The Ten are just the known colony ships that were launched, and only four canonical names are known: Apollo, Armstrong, Ayat, and Ygrassil. More than likely there were more than ten colony ships launched; needless to say, the fandom and 3rd party content producers can (and do) have a field day with this.
It’s also worth noting not all of the ten ships are noted to have been found. There could be a human space empire bigger than Union just over the metaphorical hill started by one or more of the ten. Or there’s a ten ship about to arrive at a core Union world. There is also doubtless a ten ship lost in space, drifting dead in the water perhaps. There’s a lot of freedom, which is great because it inspires the fandom to have fun and add to the world/galaxy

The best good faith reason I can think of for why the near light tech was found in the vault is that they'd only finally worked out the kinks right before before the nuclear fire and proper collapse. So without time or spare resources to build more near light ships for an exodus, they left it for those who came after. A final gift from humanity's height to rebuild and improve on what came before. After that, some variation of those with the tech saving who they could while leaving a copy and manual for the good of those who survived, knowing that to announce their actions openly would risk the ships never launching, or worse, being targeted for a strike along with the masses clambering for salvation that couldn't be spared.
Brudda, your series perfectly bridges the gap presented in WH40k between the collapse and the current setting. This is also applicable to the sci-fi genre on a whole as well if doing an anthology. Great work, 😅👌 thanks!

Okay! Lancer lore now makes a significant amount of more sense. I had misunderstood and just thought it was from 20XX to 5000u. Having a TEN THOUSAND year gap between Us (+ couple centuries) and Them makes a lot more sense.
