I gotta admit the idea of being able to seperate the character roleplaying from their abilities in combat sounds pretty great. The character isn't just defined by what they can do in combat
This is one of the best parts for sure! I have played in LANCER and recently ran a year long ICON campaign, which is Tom's (the author) other game. It's a mythic fantasy game inspired by Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Shadow of the Colossus, etc. You have a completely separate class for your narrative (called a bond) and a class for your combat (called class+job). My players and I really loved this, as there's no reason you can't be good at both narrative and combat! 5e tends to balance both together, so it's hard to be great at both. But if you think about it... There's no reason you can't be good at both. If everyone can do it, then why not? It just makes everyone have more fun! This is a design philosophy that applies to the rest of the game too; in both systems, you will have multiple abilities that are extremely strong, often with no limits on use. 5e would have you believe that's broken, but no! Everyone has it, so it's balanced, but more importantly, no ability is always good. Take 5e action surge for example; surging would always be a good idea if you had unlimited uses. In LANCER and ICON, abilities will have a cost, not always be useful, etc. By having that be your decision-driver instead of having limited resources, combat becomes much more interesting!
MHHMMM, if you are interested in more of these style of games I suggest looking into blades in the dark, and beam saber!

My forever gm asked for someone to host a lancer game for him instead, and now I am going lancer, and ttrpgs, for the first time ever.

I was playing Battletech before I played D&D, and Lancer feels inspired by both without actually copying anything from either.
Systemically, it looks like a great middle ground between the two.

@@thatturtlegm It's the tabletop game that the Mechwarrior series of videogames was based on. It's been around since the 80s and the basic rules have been pretty much unchanged, but with new books adding rules for niche situations.
Think about that. Nearly 40 years of new books... Adding rules...
Also, nearly 40 real-world years of lore development. The setting is vast.
Well it unfortunately still copied the clunkiness of 5e roll to hit AC grid based combat, where nothing interesting happening can be a usual outcome

I like the enthusiasm and perspective, but 80% of this video was just:
“you can roleplay in the roleplay game”
“you can make stuff up as a GM”
“You should learn the system if you want to GM”
Like you clearly care and are trying to be informative, but you kill the attention span of the viewer with useless word vomit at the beginning.
Makes plenty of sense! (comments like this one are super helpful, I appreciate you not being a dick about it either some folks don't do that ha-ha) Alot of people underestimate the potential of a game like lancer with how "open" it really is at its core. Plenty of people come by with new ideas, so it was my intention to foster their own creativity on the game and let them come to their own conclusions on how to run it best. (but I can agree on a look back of the script it is a bit much at times!) Some of my other videos focus a lot more on the details of the game, if that's more to your fancy!
Very helpful video, but oh my god you just reminded me about Hawken. I was never any good but that game was always so cool to me and definitely is part of why I'm planning a Lancer campaign 8 years later

Neat video! I've never heard anyone describe Lancer as a roleplay heavy game before since the pilot rules are kind of really anemic compared to the mech combat, but certainly an interesting perspective!
Thanks! I've seen a bunch of ways to play both lancer, and other games using the blades in the dark base system, many of which that allow the players to craft a more detailed narrative grab my attention! More than happy to recommend the friends at the table podcast on Spotify!
IMO the way that triggers work and how there isn't actually that many rules for pilots leaving it up for interpretation makes the game easier on the roleplaying side as the players aren't bombarded with too many mechanics and can stretch their legs more. I hadn't run this system yet but as I am reading the rules I keep thinking how so many of the things my players struggled with in 5e are just streamlined in this system.
first time GMing and second time playing Lancer overall, and almost none of my players have played a TTRPG before, this video is a godsend and I really appreciate this upload.

I once had a project to adapt Cogent Roleplay made by @TableTopTime to be able to use mech pilots and mech with the various Titan fall 2 frames. ended up scrapping the project but I wrote a mini campaign to go with it. NOW WITH THIS muahaha ... I may be able to run my module with a system dedicated to mech combat!
THAT SOUNDS SO COOL!!!! (I once helped my friend build a fallout new Vegas 5e adaptation before WOTC released theirs it was rough around the edges but super fun)
If you want to get into DMing and you're concerned about copying things, don't, I should be called 40K because I be stealing everything all the time for all types of TTRPGS.
A book I've been reading has this section about how the author and his friend (both DM's) use a note for movie cliches they love to use in game and players never make the connection LOL

Im reading the Corebook at the Moment and Im hyped! I realy want to make this a thing in my local Club, if it is as good as it seems.
In my head though it was like a Western with Mechs until this point😂 watching this, I realized I can do a lot more, if I want. But maybe still start small with the SciFi Western Idea for the start😅

It can be western, ruins exploration, mystery story, war story (even though the setting limits the war aspect), sports...
I personally believe this game is better than and deserves more players than DND 5e. Recently found this game thanks to a friend and we are LOVING lancer. It's so much fun. There's so much freedom in what you can do, speccing into any mech to mix and match parts and build whatever you want! So many options and it's always cool!

Both of these issues are related to LCPs (Lancer Content Packs). Basically add on modules that have data for new frames / manufacturers / weapons / skills / talents / etc.
If you are trying to make NPCs you need to the "Lancer Core NPCs". You get this when you buy the book (digital or physical).
