How Is Chennai Faring 8 Months Since Plastic Ban? | The Quint

  • On 1 January 2019, the Tamil Nadu government issued a ban on non-biodegradable and single-use plastics. Eight months down the line, how is the city faring? The Quint visited different areas in Chennai to do a reality check.
    Since the ban, major shops including supermarkets, have switched to bio-degradable alternatives to plastic like paper or steel straws, cloth or jute bags, paper or bio-degradable plastic covers, etc. But it is the small vendors, road-side eateries and markets who are still forced to provide the customer with a plastic bag.

      Prohibitive taxation looses utility because it enables illegal trade. Because then it incentivizes theft of tax. It has to be a nation wide plastic ban. With regulations fixing thickness of plastic, as in microns. Making legal plastics easily recyclable.

      Yes because ban always works and doesn't enables illegal trade. Agree on the "easily recyclable" part. Manufacturers should be held accountable for the garbage they create. To start with, companies with a certain turnover and above should recollect their packagings and such, For eg. Pepsi should have a network to call back the bottles and recycle it in-house.

      "economically viable" It's a well established system in european countries. Manufacturer can charge ₹5 extra when we buy the product and buy the empty packaging back from the consumer for the same. "Increase GST" You mean TAX..! Nothing is 100% recyclable, especially plastic. With the Recalling system manufacturer can reuse the packaging.

    There are almost 10,000 engineering colleges in india, even if government choses top 500 collges for research and development for finding alternative for plastic ,there is high probability that they will find alternative. This will not only solve the major problem of plastic but also help students acquire skills and experience which may help them fetch jobs. But what government do is BAN which is the most unaffective way to tackle plastic problem as if people had alternative they would be using that.

Most advanced subjects like bio technology failed in India, because of lack of research. To find area specific solutions colleges must play an important role.

      @@aryendrapalsingh4131 Bro, I am doing my PhD from IISc under PMRF. Trust me, finding an alternative for plastic is very, very difficult. • @aryendrapalsingh4131
      @aryendrapalsingh4131 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ankitchaubey1583 There has been success to various companies in making biodegradable plastics from sea weed, mushroom roots, and many more. Even in India there is a company named biogreen which is making biodegradable plastic bags, but these alternatives could not be commercially viable as resources they are using are limited. But regular and focussed research, maybe you know this better as you are actually doing things in India's best research college would give a sustainable solution in long run. For example, in an particular area suppose material 'X' is found which can be used for making plastic alternative but material available is limited to fulfill the need of whole country but can fulfill the need of an area. Hence, area based solution can tackle the problem of single use plastic and for this educational institutions have to play crucial role, by empowering students with critical thinking and research oriented minds.

    Make report on waste management. Not using all these plastics will result to major hygiene issues. Problem is waste management. Illiteracy amongst the crowd regarding waste disposal. Lack of waste bins around. Proper recycling of these plastics for better end use like roads and construction. These are good and interesting videos. But expect you to get the topic right. Make one on waste management and how the government has put an effort towards it. This is a government waste management failure diverted to ban and these things. Ban is a good idea only when provided with a legit alternative otherwise it’s just harassment to the citizens.

(all in packed plastic carry bags. ) The school's walls red "avoid plastic". I tought it would be a good pic. But then to add icing to the cake came a cop.He was in his uniform happily smiling while ignoring the plastic totally. All these 3 factors of the wall /covers/cop really gave life to that picture. I am so happy someone is making a piece of news about this.

    Restaurant, Hotels or any other places will try to look after it
    In my view it is much easier (not that easy 😅)to look over a planned/ sort of designed system or sector.
    They can be fined. Nd many try to cooperate consciously over the ban.
    But greater portion of the problem linger towrds the irregular sector/system
    If you want to just wipe plastic everywhere, one thing is always needed i.e Substitute.
    We must find a practical, competent substitute.

    Rather than trying to ban single use plastic packaging and bags government should regulate and control polyethylene (raw material). Supply chain traceability required.

    I've tried carrying cloth bags with me but the problem is that men don't have big purses like women and the bags don't fit in pockets. Same for the spoon and fork.
    But still I'm trying. I've started carrying a bag on my bike for that purpose. Change is already starting and even one less plastic bag is an improvement. 👍👍👍

    Highlighted plastic straws used by the coconut vendor but did not realise that both plastic and paper straws were packed in plastic! Another point made by a businessman about sourcing of raw materials for all the paper products. It’s sad that everybody wants to just jump in and join the Green Revolution without really understanding what it actually means.

    Why raid consumers? Raid the manufacturers. That's must be limited no. of factories. Or do they pay enough bribe to keep their plastic manufacturing factories safe?
    And why the hell do you need to switch to paper plate or banana leaves? Cutting down trees make environment safe? What is the problem is buying permanent plates, that you can wash and resuse?

    • @parthibank5215
      @parthibank5215 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      banana leaves degradable and give farmers some profit from it. But yes it should be available in reasonable price.

    • @dnil87
      @dnil87 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@parthibank5215 It's not about reasonable pricing or being degradable. Plastics are most reasonable in terms of pricing. Cutting down trees or damaging it to make banana leaves available is not an environmentally sustainable process. It damages a crucial component of the environment. The trees. Hence should be avoided. Overuse of paper will cause the same thing. Reusability,along with bio-degredablity, is the first and foremost condition of any sustainable process.

    • @parthibank5215
      @parthibank5215 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dnil87 some variety of banana trees are grown by farmers mainly for banana leaves. Moreover they only cut the leaves and send it to market not the entire tree. i accept the point with paper. But that can be countered by encouraging farmers to grow casuarina trees which will be available to harvest in 2-3 years.

    Why are you blaming Chennai alone@The quint.
    And even if you want to ban plastics why don't you say to ban items like lays(PepsiCo),cheetos(PepsiCo),Britannia, top ramen,nestle,cadbury etc..etc...companies to ban polypropylene packaging(food packet's of these items are made of this plastic)in their items.Oh..let me guess they are all not made of plastics right?
    They are corporate companies so you don't say anything to them and you just want to blame Chennai!!!
    Biodegradable bags are still eco- friendly.If you don't have good knowledge about plastics then kindly don't speak.Thank you.And of course the anchor is cute in this video.Thanks again.
