i saw this last night with my bf and we loved it so much! I actually loved the family plot, the cheesy Christmas lines and heartfelt moments, and especiallyyyyy David Harbour! Along with Halloween, I’m a huge Christmas fan so I do enjoy tacky or cheesy Christmas movies and this felt like a great combination of that and gorey violence. It’ll probably end up being a Christmas yearly watch for me!
This was a great movie to see in the theater, I think. There was a good sized crowd when I went and everyone's reactions were amazing. A good crowd film.
This is a really good movie. It’s so much fun with lots of action. The perfect action Christmas movie with comedy but it also made me cry. I give it a 8.5/10. David Harbour does an incredible job, he’s such a good actor and he played a really good Santa. And since I love Home Alone, I also loved Violent Night. Home Alone 1 & 2 are my all time favourite Christmas movies, so I really enjoyed Violent Night
This movie is honestly getting better reviews than I was expecting. I was expecting like a 12% on rotten tomatoes (not to say that rotten tomatoes is an amazing source) and the movie to be made fun of for being so bad. I’m kinda excited now.
I think it's because director Tommy Wirkola have experience with campy horror-comedy. The Dead Snow films for example (especially the 2nd) are dang good in spite of being cheesy as hell.
Honestly same I just got out of the theater from watching it and its honestly better than I thought it was going to be it wasn't anything ground breaking but it is mindless fun if thats what you're looking for!
I live in Eureka springs where every summer we put on the Passion Play (yup Passion of the Christ live and in person in the shadow of the largest Jesus statue in the US) now THATS horrifying
You asked in a previous movie whether we think you’re getting harsher on the movies you watch - after watching this movie, listening to your review, and then hearing your rating…I think yes you are. I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing, but I get the overall impression from your vids lately that your taste has maybe changed a bit. That you’re less likely to be forgiving of a movie’s shortcomings in the name of entertainment. This isn’t me criticizing that or anything, you are 100% allowed to have this opinion and I feel like a lot of movie critics/cinephiles sort of develop this as their catalog grows. Our taste’s change. But you asked a bit back and I wasn’t sure at the time…but definitely see it now ❤❤❤
as a woman unapologetically obsessed with David Harbour, I knew I immediately had to see this (and I did - December 1) and while I feel I'm very biased, I LOVED it! I do agree some of the scenes felt a little long/plot a little too obvious but overall I enjoyed it. definitely a holiday rewatch for me
same niche for me as Krampus! Instant Christmas classic for me! I'll have to watch every year. MY ONLY ONLY gripe would be I did feel like the movie could've been 20 min shorter
Maybe it would be fun to see a video on how you want to introduce your daughter to the horror genre. If you hope to watch Goosebumps or some other children's horror show.
It probably doesn’t require a whole video review but I would love to hear your opinion on Bones & All if you end up seeing it! I can’t decide how I feel but I’m also very squeamish so 😅
I saw this last night and had fun. I'm not sure if I'd rewatch it every year like I do Krampus or other christmas classics, but I'd probably watch it again.
I would be interested in hearing your overall thoughts on the three Black Christmas movies, especially since the 06 one is classic 2000's horror (an underrated IMO)
One of the things I like about this movie is that it doesn't take the easy route of being cynical and ironic, like it thinks itself above being a Christmas movie. I also really loved the John Williams-esque soundtrack because it instantly made me nostalgic for the Christmas movies from the 90s that I watched as a kid.
The only Easter themed “horror” situation (can’t say it’s the whole film, it’s just a segment in the anthology) is from the movie Holidays, and that “bunny” gave me nightmares 😞
Of course I mean this with the utmost love and respect but I do think you were a little harsh here! I personally thought the concept was very original, and the jokes were meant to be stupid and goofy I think. It definitely delivered on the dark comedy description, and the gore was a good level for me! It didn't feel torture-p0rny or over the top, just genuinely gross. I also think this is a great film to see in theatres because it's just SO fun and is an overall good time. My boyfriend and I loved it! Definitely agree the run time was a bit long but overall this was a 4.5/5 for me 🖤
i liked the movie quite a lot, but i also thought it was a horror movie when I saw the trailer and then the movie was different than what I was expecting.
I have to disagree, *hard*, with you criticisms of the film: - The film is around 1:40 hr, so if 30 min were cut for form it, then it would be a DTV release rather than a theatrical one. However, I say that probably 10 to 15 min could've been cut. - I don't know what kind of screen your theatre has, but I had no problem following the fight scene in the shed. The moonlight is plentiful enough to illuminate the action, but not too bright, as ol' Nick is meant to be a creature out of a nightmare from the meatbags' collective POV. - This is a blunt AF film, so "subtle humour" would've just been inappropriate. - Given the life Nick had lived before (or maybe even during some periods of) donning his present mantle, the physical opposition he faces throughout the film ultimately aren't that difficult. - If you want the heartwarming moments removed or toned down from the film, then the girl protagonist should've lost at least a finger or two due to mutilation or torture. I saw this last night with a theatre that was ~¾ full. The film will definitely become an Xmas classic for me and the point is the experience was amazing! The crowd literally LOLd throughout the film. And David Harbour delivers an amazing performance. The backstory for ol' Nick is unique and plausible(!). I hope it will be explored more and Mrs. Claus will be introduced if a sequel is greenlit. 🎅🪓
i only watched this movie because i love david harbour but it was surprisingly really fun!! it had me laughing really hard at some parts i felt goofy because only me and the kid behind me were laughing 😭 i think the movie was self aware and this is def going on my rewatch list for the holidays
I thought the same about the length but really enjoyed it. Even the dumb humour I laughed at that Christmas dies tonight line. Congratulations on the pregnancy.
It's not really a spoiler but one of the scenes I found the funniest was when the "Mr. Scrooge" said, "Christmas dies tonight." like not sure if that was intentional and a little laugh at Halloween but nonetheless, it had my friends and I cracking tf up in the theater. I highly would suggest it to anyone, a fan of Christmas (and action) movies and of course a fan of David, too! :)
The story about the bunny suit sounds like a throwaway line from a sitcom. A: you're making a Christmas movie? B: well. I wanted to do an Easter flick. But our leading man refused to get fitted for his fluffy bunny costume.
@@robk.6591 i think him and peter dinklage would be great in a mvie about leprechauns like david could be one who was made supersize by like a curse or something and dinklage is jealous of him for the whole movie that be so funny(if executed properly of course)
I don’t believe that at all that this was meant to be an Easter movie because this is such an homage to Die Hard and Home Alone which are Christmas movies so I call bull shit lol
I enjoyed the film too but just like you I would’ve been happy if they was more gore and less sappy Christmas moments. It’s definitely a movie I don’t plan to see again anytime soon tbh. I gave it a 3.5/5 mainly for its entertainment and David Harbour’s performance
I had a fun time with this one, but I think if it was anyone else as Santa I would not have liked it. Completely agree that David Harbour was the chef’s kiss choice for casting. The humor def didn’t do it for me. It’s like, you know THEY know it’s cheesy, but it still didn’t quite hit that sweet spot where the cheesiness is funny and adds to the movie.
This video deserves a bonus only if you help me with something. In an email to my teacher, I called myself a dumb dumb who's too scared to do some disgusting homework and she literally brought up the topic 'horror movie.' Do you assume she knows the origins about a phrase? I wasn't even trying to test her. It's because I think it's funny to use it.
After watching it last night, I would give it a 2.5 also. Something about the movie seem to be missing. It's entertaining but catch it on streaming or matinee if want to go to the theater.
My teenager and I went to see it this past Friday night. I agree with it kind of dragging and maybe cutting off 30 minutes. I was not expecting Santa to be so hesitant fighting the bad guys. The badassery didn't come out of him until like the shed scene. There were so many puns that it was very cheesy. I also thought the kills were great but just needed a bit more OOMPH. But it's not labeled as 'horror' so I guess we got we got. My teen loves it. I liked it just fine. I was entertained and I loved David Harbour in it. It was a good movie if you're in that mood for that. I think for ppl that have watched extreme gore like I have it just didn't quite hit that mark I guess but definitely fun. I'll prob buy it on DVD or Blu-ray when it comes out because of David Harbour and my teen and I did enjoy it together.
I absolutely loved this movie it was great and the best part was it was the very first rated R movie I’ve ever seen in theaters(I’m 13 and autistic btw) and the experience was even better cause I had my partner watching with me(my parents took us to see the movie) me, my dad, and my partner couldn’t stop laughing at the scene where Santa throws up on the lady 😂 for me it’s a 8/10 and I can’t wait to watch it next year of Christmas along with Black Christmas(1974), Silent Night Deadly Night(1984), Better Watch Out(2016), Elf(2003), The Grinch(2000), Home Alone(1990), Krampus(2015), The Christmas Chronicles(2018), The Polar Express(2004), Die Hard(1988), Gremlins(1984), and The Nightmare Before Christmas(1993) if that counts 😅
I feel like we completely disagree. The home alone sequence was my least favourite. And I don’t think the intro was that great. I didn’t really care about any of the story, just Santa John wicking mercenaries
Sarah, you mention this movie is bloody, but not gory. Can you, or a reader of this comment, please tell me the difference between blood and gore? Thank you.
I think it really depends on what people can stomach in. When I think of gore, I think about martyrs, the saw franchise, hellraiser, hostel, or even the fly (1986). When I think about blood, I think about Scream, nightmare on elm street, Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1, and even Logan (the x men movie). It really depends on how people can stomach the content. Isn’t this Action-Comedy? Not Horror-Comedy. Especially since it’s being compared to Die Hard. I feel most will call it horror just because it’s another ‘Killer Santa’ type film

He looks like he carries the movie and that's not a bad thing.

You can't go wrong having David Harbour star in a movie, unless...the studio wants to make a profit.
Christmas dies tonight!
Plot twist: And Santa mentors one of his elves to be a copycat Santa.
The elf's name is Cory.
Will Santa get fed into a grinder?
If you want an Easter horror, The Passion of The Christ might count.
