  • After a lot of filming, we take charge in this video and explore the Virginia side of the CV as well as visit 2 of the active load outs on the subdivision! We visit both Balkan and NRG as they load Eastman trains with the New York Central heritage Unit! We also visit the Virginia side of the CV and see the New Connection at Big Stone Gap as well as take a deep dive into operations at Hagan's Switchback; the ONLY operating switchback in America! This adventure is definitely one not seen often so I hope you enjoy!
And a special shout-out to Conductor Russel Smith and Engineer Zac Hendrickson who was our crew for the Virginia portion of the chase! Great guys!

Great video, however, I believe that there is another switchback located just south of Bayard, WV, on the CSX Thomas Subdivision where the Stony River Sub begins. Regardless, Hagans is certainly a unique operation. I hope to make it down there one of these days.

As far as I’m aware, Hagans is the only one and is titled so by sources such as Trains Magazine. To the best of my knowledge, the operation you’re referring to isn’t classified as a switchback and is solely trackage. I may be wrong, just basing my info off of sources I read on a regular basis. If anyone else knows of anything feel free to drop a comment below!

@@railfanmicahturner The interesting thing with the "switchback" near Bayard is that I would agree that it's not technically a switchback if Bayard Yard is still in operation, but now that Bayard Yard is unused, trains heading to Mt. Storm power plant traverse the reverse there without crew change or any other type of stoppage. I would argue that would make it a switchback as what difference to the Hagans operation would there be?

why do the trains NOT pull directly into the yard and designated tracks there and breakup into 45 cars on each yard ladder ? excellent video quality & content, drone & ground done great.. thanks a bunch

The empties come back in the full set of 90 and all load at the same time, then come back loaded in 2 cuts of 45. With no rear pushers and no crossovers down further in, they have no way to cut when going towards Loyall, so they shove as many as they can fit to make the job a little easier. Hope this clears things up!

Really great drone work but I could’ve done without that constant bell ringing in the beginning. I still don’t understand how the switchback works and the point of it all. Also, I’ve never heard of an R symbol on CSX. What does that represent?

I toyed with the idea of the crossing bells in the beginning, however I didn’t have any other audio to substitute in for the clips. As for the switchback, I plan to revisit during the day for a better explanatory video in the future. For the 1853, I just had to take what I could get. Thanks for the feedback!

I forgot about the R symbols haha, R symbols typically run as prioritized mine runs. Empties will run under the E symbol to a general yard, for instance this weekend an E690 ran to Corbin, Ky. In Corbin, one of the local R symbols for the mine runs was ordered, this being R613 for NRG. The mine run operated as R613 to the loadout and then back to Corbin, where the loads was then profiled under the C153 symbol to its destination. It’s primarily for specific operations.

I see. Im familiar with the C and E but the R stumped me. There aren’t any coal mines near me is probably why I never heard about it. Another video on the switch back would be a great idea. I will be looking for it! Thanks
