- Spider-Man No Way Home is finally out, so I decided to go back through the Spider-Man movies and review each era of Spider-Man. We're starting with the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy. These were the three main movies I grew up with and they mean a lot to me. These movies were also responsible for helping bring superhero movies and interests to the mainstream. #spiderman #spidermannowayhome #tobeymaguire

Say what you want about Spider-Man 3, but at least it gave us those hilarious Bully Maguire scenes.
They hurt me to watch the first time in the theater, but man do I love them now.
I still love spiderman 3.
Exactly, Spiderman 3 came out almost 15 years ago and it’s still memeable.
I still love Spider-Man 3. It wasn't as great as the two movies that came before it, but it was still a very fun movie.
@@Zapatozi SM3 has always been a good movie. Ppl only hate on it because of Venom and what is now known as the "Bully Maguire" scenes. lol I think it's 3rd act is a bit messy, but up until then I really think it was on par with the 1st 2 films. Hell, if you put aside that Topher Grace was playing Eddie Brock, he's actually a funny character. Like when Jameson asks "What's that smell?" and Eddie says "It's BROCK, sir..." I laughed so hard. lol
I always loved this Spider-Man. 3 is an absolute mixed bag. It's a shame the studio pushed so many demands off on Raimi then blamed him for it's issues.
Tobey is and always will be my childhood Spider-Man. The first 2 Spider-Man movies are my favorites.
true dat. into the spiderverse is a work of art, but i dont think any spiderman movie could ever top the first two for me
The Raimi trilogy aka the Spiderman trilogy I grew up watching.
I'm part of the tobey maguire Era
Same
Tobey Maguire is the most special spiderman because he was the only one with a cool looking emo haircut 💯💯
fax🅱️🅱️
Willem Dafoe single handedly made this movie for me. He totally knew how to ham it up as a villain and you can tell he had a lot of fun putting is passion into this project.
Simmons also kills it as Peter's boss at the newspaper. That guy totally cracks me up and probably would make a great stand-up comedian in a different life.
My only gripe with this movie is a big one with the other Toby Mcquire era of movies: MJ's CHARACTER. Don't get me wrong, Dunst as an actress is hot as hell and easy on the eyes but, would it kill any of these movies to do MJ's character justice? This trilogy strictly kept her relegated to an 80's style damsel in distress. There's more to MJ than that.
Kristen Dunst had the same complaints with MJs character. When MJ picks up a piece of wood to try and hit Doc Ock, that was Kristen's suggestion. Raimi had to actually apologize to her because how 3 was rewritten and MJ was regulated to a damsel in distress again.
Mj was such a shitty character in all the movies, she constantly switched between people (Harry, Peter, JJJ’s son, and flash) that shit was so annoying. She got upset at peter for being Spider-Man in Spider-Man 3 but In Spider-Man 2 she agreed to the idea of Spider-Man there’s more but i wanna watch the video.
spiderman 1&2 will always be my favorite I always liked Toby's web swings his background music his villain's sure spiderman 3 wasn't the greatest but the final fight scene was awesome
Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 are classics at this point!
The first film is an absolute classic Hollywood feature. Everything about it from its use of blending practical with CGI visuals, the musical score from Danny Elfman, the grounded and gritty action scenes, incredible performances and character development, emotional beats and a really strong message - it’s phenomenal. The films quieter moments such as Spidey and MJ kissing upside down in the rain is also just such an iconic film moment in the same vein as Star Wars’ “I am your father” moment.
Spider-Man 2 is honestly one of the best sequels ever made, and it isn’t just a great sequel, it’s just an all around great film! The moral complexities of all the characters are taken to new heights, and just like with the first film, I love the way director Sam Raimi builds up the friendship of Otto Octavius and Peter Parker before they become enemies. It makes the moment when Peter redeems Otto so captivating and special. The films action scenes are truly something special, once again practical and visual effects were fused together to well. Just an all around great film.
Spider-Man 3 certainly is the most studio manufactured of the bunch, however I still think there’s so much to enjoy here. The CGI is truly the best in the trilogy, and the film even looks better than most films released today! The score and the cinematography is so grand, and the darker feel is great. I thought Sandman and Harry’s arcs were nicely rounded out, and honestly the moment where Spider-Man returns to help stop Venom and the city of New York cheers, that is a truly iconic moment!
Overall an amazing set of films that probably will forever remain one of the best Marvel trilogies!
The Raimi trilogy is still the best Spider-Man movies ever made and they've all aged really well. While I do agree Venom was rushed in Spider-Man 3, that movie as a whole is so underrated
what was especially powerful about the burning building scene in spiderman 2 was how he couldnt save someone else and he realizes that he cant save everyone or something. beautiful movie
I think people always forget that Peter kissed and there for cheated on MJ first by kissing Gwen Stacy.
But ultimately I think the relationship is more realistic, sometimes relationships aren't pretty, they both added bad moments to their relationship
Once again you people call Peter a cheater and never mention how MJ pretty much only cheated throughout the movies
@@datboi42 I think you need to calm down. If you want people to make a list than thats your problem. My comment was shining a light on Peters faults in the relationship because the video was focused on MJs faults like she was the only bad in the relationship, people tend to forget Peters issues. I even ended my comment saying they both were terrible.
In the first movie she cheated on Harry with Spider-Man, second movie she didn't cheat but she did say yes to some guy to marry him then leave him at the alter in front of his family and friends, probably very devastated and humiliated to go be with Peter which is just as flicked up. Wait no she technically cheated on him too. Left him with a goddamn note...
Third movie she cheats on Peter with Harry and yeah yeah I get he cheated first which btw was such a fucked up thing to do, like he wasn't even infected with the symbiote yet to make that sort of behavior more understandable but he was completely fine in that scene. Yeah pumped with ego and whatnot but still so out of character for Peter, it's really really bad writing.
Anyway yeah she cheated on Peter and sure felt bad about it but cheating is cheating.
This was a horrible couple and MJ is a horrible girlfriend
@@datboi42 I guess you didn't really read my comment then. I'm not part of a you people group. I bring up the other side, the alternative point of view. The point is MJ and Peter sucked throughout their relationship, but MJ always gets the blame, I just point out, they both are terrible to each other.
My favorite movie trilogy ever!!!!!
Personally I would say mine is the original trilogy from Star Wars followed by Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition trilogy
@@Lord-Emperor-Vader I can agree with those but I feel like these movies and blade and X Men inspired every superhero movie in DC and Marvel. And I think this one inspired it the most.
@@icemantopgun1008 They would not exist without Star Wars since the movies pushed practical effects to new place
@@Lord-Emperor-Vader very fair
Spider-Man 2 is my favourite superhero movie. Nothing to do with nostalgia. When you watch something so many times, consistently over the years, it's not a far flung memory. I know the movies and how they play out.
And because of Spider-Man 2 I often find myself getting annoyed with the MCU. As good as they can be, they're just not as impactful overall. Maybe a lot of people will disagree but I find the Spider-Man trilogy, even when it faltered, just more drama driven and therefore more satisfying. Superhero comics are punch ups and soap operas and the Tobey films embodied that. The MCU films are more quippy and actiony. Character clashes happen often but the dramatic impact is limited to only a few films really. Like Civil War and Winter Soldier. I just feel like they often just want to get through the plot or quickly reach the next action scene or joke, even when there's a lot of characterisation lurking beneath the surface. It's actually remarkable in comparison how much time is spent in Spider-Man 2 with Peter Parker just... not being Spider-Man. Just watching a character being his character, while still finding time to lighten it up with comedy.
Well explained!
I agree partially but yeah. In my opinion tho the movies aren't as good as they were when i was younger. they're more cringy now lol but it's okay it's still dear to me. But for me after seeing No Way Home, it's now the best Spider-Man movie for me. It's up there with Into The Spider-Verse and Spider-Man 2. But to me the best superhero movie is Man of Steel. I know weird opinion lol.
I really disagree! Captain America Winter soldier had me feeling what Cap was feeling. Civil war has some ofnthr best Acting between evans and rdj. Guardians has you smiling every scene and hits you in the gut everytime starlords mom scenes happen. Infinity war made everyone sad i mean Thanos actually won!! We never see Villains win. Ive felt alot of moments in the MCU. If Spider-Man NWH is the direction we are going now we are in for some impact full movies to come
@@SmashKing17 i praised Winter Soldier and Civil War in my post if it wasn't clear enough. Really significant emotional impact in the MCU is limited to a few films... And we're talking what, 20+ movies now? Even then, Civil War's events are less interesting in hindsight because all drama was quickly resolved after (War Machine got robo legs or something and Cap and Iron Man quickly resolved their differences)
For me no way home might be my favorite spiderman movie. It had the quippy humor that I've always liked from classic spiderman without sacrificing the drama. As someone that has been a huge spiderman fan, the raimi films didn't resonate with me the way I wanted them to. I respect the impact they had on the superhero genre, but I don't love them the way others do.
I'm really loving all the Spider-Man retrospectives that are coming out for No Way Home.
I loved most of the Trilogy.....
Tobey Maguire is my fav since I was a kid and will always be my favorite but this new movie is probably my favorite Spider-Man movie now is has everything any Spider-Man fan would want I cried and get like a kid again 😭😂
I’ve waited 14 years for this man😭
As a kid I really liked Tobey. Now as I’m older the movies have a bit of a cringy factor. But I think what I really Enjoyed with the Raimi films is that they really made Peter have a lot of internal conflicts and moral questioning.
The other movies I don’t really get those vibes from them. Excerpt maybe in homecoming in the end but idk it felt more of a coming of age movie rather than Peter having a whole different view on something .
It's literally all over the place in the Andrew Garfield films.
My biggest gripe with the Raimi trilogy is that Mary Jane gets kidnapped and used as bait in every single movie Lol
After a while, the same overused plot device just feels annoying and repetitive. But outside of that, it's a near-perfect trilogy. (Yes, even with Pt.3 and all of its faults)
I absolutely love spiderman one, but watching it now I constantly keep thinking it seems rushed, the pace is just crazy fast. Everything seems so rushed, scenes go by so quick and things just happen one after the other. That being said, weirdly it works. Glad they fixed the pace in the second
I actually like all the Spiderman movies. Tobey is the goat. Tom Holland legit a good Peter Parker and a good Spiderman, and Garfield is legit a good Spiderman, don't dig his Peter Parker in the first 2 but he was his own Peter Parker in No Way Home.
What I love about the movies is that almost every character is average, and it makes the few who stand out really stand out, look better. It’s just immersive to see what looks to be regular people, rather than the overly attractive everyone Hollywood has today
Thank you Jay, I appreciate your thoughts on bringing up the studio interference and the directors view on Venom. Puts Spider-Man 3 in perspective. Love this video you put together!
That being said, I will happily watch Spider-Man 3 any day. I love it just as much as the other two films. Personally, I will take that over half the MCU movies out there. Spider-Man 3 still makes me FEEL just as much as the first two.
Also, I do give a pass on Mary Jane’s flaws in her character because unlike Gwen from TASM (who’s grown up in a relatively happy well rounded household) and unlike MCU MJ (who we know almost nothing about her background or family), we are shown that Mary Jane grew up in an abusive household. Her actions/decisions can be very flawed sometimes as a young lady that grew up with some heavy emotional baggage. To me that makes some sense.
Awesome video 👏
I honestly think spider-man 1 is the worst of the trilogy, out of the 3 it’s got the least going on, although I give it credit for the fact that it’s so iconic.
great video jay! love your superhero content and can’t wait for the rest of these
Thank you so much I really appreciate it!
Unreal breakdown, great job.
The MJ breakdown in Spider-Man 2 was so accurate. You took the thoughts from my head and put them into words
Dude, Tobey was the FIRST, that is why he is so iconic as Spiderman.
Having him and Andrew in Spiderman: No Way Home, was THE ONLY way to finish a trilogy.
You actually achieved something. You talked about Spider-Man 3 without talking about Emo Peter lol
I started reading this and was like is this a compliment or insult, but I quickly realized it's an insult because only a loser would talk about 3 without mentioning the Emoness of it.
Note that it was Sony’s fault interrupting raimi on directing Spider-Man 3
imagine Spider-Man 3 with full raimi directory can do
Sony ruined Spider-Man 3
...yet I still think it’s great
It's very back and forth watching spiderman 3.
Sometimes I love it sometimes I dislike it.
This is the Spider-Man I grew up on. Hands down the goat. Classic story telling and actions scenes that surpass even current super hero movies today. His acting Peter and Spider-Man is mint mechanical. You really see and understand his version of Spider-Man. Love these movies. Also Spider-Man man 3 is great imo. Don’t get the hate
the raimi movies were a big part of my childhood and as a DC fanboy i cant help myself to love spiderman just because of this triology
Go Spidey Go!
I'd like to see spiderman 4 while he is still in his 40s. I believe he is 46 right now so I think if they do a spidermans 4 they could skip his timeline in his universe since he is a older peter parker now.
The first two Spider-man films are still my favorite Spider-Man film.
We all can’t forget the pill scene in Spiderman 3 with JK Simmons. Honestly the best part about that movie
Spider-man 3 is an underrated gem and the black suit theme is as iconic as any theme in the super hero world
10000000% AGREE !!!!
Spider-Man 3 has its issues, but it still holds a special place in my heart lol. I really loved the theme of forgiveness and they were so close to nailing it. I think Harry should’ve been the main and maybe only villain. Have him systematically try to take out Spider-Man on all fronts, while at the same time Peter has gotten the black suit, which has of course altered his personality. There’s enough there for a story about forgiveness. And then, as you said, bring Eddie/Venom into the 4th movie.
But I gotta say..what really resonated with me was what you said about superhero scores. Man are they lacking some impactful music these days!
One of the greatest trilogies of all time "One of the greatest trilogies of all time"
My guy, you gotta drive that funky soul
Did you use some kind of filter on Spider-Man ps4 gameplay to look more the raimi movies
You know what's funny is I had an issue with my HDR capture card. I use the elgato 4K HD and it has HDR capabilities but I messed up a setting and then I realized that it did look more like the movie so I just did not mess with it because I liked the way it looked for the recording. It was what Bob Ross would call a happy accident.
Was really looking forward to No Way Home, but they just issued another lockdown here, so theatres are closed once again 😔
great video my guy, keep it up! 👍🏼🙌🏼
I would say Spiderman 1 was a good starting point for superhero movies, but shouldn't have been the benchmark for what origin stories should look like(arguably a lot of the early 2000s superhero movies suffered from doing just that). Also how Spiderman 3 introduced the symbiote is a far cry from the comics introduced it. Understandable given the comic origins for the suit.
Oh it’s been 7 seconds lol.
Actually if it wasn't for the first Superman movie from the late 70s, superhero movies were still a gamble then. When they first made the movie. The costume designer said the hardest part was making the suits. Especially the lenses of the mask. Number two was my favorite as well. The extended cut had longer fight scenes, and I like the effects better.
@Degenerate Jay, Are you planning on reviewing Spider Man No Way Home?
that is funny because i am also showing my mom all of the these movies before i watch the newest spiderman movie
Tobey is the best in my opinion.
Super hero scores actually matter for real I’m not sure what happened in the 2010’s but the last memorable theme was wonder woman’s outside of that I find most but not all superhero films lack in the music department and for me sometimes it doesn’t hit the same without the iconic music
Nwh was A W E S O M E what do you think
When I look at Tobey's suit I think of three bloopers of Toy Story 2. When Mrs. Potato Head says she packed Mr. Potato Head's angry eyes just in case.
I know they look better than the comic style eyes the suit has in the E3 trailer for the first movie but his Spider-Man always just looks so aggressive. Which to me doesn't feel like Spider-Man. That is why I love TASM2 suit.
They never added TASM2 suit idk why?
My childhood movie's
Bully Maguire is unbeatable
Honestly the only reason that I criticized Spider-Man 3 is because I feel threatened by bully Maguire. Just don't tell anybody. It's very emasculating.
Did you ever find out what the “RA” was?
⚠️⚠️⚠️DONT forget Blade🥇 came out 1st in 1999 and really started our comic book era of movies AND it redefined cool. the matrix and xmen took the kungfu in all black with a trench coat, shades, and lot of guns n leather from Blade🥇🥇🥇💪💪
Westley Snipes is and always was the baddest cold as ice🥶 🧊mfkr around🤴🤴🤴
Hey there I lobe ur vids anyways I always thought people overly hate spiderman three when I saw that first I thought if it as good as the first 2 I don't think the 3rd one is the worst infact I'd go so far as to say it's my fav out of the 3
As a kid it was my favorite but now it’s easily my least favorite Spider-Man movie of all including Garfield and Holland movies. It’s such a hassle just to try and finish it
As a kid it was my favorite but now it’s easily my least favorite Spider-Man movie of all including Garfield and Holland movies. It’s such a hassle just to try and finish it
I did enjoy it, Can’t wait for Andrew Garfield’s movies!
Thank you so much!!!
JAY, serious question, 4:30 are u playing that on an emulator or there's an actual working PC port somehow?? I played it on PC when I was like 7 8, That game was my entire childhood! I know it by heart I haven't played it in so long, would appreciate if anyone knows how to find a working version of it on PC these days
So there is an emulator that you can legally play to my understanding on PC which is what I was using for this. I own the game discs for the entire Raimi trilogy of Spider-Man games and took my own bios because I own a couple of different PlayStation 2 consoles. The thing that makes it illegal for emulation is illegally downloading software (the games) and downloading a different bios to run the emulator (which is usually given out for free online with the emulator or found somewhere else) So for me, I went out and I just bought these game discs cuz I really like collecting them anyway and then I plugged in my bios and just played it on my computer and did my best to mess around with the settings in the PCSX2 emulator to get it running as good as possible. My big issue with that though is that it's hit or miss. Like for example the perfect settings to play this game didn't work at all for Spider-Man 2 and it had buildings phasing out of existence and glitches everywhere and so I had to mess around with it so it's one of those things where it's not as easy as just popping your disc in and playing. You also often have to dump the disc onto your own desktop in order to play it otherwise it stutters from the disc so it's kind of a complex process but there's a ton of different walkthroughs on TH-cam as to how to actually set it up well that I would recommend over me trying to explain it in a convoluted comment because I barely understood how I did it myself.
@@DegenerateJay huh so not exactly a walk in the park but still possible. Shame really most of these awesome games get lost due to their age and devs not caring enough to preserve them. Knowing how much u care about the topic, happy to hear you're collecting some of the great ones.
Thanks a bunch man! Hopefully I can get this game running, a lotta nostalgia just from watching ur footage really made me wanna play again
If you thought Willem Dafoe killed it in the first one, whoooo boy are you gonna live No Way Home.
spiderman 3 is still my favorite
Everybody is reviewing these movies now
Why do you sound like foggy from daredevil?
SEE YA CHUMP...
Am I the only one who thinks that Raimi's Spider-Man is the most serious one?
"Twilight gone wrong"... But... Twilight IS wrong. All of it 🤣
IF PETER PARKER WAS IN 2021 HE WOULD HAVE ACCEPTED NORMAN'S JOB OFFER
Well especially living in 2021 New York I have no idea how that man would ever afford even living in a closet off of his salary at the bugle lol
@@DegenerateJay uk not just new york but in my country as well
Rami Spiderman is best bc it's easy to see tofer as a lame, I can't see garfield or the new kid as a lame, also my Spiderman is a college student. In hind sight think that's why it works the best, it being the first and our age plays a big part but I think what I mentioned seals the deal
I honestly didn't mind venom to be in spider man 3 and I don't really find mary jane unsympathetic plus Kirsten Dunst she never read the spidey comics anyway can you blame her
Spiderman 2 is an amazing movie 🍿
I think Spider-Man 2 is boring and overrated. I think it's the worst of the trilogy, but is not a bad film. My ranking is
1. Spider-Man
2. Spider-Man 3
3. Spider-Man 2
I like the new content
The best era
15:20
Mary was such a horrible charecter/person in the trilogy , it makes it hard to watch the trilogy.
Cz so much of what happens to him is directly or indirectly related to mj
I love the films don't assume I hate them
I love them too but yeah she really drags them down for me at least in 2 and 3.
@@DegenerateJay same
Even as a kid i hated the charecter
Tobey the best
I remember this film cinema i hate spider man 3 i think batman and robin is better spider man 3
It will have nostalgic biasness
18:08 That is not comic accurate.
You really convey complex concepts (sorry 'bout the tongue twister) in a way that anyone can understand Jay
Hey thanks dude I at least try. I'm certainly not the smartest person in the room usually though and I find most people who purposely play up intellectualism instead of trying to explain themes and stories more thoroughly are usually just doing so to sound intelligent... So I try and find a middle ground with it. I appreciate the kind words a lot.
@@DegenerateJay No worries mate
NGL Venom made Spider-Man 3 better. If he wasn’t in the movie it would be meh
