To the people who say this is nothing like real fighting I suggest you give it a go. This is the JKA. Both in the dojo and in tournaments its not uncommon for teeth to be knocked out (and spat out) and bones to be broken and the fight just carries on as if nothing happened. I've seen people get knocked out many times. There are no pads, often no mouth-guards. Decades ago when I was young I was nidan with the JKA. If you don't think the JKA senseis in Japan can fight, try them out with your weekend MMA moves and see how far you get.
Old school JKA Shotokan, the one that really works in the streets. These days WKF tournaments are more like well... just go back to JKA.. with WKF rules you learn to kind of unfight. OF course someone fighting in WJF tournament doesnt mean that he/she can also be bad ass JKA karateka.
I remember when I took Shotokan 40 years ago on my High school days but just for 1 month. we sparred bare-fist and no armor but we are not allowed to punch and kick the face, only the body. but most of the time there were astray strikes hitting the face; and some have nose bleed, and injure lips or contusion mark.
what the people wanted to see is a continuous punching and then followed by a kick. This Shotokan way is to deliver even one punch that can can knockout. That is why the force exerted on a punch or kick. It is not to pounce an opponent by flurry of punches but to give one or two strikes and it is over. here in this tournament the players are to control their punches not to seriously injure. I hope one can get a punch on the face and we will see.

This is reality in an unarmed fighting whether or not combat sport. when the face can be punch or kick with bare knuckle punch or foot, no one is stupid to go on attacking. if it is the body that can be punch many can be brave to keep attacking.

You do the reality- do not just attack and punch and punch like they do in some kumite. When you are hit on the face with bare knuckle, surely, you will disengaged instinctively and you do not keep attacking but take timing.
