Clawhammer picking, by contrast, is primarily a down-picking style. The hand assumes a claw-like shape and the strumming finger is kept fairly stiff, striking the strings by the motion of the hand at the wrist and/or elbow, rather than a flicking motion by the finger. In its most common form on the banjo, only the thumb and middle or index finger are used and the finger always downpicks, hitting the string with the back of the fingernail. By contrast, the thumb rests on the fifth string with the downpick motion, and is often released in a lighter up-pick to create the distinctive clawhammer sound. In this song he emulates the double bass drum gallop sound; giving it the drive.

About the bassist: I think it's actually a form of "slap bass," where you dont use a pick, but rather the thumb and palm of the hand to "slap" the string as you play it. That gallop sound on the drums? Thank you Iron Maiden! 🤘🔥🤘 And about the drummer's foot technique: I've heard it called "heel-and-toe," as it is the only way to play fast, but also to conserve energy, so you dont get tired out halfway through the song. And that reaction, hearing Brittney? _Priceless._ Just like almost every other reactor I've ever seen react to Brittney. And dont worry, bud, you're not the first to have that reaction -- I merely see it as an appreciation of very exceptional talent.
I believe if memory serves from a previous reaction I saw to this song the reactor pointed out that the bassist is using a claw hammer style. Apparently it is something often used when playing the banjo as it allows you to play faster. In this case he's using it to keep up with the pace of the song and almost act as a hybrid lead guitar/bass player. Also side note Fantastic breakdown.
Your reaction to the bassist is as if he's an alien playing with some sort of non-human appendage, and Nikko's just like "yeah man it's easy you just use your gflugenflarther"
I think my favorite part of this reaction is the eye twitch at 8:56. It’s when he’s geeking out over the solo and then sees that a second solo is going on in the background.
How about going from singer with a great lungs to one that is missing 25% of his? (Removed due Tuberculosis contracted during military service). Wintersun - Sons of winter and stars (or Time) Live @Sonic pump studios Wintersuns drummer is current NIgthwish drummer. Jukka that you have seen during Wacken videos retired due health reasons from drumming and concentrates to Nightwishes business side of things
@Chase Carneson As a musician I liked the breakdown of the package as a whole. Subbed for sure. Long time fan of them. 2 SUGGESTIONS - 1) As a guitarist, if you want to look at how they put some of their songs together, Andrew Kingsley is "lead" guitar in the band and does some song playthroughs with full tab on his YT channel. Obviously both guitars can play lead incredibly. 2) to check out the singer specifically - two videos: 1st is her doing a karaoke of Queensryche AFTER playing a full 2 hour show in a pub in Edinburgh. Filmed on a cellphone and still sounds amazing. 2nd is her doing an opera piece (Brindisi) with another metal singer from the band Kings of the Trident. Impeccable.
his bass techique appears to be an alternate way to get triplet sounds on a bass, thumb 1 , index 2, middle 3 like tripletting in flamenco style guitar
8:30 It looks like he's using middle finger and ring finger to play. Maybe even index finger at times so he might actually be playing with total of 4 fingers.
Canadian band I'm so proud. Excellent analysis, there are only a handful of channels that are on your level of technical prowess. Thanks, I subscribed.
Other comments have mentioned tonight we ride and northwest passage as performed by unleash the archers. So I wanted to say thank you for your excellent reaction and encourage you to do more of this band!
Thank you for putting into words why I like this band so much. I don't know all the techniques and music theory they use, but I always knew they were special. Now it makes sense. ha
That gallop that both the drummer and bassist are doing is indicative of power metal, add clean vocals about dungeons and dragons and clean guitar solos and you have everything
Man, I've played guitar and bass about 30 years, I consider myself pretty proficient with em both, but the level of mastery to be able to sync so perfectly with the each other is mind blowing.. Being able to play is one thing, being able to mesh all these pieces together into one cohesive unit is totally different, this is pure mastery, by a group of musical prodigies.
To explain the bassist plucking technique (which I find really cool as well). What I see him do is this: You know how some bassists use their index-, middle- and ring-fingers to be able to play faster as using 3 fingers is less taxing on each single one as only using 2? The usual pattern is a "roll" of ring-middle-index-ring-middle-index. Only problem is that it creates a 3-"beat" pattern where often you need 4 "beats" which means "1" moves from one finger to the next each time. Now what this guy does is add the thumb as a 4th finger and it seems he goes: thumb-ring-middle-index to create a smooth pattern of 4 strokes on each pass. It's quite smart actually, especially since he often plays those really fast 16th-note patterns which is probably much less taxing on the fingers once you get this down well (which needs a lot of work).
Oh yay! So excited you did this one. You're quickly become one of my favorite reactors, I really enjoy your commentary! This is a concept album and honestly the entire thing is fantastic. You could react to any of them but Cleanse the Bloodlines has a music video so I'd recommend that one. If you're into fantasy you'd enjoy the story the album tells - I believe the singer, Brittney Slayes, writes the lyrics. The bassist is no longer in the band but even the new one was like whoa yeah it was difficult learning the songs because the bassist was a classically trained guy and wrote his parts in interesting ways.
Thank you for the kind words and support. Promise there are loads more reactions coming so stay posted! I believe that about the bassist. Guy is something else.
absolutely love these reactions. I think your channel is the first one where I'm not rolling my eyes at the pauses and just skipping to the rest of the track. In the same way that Mel Gibson knew what women were thinking in that 1990s movie, you're kinda nailing what musicians are thinking when they hear this, except somehow you're noticing it all in one take vs the rest of us over a week span
It has to be said ... you are doing a great job! one of the best reacter with knowledge and well-founded statements! AWAKENING the ultimate power song! On every instrument musicians who have arrived in the premier class ... for Brittney Slayes there are no words that do her justice ...her masterpiece -Tonight We Ride - abnormally good

The bass player does have incredible technique but let us not forget the incredible foot technique of that drummer. Double stroke consistent 16th rolls at that tempo and that clean & with that endurance is pretty epic. You catch a good glimpse of it at the 6:28 mark

I will never get sick of seeing reactions to this song. Love it. Along with “Blind and Frozen” by Beast in Black, it’s my favourite song that I’ve discovered via TH-cam.
I'm still catching up on some of your older vids but you're the first reactor that I've seen that actually picked up on the bass player's super weird but awesome fingering style and there are a lot of reaction to this. I think it comes from his predominantly jazz background. Unfortunately, he left the band before this really hit big. They have been using touring bassists and even used a session bass player to record the new album. Glad to see you've gotten into them and yeah, they were on tour with Dragonforce, who was the headliner. The tour was cut short due to COVID but I was lucky enough to catch it the week before the tour was cancelled. They certainly gave DF a run for their money and that band is no slouch themselves.
Oh my gosh, loved this! first time hearing Unleash the Archers. After the reaction video, which as always was awesome, I went ahead and played it for my neighbors also. :)
Tonight We Ride from Unleash the Archers is one of their older songs but still a ton of fun. Their most recent song, Northwest Passage is a brilliant cover. Those are my recommendations if you’re just getting into this band.
Other commenter may have covered it, but i've seen other reaction videos describe the bass player using a 'claw hammer' technique, similar to how one plays a banjo.
BLOODY HELL! This is incredible! I'm sure this is my first time hearing UTA and it's incredible! Having multiple personalities can introduce some interesting perspectives. Jamie was the one that found your channel a few months ago and has been watching and commenting. Watching this up to about 2 minutes in, I've had tingles the whole time! There's some part of our brain that vaguely remembers having heard the song before, but I don't really have access to those memories. I get a vague feeling before a new part of the song as to what's coming, but I don't remember it so it feels like the first time for me! I am such a huge fan of this band already! A masterclass indeed. Those early points about the bass and guitarist are very good to know. I didn't see the bass head missing until you mentioned it. Good spot. AND HER VOCALS! HOLY CRAP! Stamina. Power. Control. Intensity. ooooOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHH!!! It's not even language. It's just vocalisation, just vowel sounds. But she makes me feel like I could kick a rhino in the nuts while playing air guitar in front of an explosion. This is so metal right now. Wow. Every member stands out as you said. And you don't just hear it, you get to see it too. That bassist is so impressive just plucking away in a galloping rhythm, and the drummer pounding with his feet makes me feel tired already. Those guitarists as well are astounding. They make it look so easy, which just truly demonstrates how actually incredible they really are. Oh, your right! I was trying to figure out how the vocals stood out so crystal clear without pushing the instruments back, and it's because they're floating on top like a wave. Exactly right. I'm sorry. Did the drummer's shirt say "I'm a Bundy Junkie"? You asked what technique the drummer was using. It looks like some kind of plucking, but also I recall reading something about a hammer technique? "This is exhausting." Yep. I've still got chills going and I think I need a cup of tea after this is done. That guy's screams are impressively clear despite being so low. The chugging was a great explanation. We might try that soon. The bassist having his moment can't help but make me smile. And back into the prechorus. As you said several times, masterclass. They look like they would be a ton of fun to be around, just a great group of friends. I feel like this is what you get when a bunch of level 20 bards form an adventuring party in DnD. Excuse me, I need to go climb a mountain and change the world now. Nothing can stop me, not even more Chase videos. - Ian
You might dig Sabaton. They're a Swedish power metal band with an almost exclusive focus on military history, battles and people. Oh and their drummer is married to Floor from Nightwish XD Ghost Division live at Woodstock or the video for Bismarck are good places to start
I love how, because of your obvious enjoyment of deeply technical masterpieces and your indepth analysis, you keep getting more of it recommended to you. Your channel is starting to collect the absolute masters of our time like this :D I can't wait which bands I get to discover with you that I don't know yet.
Great video! I saw them live back in August of 2018, then both sets on 70,000 Tons and they are as good live as this video shows. They're also super-friendly, awesome, down to earth people. I have to recommend the following: Apex - The song you just did a video for was the opening track on the Apex album, and Apex is the closing track, and they fit those roles so perfectly. I feel emotionally drained at the end of the song every time I hear Apex because of the height it takes you to. Northwest Passage - This is actually their cover version of a Canadian shanty-style folk song, and it's absolutely amazing. The video is incredibly well done and such a mind-trip they actually posted an explanation video, which would be also good for you to hear as you get an idea of their personalities. Test Your Metal - Old school, kick you in the face, heavy metal. GLORIOUS song that gets the blood pumping. Queen of the Reich (Live version from a pub in Glasgow) - It's literally just Brittney Slayes in all her glory doing a karaoke cover of Queen of the Reich (Queensryche) at a pub in Scotland AFTER they had already finished a show.
Your face when that intro riff first starts was literally the same reaction I had when I first heard this song. One of the best metal songs in recent years.
Oh please do Ne Obliviscaris! "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope live in Colorado" is the default starter and a masterpiece of a composition and flow, but many of their best songs do not have videos, Eyrie and As Icicles Fall for example.
it's very simple..... we see here 5 musicians who all 5 master their profession perfectly. the perfection with which each individual acts makes an all-round perfect package. the camera work shows how deeply relaxed these 5 go to work. this testifies to unique skills. in addition, a bass guitarist who works in a banjo style his instrument. what can i say one of the best songs I know.
Thanks so much for this review. I have no idea from anything in music and I really like to hear what someone has to say about songs I like who knows what he says!
Not only are they talented, but they're some of the greatest/nicest people and appreciate their fans. Brittney would probably do an interview with you if you asked her to.

Somebody run and tell Nicko he got a shout out....I'm sure he will love it.....
That bass technique is born out of classical guitar technique.
reminds me of banjo picking
"Would I listen to this all the time? No, because it would be exhausting!"
Loved that!! 😄😁
😂😂😂👌
I think my favorite part of this reaction is the eye twitch at 8:56. It’s when he’s geeking out over the solo and then sees that a second solo is going on in the background.
Precisely the kind of response I want and they deserve when I show someone U.T.A. !! Please see also: General of the Dark Army
Already done my friend. Give it a search
@@ChaseCarneson omw!!
Unleash the Archers!!! Great choice, man! They are excellent. Thanks for the great reaction!
How about going from singer with a great lungs to one that is missing 25% of his? (Removed due Tuberculosis contracted during military service).
Wintersun - Sons of winter and stars (or Time) Live @Sonic pump studios
Wintersuns drummer is current NIgthwish drummer. Jukka that you have seen during Wacken videos retired due health reasons from drumming and concentrates to Nightwishes business side of things
Had the pleasure of seeing them live a year or two ago. Brittany is so fucking tiny, and her voice is the most powerful thing imaginable. It's insane.
@Chase Carneson As a musician I liked the breakdown of the package as a whole. Subbed for sure. Long time fan of them. 2 SUGGESTIONS -
1) As a guitarist, if you want to look at how they put some of their songs together, Andrew Kingsley is "lead" guitar in the band and does some song playthroughs with full tab on his YT channel.
Impeccable.
Thanks man. Really appreciate that a bunch.
his bass techique appears to be an alternate way to get triplet sounds on a bass, thumb 1 , index 2, middle 3 like tripletting in flamenco style guitar
8:30 It looks like he's using middle finger and ring finger to play. Maybe even index finger at times so he might actually be playing with total of 4 fingers.
reminds me of banjo picking
Canadian band I'm so proud. Excellent analysis, there are only a handful of channels that are on your level of technical prowess. Thanks, I subscribed.
Very kind of you. Much appreciated.
Now it makes sense. ha
They are very special indeed. Thanks for supporting.
Really nice thing to see finally metal musicians beeing recognized for their techinique and composition capabilities.
I felt the same way, the way they synced the guitars is incredible
Apex!!!! One of the other amazing songs off the album.
To explain the bassist plucking technique (which I find really cool as well). What I see him do is this:
You know how some bassists use their index-, middle- and ring-fingers to be able to play faster as using 3 fingers is less taxing on each single one as only using 2?
Reactions like this are why I love reaction videos
The true appreciation for what the listener has discovered
The bassist's technique almost reminds me of classical guitar.
absolutely love these reactions.
On every instrument musicians who have arrived in the premier class ... for Brittney Slayes there are no words that do her justice ...her masterpiece -Tonight We Ride - abnormally good
That's really kind of you to say. Genuinely appreciate it and grateful for the support.
The bass player's picking reminds me of a tweaked claw-hammer banjo picking style. Pretty cool.
The solo part at 9:57 has such a Dream Theater sound to it. They can’t not be inspired by them. So great.
When you mention people opening for others I immediately thought about what would happen if they did a colab with Nightwish. My heart might just explode if that actually were to happen.
i have been a fan of UTA since their first cd launch in Victoria B.C love watching people become fans
The bass player does have incredible technique but let us not forget the incredible foot technique of that drummer. Double stroke consistent 16th rolls at that tempo and that clean & with that endurance is pretty epic. You catch a good glimpse of it at the 6:28 mark
Love your analysis n explanation to us...I'm not a musician bout fo appreciate the sound...you break down why I appreciate the sound...your expressions say it all...love your content n style bro..you are good...thank you
Nice on, Paul. Appreciate that! Thanks for the support. Lots more coming soon.
@@ChaseCarneson thanks chase...my son is named chance...did you go through smart ass remarks as my son did...nothing vicious...only not funny any more dude type comments...nice you wrote back to a non patron fan who enjoys your excitement n takes...thanks ..before you get to big n forget us unpatroned fans...try for your self within temptation...faster, a demons fate, mad world, frozen....ps very little accent you have...New Zealand / Australia???? Nice to know you I'm from utah via colorado....go broncos!
What a wonderful reaction to one of my favorite bands. Thanks bunches. Subbed for sure!
I appreciate you.
I am constantly amazed by how you are always able to notice so many details in a song on the first listen. I don't normally subscribe to reactors because they usually do a few songs I like then move on to something else i'm not interested in, but I truly appreciate the things you talk about and what you bring out of a song, so I subscribed
I will never get sick of seeing reactions to this song. Love it. Along with “Blind and Frozen” by Beast in Black, it’s my favourite song that I’ve discovered via TH-cam.
Apex is a concept album, with each song being a chapter in the story. Awakening is the first chapter; they're all great. Yay, Canadian Power Metal!
🇨🇦💪
4:26 that's the best reaction to the scream so far 😂
Circling back nearly a year later because I've figured out the bass player's technique. It's like the "claw hammer" technique used in banjo playing.
I like your break down. I’d suggest other stuff but you’ve clearly already got the recommendations.
Nice one, David. Appreciate that!
They certainly gave DF a run for their money and that band is no slouch themselves.
i love your channel you're so detailed yet very professional!
Oh my gosh, loved this! first time hearing Unleash the Archers. After the reaction video, which as always was awesome, I went ahead and played it for my neighbors also. :)
Listen to to offer we ride.its fantastic
@@ChaseCarneson Well Officer, Chase said listen to it.....:) Yep, buying, downloading, watching. Thanks again dude.
Tonight We Ride from Unleash the Archers is one of their older songs but still a ton of fun. Their most recent song, Northwest Passage is a brilliant cover. Those are my recommendations if you’re just getting into this band.
Best reactor on youtube. I Learn every time. Great stuff Chase!
- Ian
Love your forensic comments about how the song is constructed
You might dig Sabaton. They're a Swedish power metal band with an almost exclusive focus on military history, battles and people. Oh and their drummer is married to Floor from Nightwish XD
Ghost Division live at Woodstock or the video for Bismarck are good places to start
"Some things you HAVE to hear twice" twice? I can almost listen to their entire current discography nonstop for a week....
I love how, because of your obvious enjoyment of deeply technical masterpieces and your indepth analysis, you keep getting more of it recommended to you. Your channel is starting to collect the absolute masters of our time like this :D I can't wait which bands I get to discover with you that I don't know yet.
Thank you for the support. Grateful.
i love the video editing for this song
The gallop support the lyrics/story as well. Apex is a concept album, where the main character Immortal rides out to fulfill his mission.
Don't be sorry to pause, we're here to see your reaction! Pausing is part of it and it's great to see your knowledge of music!
Great video! I saw them live back in August of 2018, then both sets on 70,000 Tons and they are as good live as this video shows. They're also super-friendly, awesome, down to earth people.
I have to recommend the following:
Apex - The song you just did a video for was the opening track on the Apex album, and Apex is the closing track, and they fit those roles so perfectly.
"Test Your Metal" is a really great older song of theirs. More of an 80's metal sound.
Your face when that intro riff first starts was literally the same reaction I had when I first heard this song. One of the best metal songs in recent years.
Nightwish, Yours is an empty hope, live in Wembley!! Epica, Sancta Terra live with Floor Jansen!!!
Oh please do Ne Obliviscaris! "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope live in Colorado" is the default starter and a masterpiece of a composition and flow, but many of their best songs do not have videos, Eyrie and As Icicles Fall for example.
I saw them in Phoenix in 2018 and they opened their set with this. It's just as good live.
I love your technical breakdown.
it's very simple..... we see here 5 musicians who all 5 master their profession perfectly. the perfection with which each individual acts makes an all-round perfect package. the camera work shows how deeply relaxed these 5 go to work. this testifies to unique skills. in addition, a bass guitarist who works in a banjo style his instrument. what can i say one of the best songs I know.
Thanks so much for this review. I have no idea from anything in music and I really like to hear what someone has to say about songs I like who knows what he says!
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
Please do more of their songs. they are all fantastic. Her singing is unbelievable.
You really know musicianship, man! It's really impressing, how you recognize every last bist of a track.
Not only are they talented, but they're some of the greatest/nicest people and appreciate their fans. Brittney would probably do an interview with you if you asked her to.
i always get some insight from watching your videos that i dont get from alot of the other reactions. props always enjoy seeing your vids
"She's special. Sha has ti be to sing with this band"
