The Alchitry Au is the "gold" standard for FPGA development boards and it's possibly one of the strongest boards of its type on the market. FPGAs, or Field-Programmable Gate Arrays, are an advanced development board type for engineers and hobbyists alike to experience the next step in programming with electronics. The Au continues the trend of more affordable and increasingly powerful FPGA boards arriving each year. This board is a fantastic starting point into the world of FPGAs and the heart of your next project.

I think the book Digital Design and Computer Architecture is a good starting point. It’s a thin & easy text book covering all the info you need to implement a simple CPU. I first read that book in high school and learned so much from it.

    That's wonderfully explained about fpgas.

Been working with FPGAs for 20 yrs. There are many levels you can work at. Glue logic, IPs, System of IPs and soft (or hard) core MCU, drivers for IPs you created, OS + drivers for System you created, applications for OS for System you created, Basically the whole digital electronics domain.

@sparkFunelectronics board guys can you suggest the low cost fpga evaluation/ development boards....for dsp stuff

Digilent has some nice boards with more Convenient io build in.
These are nice but blinking leds gets boring quick. PMods let you connect anything from as simple as rs232 to as advance as vga and there are a ton of them available!

Ten candy bars at once! That’s an FPGA.

Thks, you convinced me with 10candy bars shoved into my mouth all at once & I'm going FPGA (!wuhoo.... ;).

I want the basic one with the element boards... Too many things to play with, but too little time! Anyone use these and have any words of wisdom or good resources to learn this stuff? I'm good with general microcontroller, C, as I am a software eng in real life.

alchitry.com/ is a good place to start. Really good resource with some well explained tutorials.

He is one of those people who are able to convince billionaires to buy paintings with bananas taped to a canvas for millions. Not saying FPGAs are like that;)

It's amazing how cheap FPGAs have gotten. You couldn't enter in to any worthwhile FPGAs for under $200 like 10 years ago.

I'm not trying to be rude, but, usually when we use analogies, it's to explain a complicated topic in terms of something more familiar to people in attempt to simplify it.
My problem with the analogy in this video is that, while programmable devices and electronics, etc., IN GENERAL, can definitely be complicated, the concept of doing 10 things at once is not.
If we are unable to visualize what it means to be able to do multiple things simultaneously as opposed to in series and we need an analogy to explain this concept to us, then we probably have no business learning about FPGA boards, or really much of anything, for that matter.
I understand making things easy to understand, but at least give us SOME credit.

Sorry but I am laughing right now. His accent made gate arrays sound like gatorade.

No real competition. Digilent have better boards for same price. Sparkfun has more elegant and tiny ones, but its should be for half price they put it on. 10$ for artyx7 chip ,add 10$ for simple pcb development And you can sell for 50$ *mass* simple fpga boards( Arduino like). Not for 100$, when i can buy for 130$ arty A7 board.
