The actor who played Sam did get a lot more buff at this point. He was filming the remake of Friday the 13th and he said in an interview that if he was meant to be fighting Jason then he didn’t want to look like a skinny kid.
My favorite season! I too at this point was hoping for some 'light' to enter the scene. Castiels entrance is still one of the best. The chemistry/interactions between Dean and Castiel in this season were very powerful to me. As to the rest, I was a tad disappointed that we didn't get to see Dean in Hell, but got over that quickly. It took a little bit to get used to the new Ruby but I did. I loved so much the humor in this episode, always good when they get that in this 'dark' story. I am looking forward to watching you this season!
oh in case no one else mentions, the newspaper he reads in the gas station is the same date the episode aired and he went to Hell on May 15, 2008 so that answers how long he was there. I do not know how much you follow conventions (you need to be careful of those for spoilers) but the song that is played in the impala is a friend of Jensens that played at most of the early conventions and I give him (Jason) credit for pushing Jensen to start singing with him on stage.
I've always thought S4-S6 Jared/Sam would have made a perfect Superman. Just put in blue eye contacts and *Presto* the Man of Steel. He's tall, buffy, and has that good guy aura about him.

Around season 4-5 Jared auditioned for Conan but Jason Momoa got it that's why Jared was so buffed💪
