I imagine a lot of people watching are like me and want to play at repairing watches. Because the thought of doing this with an expensive watch is not economically viable, these projects are perfect. Thank you.
I did the same back then, first with cheap russian pocket watches (it's great because of the bigger parts) than I bought a bunch of cheap soviet wristwatches to learn more, than I jumped to the more delicate ones, when I had the belief in myself 👌🏻
It always baffles me how something so intricate can be so affordable? How on earth do they align all those pivots during mass production? Thank you again for your videos. There is something really satisfying watching you work.
Wild that this exists for $30. Aside from the weird finishes and markings the tolerances seem decent and machining looks acceptable. For a practice watch these cant be beat.
Been watching a few watchmaker accounts and you are the first to recommend buying a cheap, but fully functioning mechanical watch to practice on. Such a great idea...
Really enjoyed the instruction and information. Super fresh my man. You don't realise, but from you, I always get that little extra bit of gem information that makes the penny drop. Thank you.
Happy new year! Here in the US, fireworks have been part of new year's celebration for as long as I've been alive, but like there, recently it's gone super max! It's always been firecrackers and such, just small, personal things, but last year and this year in particular I noticed a big shift, and realized that many of my neighbors are far more wealthy than I, haha. Hours of large mortars going off, boom... BOOOM!! Boom.... BOOOM!! Shaking windows and setting off car alarms. Crazy times! Here's to a fulfilling and prosperous 2024!! 🥂
It looks like I have the same movement (an 8215 clone from ebay). I'm glad you showed how to put the date spring back in. I lost mine a couple of times until I put the plate on first. More escape-proof :) Bookmarking this for when I'm brave enough to graduate from pocket-watches.
I have this exact movement and have been tempted to service it. I am really nervous about the large bridge. Thank you so much for showing me how it's done. Do more of these please. Next, do a NH35A movement!
Love your videos in general man but this series is really interesting. My mind is kind of blown by the cost of these watches compared to the tiny machined parts. I know the watches aren't high end but the parts are the part. 40 bucks for an automatic watch seems nuts even if it's inaccurate. I know technology and methods today make it a lot easier and cheaper to machine parts, but it makes me think about Breguet and how he created his movement over 200 years ago. No electricity, no CNC. No fine laser cutters. It's really amazing when you think about it.
Thanks for watching 🙏🏼 I think Breguet would be turning in his grave a little though 😅 it is mind blowing though how they used to do it. This is why I seriously admire the very few watchmakers out there that still produce very low numbers using the original traditional methods. I wish I had those kind of skills.
I really like these types of video presentations. However as a practical matter a cheap watch like this would never get serviced just replaced hopefully with a better movement. Seeing how this is done on a throw away watch may help us do some service on our more expensive pieces. Thanks again.

THAT’S what your accent is! I’ve been trying to figure it out over several videos, and had it pinned down to either the Netherlands, or potentially southern Sweden. It reminds me a great deal of my late Godfather. Good memories there.
Hey everyone, I have one of those in my drawer. Handsome watch, but it does stop between 10PM and 2AM. Most likely to a poor oiling job at the factory. It is also on the loud side. Not sure if I will ever treat it with a proper service. Unfortunately my butter fingers prevent me from taking up the task of maintaining the mechanism on my own. Thank you for great video!
That movement is nothing else than a Dixmond Guangzhou (DG) 2813. Which is a kind of clone of the Miyota 8215. The final plate is tricky to put in place, and there's a trick to do: rotate the triangle of the click spring and you'll remove the pressure on the reversing wheel, helping A LOT to put back that plate :) Then you can rotate it back in position after the plate has been secured and voilà! Before removing the balance, I prefer to open/remove the antishock spring and then remove the balance stones. Then yes, the balance and then the rest :)
I purchased a dive style automatic watch (Military Royale brand) from Walmart for $34.00 about 6 yrs ago. It kept good time and I wore it for about 3 yrs. After which I gave it to a friend that liked it. He still has it and it is still running.
Good job Mat, these cheap Asian movements are tricky to work on sometimes - here's hoping you get a nice jump in subscriber numbers! One question though - the magic of editing shows you took like 10 seconds to fully seat that huge bridge. Be honest, how long did it really take? 😀
Cheers Alan, hope you're doing well mate 👍🏼 haha about the bridge. To be totally honest it didn't take that long as it wasn't as bad as it looked as all but 1 of the wheels could be nudged as there was access. The main one that caused a little bit of extra assistance was the escape wheel as it really needed a tad bit of a longer pivot on it imo.
work HB! The chat about fireworks in the Netherlands is funny. Another Dutch YT creator I follow, Posy, had a video about it too (I guess the small ones are banned, but all the big ones are still legal for some reason?). Anyway, can't wait to see what these watches you got coming to the channel are! The one you picked up at the fair, guessing it may be an older Patek ladies piece since they can be found somewhat affordably, but I'll have to wait and see. 😁Cheers, and BTW your video work/editing has become incredible bro! 🍻
Thanks mate. Wishing you the best for 2024 🙏🏼🙏🏼 I just checked his video on the fireworks 😅😅 it’s really is backwards over here with what is legal and what is not 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️

Over here in Puerto Rico people get crazy about fireworks, I thought it was a “Latino” thing, but looks like we are all the same when it comes to celebrate 🎉
It's amazing what a bit of lube can do. I have just got a vintage Tissot tissonic tuning fork watch off ebay for fairly cheap and all that is wrong is a few of the hour wheel teeth are damaged. Have you ever worked on one of these sorts of movements it's got a nice hum to it. Cheers Horology.
Thanks for the video! I am surprised that this watch seems to be way better quality than the Aliexpress one. Expected the complete opposite to be completely honest. Also great idea with learning how to work on a watch with this cheap one. I will order one and try the surgery myself. I have managed to repair a couple of iPhones and other electronics as well as many car engines before so this will be a nice challenge. As I've said before I am not into watches at all but I am into the mechanics! We will see how it goes, probably not very well the firs time :D
Flipn sweet job my man. I am on the hunt for watch tools in my area so that i may dip my toes in the hobby. You motivate and offer good pointers. Canr wait to see the next video
I've been playing around with some of the inexpensive Amazon watches. I find the Chinese movements are generally pretty solid and not at all bad for the price.
30 sec in & i thought man o man re-fitting those pivots is gonna give you a world of pain (DG2813, based on the 8 series ) I've tackled a few of them with a 70% success rate "roughly" but they will run well ( if you don't shear of the screw heads which i have/do) , in fact i bought that same watch years back for £14 . Nice result👍
Awesome video as usual, looking forward to see what's coming in the new year! Say, to me it looked like the cog that belonged below that lefty screw was loose after the screw was tightened, is it just me? Also, I actually find this watch has a very nice dial, and clean layout. Incredible what 32 dollars can buy from China!
I like watches, but not the investment type watch basic seikos, bulova, citizen eco and the like, have about 15 I wear randomly, and some going back 20 years, I just like mixing and matching for the ocassion, somewhere I still have the swatch jelly fish watch ❤. Also have the tuning fork watch that still work ❤
I love comparing the internals of an $800 watch with an ultra cheap watch. I'd also love to compare them to an A. Lange & Söhne but I don't think we're ever going to see that!
@@HorologyBiologyKind of a half-kidding comment, but it would definitely be fascinating to see the insides of a watch that goes for a quarter-million or more. I'm happy with your content!
Oh, my goodness, mate, I just watched someone else's video working on a vintage watch I would absolutely loved to have gotten, and it was just one puckering, "OMG WTF" moment after another! So painful to watch 😬not fresh!! 🙈 Sorry, just had to vent 😂 Can't wait for your upcoming top-maker feature to restore my faith in the hobby! 😎
@@HorologyBiology 😂 you know how it is. We don't call people out loud by name and bring shame 🤣 🙈 Gives me a neat idea, though. I think too many people don't get enough quality practice before diving in to valuable pieces. Maybe it would be good for someone to take a few of these cheap movements and do full revisions, like a maker. Polish all the screws, finish the visible surfaces, tighten up the finish on the case, etc, and practice what it takes to create some of those finishes. Then taking extra steps to protect them will just come naturally, since it's time and sweat invested. 🤷♂️ Once someone has polished a few screws, they'll probably become a lot more aware of the impact of their screw driver. (Or the flats on a caseback 🙈)
It seems like a DG2813 movement, which is a clone of the Miyota 8215. Not 100% clone but very close. This automatic movement commonly appeared in many low end chinese watches especially replica watches. You can actually but these cheap movement for like 10 to 15 US dollars. They CAN be reliable, but they are a gamble, hit or miss. Some says it won't last longer than 6 months, some says it lasted for years and years, 5 or more.
Greetings. Working on Chinese watches is hard and risky because of low grade material , though this one look a bit acceptable. This movement is almost the copy of the Citizen 8200. Great job. Cheers 🍺🍺🍺
I have been checking out some Invicta watches online. Some of them look pretty good. I see that people either love or hate them. Their specs look very good for the price, especially the Pro Diver autos. I would appreciate any feedback about Invicta from folks that own or have owned one.👍🤜🤛
I think ive seen a very similar movement being worked on and it was stated that it was a seiko clone. Which explains the "s" at the start of the movement number
Looks like a good movement to play with. Not a real attractive watch, but nothing a dial change wouldn't fix. I might get one but I'll wait until I feel like opening one more account... Temu, ick.
I would have been interested to see the metal shavings in the bottom of your cleaner. I could see some when you opened this up. I also noticed that the "crystal" came pre-scratched. Nice bonus. Everything looked bone dry, including the balance stones. Made my scalp crawl to see the inside of that barrel with not even a thin film of lube. I was wondering why you didn't use any lubeta on the reversing wheel.
Oh I wouldn’t know for sure. Most things were only purchased when required. I do have a video on my channel where I show all the things I’m working with
Hey, how do mechanical watches know when it's the end of the month? Like how does it know if it 30 or 31 days or like February. Do you just have to set it a specific way at first or do you just have to fix it at the end of every month
I have about 20 watches (they're not some top tier, actually the best one is Casio Edifice 😅) and only one of them is automatic... and I can't find it 😢
@@HorologyBiology bro, I've search everywhere! I've even had one move since I lost it. And there is no chance that someone stole it from me. It just vanished. 😆
Good question. For me it would be down to the quality of the build and of course the quality and condition of the gaskets. You cannot change the build quality so that is what it is. They state for this watch it will hold 3ATM but i'm skeptical at that.
It's incredible what you can get from China for a few dollars. And at the same time it becomes clear that there is absolutely no justification for other watches costing thousands of dollars.
Thanks for watching. Although that doesn't make sense what you said. That's like saying a Ford Fiesta and a Ferrari should cost the same as they are both cars and do the same thing.
@@HorologyBiology It makes sense and you know it too. A Rolex for 10,000 dollars has a material value of less than 10 dollars. Rolex produces around 1 million watches a year with fewer than 10,000 employees. On average, this works out to 17 hours per clock. Now you can calculate for yourself how much it costs Rolex to produce a watch. Even at $100 per hour worked around $1700. By the way: You can get good automatic watches with sapphire crystal for €100. So only one hundredth of a Rolex. A Ford Fiesta costs $20,000. So a Ferrari would have to cost $2 million for your comparison to be correct.
@@avronaut I think your math is a way off to be honest but I do see what you are saying. On the flip side you can say this about most high street retailers (look at Nike sneakers for example) or even supermarkets prices, do you avoid these products too?
@@avronautThe estimated *total* labour to make a Rolex is just over two hours. The sales margins, marketing costs and taxes are at least 90% of the price. It is estimated at if Rolex moved production to China they could make their steel watches for only *$60* due to far lower labour costs.

Thanks for that and thanks for watching 👍🏽👍🏽
Will an NH35a fit in there? What’s an upgraded movement that will fit? Something inexpensive…. Beginner
@@dagobaker probably not, usually only the movement from the same family are compatible.
Greetings. Working on Chinese watches is hard and risky because of low grade material , though this one look a bit acceptable. This movement is almost the copy of the Citizen 8200. Great job. Cheers 🍺🍺🍺
Thanks for sharing the movement info, I knew someone would have an idea 👍🏼 Thanks for watching
Happy new year Matt, nice vid I would probably buy that watch I’m not fussy
Happy new year Bertie. You are my most fussiest subscriber 😅😅
@@HorologyBiology thanks for the compliment, I think lol
Very well done. Thanks for the video
Thanks Darryll, wishing you a happy new year and all the best for 2024
Oh, and looking forward to the (RM? Patek? AP?) video!! Stay cool, stay fresh, keep being you! ⌚️⏱🙌
hahha maybe I have over hyped it too much now seeing the names you have listed lolol
Great job.
Thanks for watching
I was so happy to receive mine a few years ago. Sadly it wouldn't run reliability. Stopping several times a day even though fully wound.
Bummer.
I've bought a watch with the Chinese Standard movement in it 5 years ago for $10, and this one runs fine, but it's really hard to wind the watch.
Excellent. Thank you. Temu is not available online.
Thanks for watching. The link works for me. I can check again.
It works for me
Another great video. Thank you. 😃👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Jeweled center wheel watch for 40 bucks. Can't go wrong :P
I was pleasantly surprised seeing that. Not expected at all!
Ty very informative well done as usual
Thank you Robert 👍
I have been checking out some Invicta watches online. Some of them look pretty good. I see that people either love or hate them. Their specs look very good for the price, especially the Pro Diver autos.
I would appreciate any feedback about Invicta from folks that own or have owned one.👍🤜🤛
I’m sure others all of their opinions to share. Personally I’m not a fan of them
Great video and of course Channel, subscribed 👍🏼
Awesome, thank you!
Do you think cheap temu watches contain toxic chemicals? Like lead and cadmium there have been things like cheap jewellery from china has cadmium in
I don't think it's lead but not sure about cadmium. I think it's just a cheap alloy
@17m30sec. I think Seiko has used a combined winding and clutch wheel?
Could be for sure
I think ive seen a very similar movement being worked on and it was stated that it was a seiko clone.
Which explains the "s" at the start of the movement number
I Love your videos! thank you for this!
Glad you like them!
Looks like a good movement to play with. Not a real attractive watch, but nothing a dial change wouldn't fix. I might get one but I'll wait until I feel like opening one more account... Temu, ick.
Cheers for watching 👍🏻👍🏻
I would have been interested to see the metal shavings in the bottom of your cleaner. I could see some when you opened this up. I also noticed that the "crystal" came pre-scratched. Nice bonus.
Everything looked bone dry, including the balance stones. Made my scalp crawl to see the inside of that barrel with not even a thin film of lube. I was wondering why you didn't use any lubeta on the reversing wheel.
Thanks for watching, yes that barrel was so clean you could eat off it 😆
Amazing but yet it is machine made so it does have some precision. I'm shocked the jewels are not plastic but..... Actual synthetic rubis? Doubt it.
Yeah I was very surprised at the quality of the jewels. They really looked like most standard type
The movement looks like a Mingzu/Dixmont DG2813.
I bought it now for $32. I want to know whether it is still working after a year now, and how long it will remain working after resting ?
Thanks
This is extraordinary! How can you make a watch that is mechanical and reliable at that price!
Maybe by not adding oil 😅
Well i wouldn‘t go as far as calling it reliable , even after Service 😅 it still is a cheap Watch. But awesome amplitude 🥳
@@skunkymule6993 Maybe he can do an update over a few months and see how it does. Should be interesting!
That rotor is very miyota 8000-series like, maybe it's a clone of that?
I’m really not sure but a few people have said similar
I wonder if you can tell us how much your equipment costs? Just ballpark it for us.
Oh I wouldn’t know for sure. Most things were only purchased when required. I do have a video on my channel where I show all the things I’m working with
Your videos are awesome l have a brand new fake batman rolex how much would you charge to clean and oil it i,ve never worn it thanks for your response
Thanks for watching. Have to decline touching fake watches sorry 👍🏻
I like the dial. And I am not even a big fan of green in general.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻👍🏻
I don't wear a watch, I don't own a watch, I don't repair watches but I enjoyed the video ☺
😅😅 Thanks for watching 👍
Same here. These video's are the best and of course super fresh
I'm surprised that it has any jewels at all! For $32.00 I'd expect about 3 plastic gears that make the hands move when you turn the crown.😅
😅 Thanks for watching 👍
It reminds me of the Timex Expedition North Automatic. In design at least.
Thanks for watching
fireworks all the time is not a dutch thing, it is a last 4, 5 years thing everywhere.
Harsh to know :(
Looked filthy inside for a new watch. The hair was special.
Haha I see notice the little hair. Quality control is not on the agenda I assume
This movement has more jewels than a $1000 Seiko lol!
Thats a bit of a reach lol
Hey, how do mechanical watches know when it's the end of the month? Like how does it know if it 30 or 31 days or like February. Do you just have to set it a specific way at first or do you just have to fix it at the end of every month
Thanks for watching. You will have to correct it manually on the vast majority of all mechanical watches.
I have one watch that I bought online but is not working.I do not know why.Can you help me by fixing it and tell me how much will be?
Email in the about section, thanks for watching 👍🏻
I have about 20 watches (they're not some top tier, actually the best one is Casio Edifice 😅) and only one of them is automatic... and I can't find it 😢
You need to go hunting for that auto Jerry !!!
@@HorologyBiology bro, I've search everywhere! I've even had one move since I lost it. And there is no chance that someone stole it from me. It just vanished. 😆
@@Man_In_Black_and_White Damn those mystical vanishing watches pffff.
Is there anything that can be done in a service to improve the water resistance of a cheap watch that's not very water resistant?
Good question. For me it would be down to the quality of the build and of course the quality and condition of the gaskets. You cannot change the build quality so that is what it is. They state for this watch it will hold 3ATM but i'm skeptical at that.
So what are the results post-regulation?
+2secs a day. It barely needed anything doing as the results were very solid before even the oils had settled. Thanks for watching.
@@HorologyBiology cool, thanks for the video, they may raise the price now 🥲
Takk!
Thanks as always Francis. Much appreciated
I don't buy this watch just because I can't pronounce the name, if the dial were sterile I would buy several different colors
😅
Try a Winner watch 😎
👍🏽👍🏽
@@HorologyBiologyPerhaps if you try a Winner watch you could try the Winner 111?
Biggest problem is that works in this video cost some times more expensive that watch itself
Maybe they are selling them so cheap because they don’t have to put oil in them.
It would take a lot more effort for sure
@@mrbrisvegas2and that would make them worthless. Whole point of nice watch is them working great.
Ah, another watch I can afford. 😄
😅😅
Is the restoration watch a cartier?
Not exactly 🥲
Awww...as a super expensive small watch, I thought that it was a cartier. Let's see what you actually got! It still exciting!
With a different dial or at least the "logo" removed that watch wouldn't look too horrible
It’s an is what it is watch 👍🏻👍🏻
At least it's not deceiving anyone
