has been in deficit for the past 10 years. In 2018, Opel was profitable. Michael Lohscheller, Managing Director of Opel Automobile GmbH: " "When we compared the production costs per car at Opel and PSA, we realized that we were really bad: ours were sometimes twice as high." Frédéric Laganier, director of industrial strategy at PSA: "The organization has been completely revised with the creation of clusters which bring together factories by type of product.
In the GM era, Opel used ten engine families, compared to four now. Opel used nine different platforms (chassis and running gear), almost one per model. Today, there are only two, shared with the brands of Peugeot....
There were 26 different steering wheel finishes for the Insignia sedan. Opel now only offers nine. And, like at PSA, it has narrowed its range to focus on the most popular models."

I've never really understood why the Corsa in the UK is so much more successful than the Clio ( I have the E tech) which I think has a far better looking interior and a bit more "flare", even though the Corsa is now basically French as well, built with various Peugeot 'bits'. I think the Corsa may have a better ride quality which is important to me as I use this size of car for long journeys as well as short and don't really need a hulking great SUV for two people. I may well look at it next time and perhaps I won't need a 4 inch booster cushion to see the bonnet as I do now - are car seats getting lower to accommodate taller drivers?! Very nice review.

Been driving this corsa for over a year now, Love it, massive upgrade to my fiat punto evo, feels like a ferrari every day haha,
Tbh the infotainment screen doesn't matter whatever model you choose, I've got the top range corsa with the 10 inch and you can't even use the extra 3 inches, the screen still 7 inches plus the signs to choose certain things, Which is rather annoying,
my only real annoying thing is the electrics can be a bit funny, my AC and heater in general stops working randomly for a few days, Actually spent a year the start stop doesn't actually work, it's a gimmick and the reason for it is, it's the exact same model as the 208, all the parts are just the exact same however during shipping of the car battery to the vauxhaul plant, by law all batteries must be under 40% charged to ship, What vauxhaul doesn't actually do is charge them up again.
So to use the start stop function the battery needs to be around 90% charged for it to be of use, my battery is currently sitting on around 60% charge, it never goes up, apparently we are supppse to trickle charge it every year ive been told, originally I was told that you just need to take it for long drives, I drive in total at least an hour a day for work not including any other commitments, a few months ago I driven it for 4.5 hours and my battery still remained the same. This is a common issue with this model and as someone who is experiencing something which is absolutely stupid do take that into account.
Otherwise this car is almost perfect, it's smooth driving it and all the extras are worth it if you can afford it, I would recommend going for a decent model instead of the basic, also would have liked to see heated windscreen washers as that would be amazing during weather like right now.
I do love this car but when you look at it from the front it looks like its depressed cause its has a permanent sad face on the front of the car

These cars are great for a certain kind of person. The people who buy these don't care to know about the engine specs Nicola. They are non car people like qashqai owners. This twin is the perfect "I just need a new leased/pcp small car and a new leased/pcp family car" type driveway. It's popular because it's cheap and their finance deals are unrivalled, you give it back after 3 years after having very few issues in the first 3 years of its life. They kerb the wheels, parking door dents from shopping , kids rub jam and sweets into the rear seat fabric, then when they return it get told it's never been serviced so have to pay extra compensation because "I wasn't told to do so". I also like the takeaway driver reference in the comments but these are more corsa d's and a few c's still clinging on with their timing chains howling and car windows full of steam from the numerous cabin water leaks. These cars serve their purpose. Thumbs up from me. The specced well too anything above basic spec has 5 times the amount of the equivalent polo, and we all know that vw reliability has crumbled the past 15 years to dust.

A new grille and slightly different lights weren't enough to keep up the excitement. That, and the price being way too high for what it is. At least Vauxhall are trying to do something different, and thank goodness because that Corsa was looking very dated. I had the more powerful version of this engine in a Peugeot 308. It's a disaster of a powerplant with a cambelt that runs in the oil. The result is a belt that disintegrates into the oil and distributes itself around the engine and will ultimately destroy it if not caught in time. I got rid of mine after two blocked vvt solenoids which is a tell tale sign. You have been warned.

If you're the person who mentioned this on Honest John, your engine in a 2016 308, so I'm wondering if reliability has improved akin to what happened with the DV6?

I heard that they have dropped the wet belt design in engines after 2021

@@stephandolby There is no improve in reliability! Expect the current belt generation to last around 30.000-70.000km.

@@aircraftspottingDe1 I'd be a little miffed if I had to change a timing belt with every few services. My sister has a 2017 pre-facelift 308 which has been absolutely fine, so hopefully that'll remain the case, touch wood, and whilst I'm sure she looks after it, I don't actually know if she's needed to replace the belt since she bought the car four years ago.

@@stephandolby We got a 2017 Peugeot 208, belt crumbled after only 40.000 miles.
In Germany just now a recall started for Opel cars, but that's just the beginning! They'll have to recall million of cars. If you want to buy a new car, avoid this engine at any cost or wait till they switch to the timing chain.
If your sister's car runs fine, don't be fooled by it, it can be over every minute with an oil pressure warning. The changing intervall is 6 years so get the belt replaced very soon!
