JAPANESE METAL BAT vs. AMERICAN METAL BAT | Mizuno VKong02 vs. Mizuno BBCOR

  • Japan actually has a different metal bat performance standard than the USA. In American high school baseball (NFHS), we have the "BBCOR" standard, but we finally got our hands on a Mizuno high school bat from Japan to see which version is hotter!
    Our BBCOR/USSSA bat rankings and Baseball Bat Bros merch can be found at baseballbatbro...

    We actually just found out that the "bat dampening" we referred to at 0:29 isn't happening until 2024! The Japan High School Baseball Federation is fully making the switch to BBCOR starting next year.
    We also learned that the MINIMUM weight for a Japanese high school bat is 900 grams - which equals out to 31.7 ounces!!! So these are essentially heavy BESR bats 😂

      Will, if you ever get back to swinging softball bats, Mizuno made an ENVY(ASA), the WRATH(120 U-trip and 98 ASA) in standard(12") and extended(14") barrels. Those were some of the HOTTEST bats at the time and slept on big time. Although fragile, I went through 15 or 20, the bombs....oh my. The next and final bats I swung were the Rusty Baumgartner Frenzy line. If you ever have the time or interest....

    I have lived in Japan for 15 years. I never stop being amazed at the craftsmanship excellence and manufacturing prowess of this country. Their gift as a people is to absorb an idea/technology and perfect the details with their own innovations and attention to detail. If anyone needs a car in the next few years, choose a Japanese one. My mom's 2001 Toyota Echo drives like the day she bought it.

    Most importantly, I want to thank Bat Bros for giving MIZUNO some love. I'm super stoked that it was enjoyed. This really makes me want to train and hit the field again.

    • @peterf.5261
      @peterf.5261 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. Not sure why Mizuno doesn't get much love here. I have the black Hot Metal 33/30 and I love that bat. I only hit in the cage, but it feels great and hits hard. All of my sons equipment is Mizuno (catchers equipment and all gloves). I didn't set out to only get Mizuno stuff, but it just seemed to be the best bang for the buck and is great.

      @@peterf.5261 I think I was 12 when I got my first Rawlings Gold Glove 11.5, and I was playing 3rd base with it. Next season was 13yo and the big boy fields. 3 or 4 games in I was having a hard time feeling the ball when I would cut across and rob the short stop. I bobbled or missed the ball when trying to make the play. It was by accident that I was in Houston, very rare at the time(1994), and we stopped at some outdoors/sporting goods store going out of business. I picked up two things, a 34/30 LS TPL(light blue with red accents) and a 12" black Mizuno. I spent all my paper route money....like $600, but it was worth it!
      We went all the way to Shreveport, LA that year and I don't remember a fielding error, some throwing for sure, till I was a junior in high school. Moved across the diamond for short time, when I wasn't on the hill, so a Mizuno was the clear choice for me. My first glance then and still now is Mizu! Hell my Rottweiler I was given by a girlfriend liked Mizuno a ton too! She ate my 12"! Must've been the gel padding it had for the index finger and 3 knuckles of the palm. Still haven't found a glove like that. I later found out it was some exotic leather and a pro model. The good ole days

    I'm loving the recent interest in Japanese baseball. The regulation they use is primarily based on compression. Back in the 80s, they came out with a 3 prong test but they've made it more strict in 2020. A 40 year regulation is honestly very impressive considering most regulations last 10 to 20 years before needing updates. Another thing to note is that the regulation update takes a few years to enact so it shouldn't go in until next year or the year after
    Regulating compression is imo the most consistent way to regulate bats and one of the reasons why it's used in slowpitch

If you guys ever get the chance to look at this era of Japanese metal bats again, check out the bats from Asics like the Asics Goldstage, Asics Lightezza, and the Asics Speedaxel (the bat that Rintaro Sasaki dominated with) as well as bats from the likes of SSK with their SkyBeat 31k and Zett's Zettpower 2nd, BigBangShot, Neostatus, and Prostatus bats. Those bats are highly rated alongside the likes of the VKong02 and Mizuno's offerings in Japan.

Or, for some real fun, try the junior high school vkong that my son uses. It’s 84 cm and 830 grams which calculates to like a drop -3.7. Lighter than the high school bat and I think would produce higher exit speeds??

    No wonder so many Japanese players have flat, contact swings. Between the hotter high school bats and the shorter fences they seriously don’t have a reason to maximize their power, just need to catch barrel with minimal effort and they can hit bombs. Cool how stuff like this leads to totally different approaches and styles towards the same game
