Kandy is the word that the British shortened for Kanda Uda Rata, which translated, means the City atop Mountains- the administrative capital of the then Ceylon, from where the king ruled at the time. It was too much of a mouthful for the British, so it became Kandy.

'Bele' is a very populer fruit in Sri Lanka ..
Aegle marmelos, also known as Bael or Indian gooseberry, is a tree native to the Indian subcontinent. It is highly valued for its medicinal properties and nutritional benefits. The fruit of the tree is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, and it is used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to treat various ailments such as indigestion, fever, and skin disorders. The tree's wood is also used for making furniture and musical instruments.

A slight correction from a humble biologist; Indian Gooseberry (which is actually Phyllanthus emblica) is a completely different plant to Bael. Fun fact; we often consider them to be sacred in the Buddist/Hindu communities. Oh and, the tea made from Bael is delicious. A must try.

    • @minervarose7664
      @minervarose7664 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@FrugalTravellers by "private" vs "government" bus what is meant in SL is the actual ownership of the buses, ie. the vehicles themselves! So the government-owned Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) owns and operates a fleet of buses (usually the older red buses like seen in 12:07) but since that isn't enough to meet the national demand, private companies are also allowed to operate their own buses. The ticket revenue from government buses goes to the government while that of private operators obviously goes to them. But the routes and ticket prices themselves are regulated and remain the same, regardless of whether you travel in a government or private-owned bus!
There are however, different "classes" of buses which have different ticket prices for the different classes (nothing to do with government vs private buses). You get the basic buses (cheapest ticket price) where there is no AC and they will pack in people like sardines 😅 then you have the "semi-luxury" buses, supposedly with fancier seats and i don't know what else, but i feel it's pointless paying extra for that because they don't have AC either and you may need to travel standing! So like what's the point 😂
But the "luxury" class (commonly known as inter-city buses) are really worth it for longer distance travel. If you are expecting some super luxury travel you maybe disappointed. But they do have AC and you are guaranteed a seat, so i feel it's fully worth paying the extra price because the ride is pretty comfy!

The Bael fruit is called Stone fruit. You can make juice from it like wood apple.Make sure to remove the seeds from it. If not it will taste bit bitter. Thank you for visiting Sri Lanka

    Hi M&L,
So Mandy likes Candy in Kandy? 🤪
Them fruits looks so sweet unlike anything we get in Northern Europe.
Looks like the wood apple juice didn't taste that good, I've never of it before so I'd love to try.
Them buses are quite special. We're they handrails / grab bars on the outside? (windows)
    What's the use of them?
Hope you guys are doing OK, chat later 🙋🏻‍♂️

Hahhha... I like it, SERGIO. Why didn't I think of that for the title? 🤗👏 Fruit in Sri Lanka looks so interesting, and is just so tasty!
Yes, I wasn't too enamoured of the wood apple smoothie, but Lee liked it. I think I expected it to taste more like chocolate, so was a bit disappointed 🤣🤣
That's a great question about the buses, and it isn't something we'd noticed! Hopefully someone will be able to let us both know 🙏🤗
Thank you so much for your lovely comment, SERGIO. We so appreciate your support and your insights 🙏🤗 ~ Mandy
