yes...better than the eq that has become so popular. you can actually hear this siren. i think LA county still uses these on engines. or perhaps a newer version that doesnt sound synthetic.
The A refers to not having a brake installed, the brake was an option, if it was supplied with a brake, it was a Q2B. The major changes over the years were in the clutch assembly and the motor. Newer Q's have front grills that have perforated metal covering the center where the F logo is. The older grills are open as mine is.
This siren is 12 volts, the Q was introduced in the early 1950's and it was available in 6 volts because a lot of vehicles still had 6 volt electrical systems. I have a 1963 Federal catalog and you could still get a 6 volt or 12 volt model at that time.
The new Q's use a one way bearing for the clutch and I have noticed on TH-cam fire apparatus videos that many of them have a short coast time. My Q's have the simple ball & ramp clutch and I know both of them are over 40 years old and had the heck run out of them and the clutches still work great. I guess it was a cost saving to replace the ball & ramp clutch with a screw clutch and then the current one way bearing. It also helps to have a well broken in rotor bearing for long coast times.
Kids, this is what we had back in the day... back before they started putting brakes on them. You see, this was back when men were men. Marlboro Reds were the only filtered air that we needed at a fire. The siren would still be coasting as we were loading hose back on the truck after a Great All-Nighter! The music of an old Q mixed with a couple of Grovers and a straight-piped Detroit sounded like a symphony coming down the road. Actually, it was a masterpiece!
Thank you very much for that information. It is interesting how much the sound had changed over the years, unless the current models just have to be "broken in" first? They've lost the characteristic growl to some degree and coast down much faster. Thanks again!
No you're mixing it with the Q2B which has a build up before going down, it's like a Q wail siren, this one is a Q2A and is a manual Q siren. I prefer the Q2A over anything else because it allows you to control how load the siren is depending on the traffic and the speed you're going, unlike the Q2B which plays automatically.
@@peacefulrevolutionist No, you are thinking about the EQ2B which is the electronic version. It sounds somewhat close to the classic Q. The EQ2 does have the ability to auto wail but not the Q which uses momentary contact switches (through a high current solenoid).
@AppleBlossom7713 The easiest place to find them is on Ebay, there are usually at least 1 listed at any given time. Expect to pay $300.00-700.00 depending on condition.
Most mechanical sirens sound output is measured in db (decibles, measure of sound pressure level). Federal claims 123 db at 10 feet from front of siren. Most electronic sirens are very directional, most of the sound is directed foward by dssign of the speaker, with a mechanical, most of the sound is from the side.
I am using some custom made 1 gauge cables 10' long to the siren to keep the voltage drop to a minimum and 2 8D batteries in parallel for a power source. The 2 8D batteries power a traffic control arrow board that we use in our business.
@robertgift I personally love the high pitch of the Q (you probablly could've guessed by my username...lol). It gives me chills when it screams at full power. I find lower pitch sirens to be less satisfying. The high pitch of the Q is not just due to the number of ports, but also the high speed of the motor. Of course, the faster it spins, the more air it pushes through the ports and the louder the siren is.
maybe its just me or maybe there actually is a pitch difference.. my department has a ladder truck with a Federal Q2A and its pitch is a lot higher than our engine that has a Federal Q2B
@Henry455 Thank you. Don't I know it! At a 02:30 heart attack scene!!!, I stupidly accidentally hit our ambulance's Q2A foot switch. Quickly I tightly sealed the front (intake) with my coato diminish the volume as much as possible. I have a working 2t22A which averages 2-1/2 minutes from 3,450 rpm to rotor stop. Last 30 seconds or so is fairy quiet. Wanted to seal the bottom intake to see how much longer windown becomes. At 5,300 ft ASL, our less dense air does not impart as much drag.
where would i be able to find something like this as a collectible or even a grover stutertone second hand off a decommissioned vehicle or is that just not possible? I can always dream right
@robertgift The Q has 14 ports and I agree the pitch is too high. My Sireno 40010 has the same dia. rotor and has 12 ports but sounds almost identical to the Q. That could be due to motor rpm's. The reason for no wind down to silence is strictly because of video file size. The slower the rotor turns, the longer it will coast if that makes sense. As the rotor slows, it is not working to move as much air so the drag becomes less and less. Watch the first part of my video "Old Q2 Rebuilt".
Do not want to get involved in any dispute but I do like to keep facts straight on my channel. Federal Q2b MSRP, $2,374.00, B&M SC, $2,133.00. SC weighs 27 lbs., My Q weighs 33 lbs.
how much does somthing like that go for? im asking because ive re done my whole basement with fire fighting equipment, and my son and his friends always sleep over. And a tradition of mine is going down there before they get up and waking them up with an old alarm bell ive installed and it would be hilarious if this was installed to. i know its loud but still
Nice. Thanks But lets hear whole wind-down. Especially good when close near end of wind-down. I would paint the rotor's front edge half white and half black to visually show rotation. I painted one rotor vane of my Federal Signal 2t22 air raid siren (tornado siren) to show rotation better. (Also, after each monthly test, when I line that vane up in a particular stator port, the vanes of both rotors are blocking their ports, keeping out birds, bugs, snow, etc.)
@douro20 Good to know! I want to install magnaflows, flowmasters, or cherrybomb glass packs...which one would sound the best and somewhat of a low tone/grumble?
How many ports in this beautiful siren? Federal Signal made a mistake having it attain such a high pitch. Better to have HALF the number of ports so that the sound would be an octave lower and carry farther. Hey, why not wind down to silence? Did I post here before? Is there a way to knowithout searching? Thank you.
one of our engines has a Q2b and we had a bad snow storm last winter and the siren doesn't roll as long as it should anymore. what do you think is wrong with the siren?
@Seahawksfan951 That's very ignorant to say. The B&M Super Chief kills this siren. It is louder and lower pitched, but it only draws half the amps, weighs half of what the Q does, costs $1000 less than the Q and is 100% American Made.
I HATE THAT! Are you referring to the "siren brake"? Pushing a button causes a pad to be pushed against the rotor to bring it to a much quicker halt. I like it when it coasts down natually to inaudibility.
Is this a 6 volt siren? I'm looking at sirens on ebay and such and I saw a Q2a once and the seller stated it was a 6 volt siren not 12 volt like the modern sirens. Is this true for older 50-60s Qs?
+Edaan Friedman Years ago Federal made a painted model of the Q with no back cover and painted instead of chrome plated. This was a Q1, they also sold the Q without a brake, this was the A model, the optional brake was the B model. Now all Q's come standard with chrome plating and brakes.
They're too shrill and tinny sounding. I like mechanical sirens that have a low growl to them, like an 8 port Federal WL or a B&M Super Chief. I also prefer mechanical sirens on antique emergency vehicles, Qs included. Modern fire engines should have electronic sirens.
OH YEAH!! The sweet sound of a Q....
A REAL Fire Truck Siren
yes...better than the eq that has become so popular. you can actually hear this siren. i think LA county still uses these on engines. or perhaps a newer version that doesnt sound synthetic.
Sounds like angels coming to the rescue to me!
Why?!

Awesome! I love the wind down!! The Q is such a beautiful sound!
Next time I run a fire call in my truck I'm playing this over the PA
Be immensely cheaper.
Alex Neumeister nice picture!
I wish I could. We're only allowed blue courtesy lights
the power it take to run that it would drain ur battery
Jason Powell it's not a real Q. Playing the recording over the PA.
That is my favorite siren. In the mornings when we start the trucks up and check the lights and siren I look forward to hear that one
123 db's that are music to my ears.
Gotta LOVE a Q! Strikes fear in the hearts of men.
the sound of this thing growling is just....beautiful
Love those old Federal sirens
All the firetrucks where I live have Q2B's. Never seen a 2QA before. :)
Caroline Cunningham This model does not have a brake. The Q2B does. The brake helps stop the siren when the truck arrives at the scene.
Caroline didn't say it had a brake...
wow that just ran chills down my spine, very nice haha

Just need the guy laying on the horn
45barber1 EXACTLY THATS THE BEST PART
Earlier models of the Q were available without a brake (Q2A). The model with a brake was a Q2B. They are only available now with a brake.
@PNSB101 I have a brake for this one but did not install it. You can add brakes to A series sirens if you wanted to.
The best sounding, and most effective, siren known to man 😁👌👌👌👌👏👏👏👏👏

i like this video nice high pitch sound great video henry455
I would like some info on where I can purchase one of those please
i like the tone on this one. looks snazzy too
You can get them on Ebay. They go for alot, like around $300-$700.
Music to my ears

This sound makes it official. Some bad shit is goin' down.
Ohh my god !! I love it !!
Can you make a video of the Q2BS thats the one we got on our ladder at my station
maybe its just me or maybe there actually is a pitch difference.. my department has a ladder truck with a Federal Q2A and its pitch is a lot higher than our engine that has a Federal Q2B

wheres the powercall?????
No, the A model came without a brake, the B model had a brake installed. All new Q's come with a brake as standard.
can i get just the audio to that??? that would be sweet...
Q2B has a electrically operated brake to stop the siren from coasting.
We have a Q2A that does not rev as fast as this one. Thinking ours needs some cleaning and lube.
@robertgift The Q has 14 ports and I agree the pitch is too high. My Sireno 40010 has the same dia. rotor and has 12 ports but sounds almost identical to the Q. That could be due to motor rpm's. Q2A was delivered with no brake, the Q2B model has a brake installed.
I also rescued riley McMurray with that loudest fire engine siren in the 1969 tv show called sesame street
Very nice siren!
Do not want to get involved in any dispute but I do like to keep facts straight on my channel. Federal Q2b MSRP, $2,374.00, B&M SC, $2,133.00. SC weighs 27 lbs., My Q weighs 33 lbs.
That would be the Federal Signal company, the same people who invented the Thunderbolts and Federal 2001 air raid siren.
Sounds just like a fire truck

Does the B stand for brake, that is what I always thought.
mind if i use this for a report on the old q vs the new q and driver responce?
GUYS I AM MAKING A SYNTHESIZED Q SIREN WITH THE BREAK ON IT SHOULD BE UP BY THIS WEEKEND. NOTE TO YOU HENRY, PLEASE LISTEN TO IT. THANKS
Ebay, there is at least one listed now.
This is one of the sounds used in the Photon Sirens mod in Garrys Mod!
@douro20
Good to know! I want to install magnaflows, flowmasters, or cherrybomb glass packs...which one would sound the best and somewhat of a low tone/grumble?
@sandrochatlos1
A Q in a Crown Vic? You'll need a bigger alternator for that...and a second battery.
1:00-2:03 fav part love the slow shut down
How many ports in this beautiful siren?
Federal Signal made a mistake having it attain such a high pitch.

I just install mine in my 52 Chevy deluxe. There goes the neighborhood lol😢😮😊

Pullin' up to the scene, jumpin' off, pulling hose, masking up...getting ready to go to work...
Do you have one like that one for sale or where you bought that one. I'm looking for that same one, but can't seem to find one.
How long will it stay good when running on full power
Sure, no problem.
I could go for some Q action right now. Haven't been on a call in a couple months
Just got back from a medical call
We run a brush truck for medical calls with covid
I could also use some Q in my life right now
@@demonwaker22 my daily work ambulance is a type 2 mercedes sprinter lol. trust me i know the struggle.
there is no doubt that im putting one of these on my car when i get one.
Wish our fire apparatæ Q sirens had 1/3rd the ports.
Lower frequencies penetrate vehicles better and carry farther.
exactly how loud are these sirens? can they be measured in watts, and if so, how many watts?
nice vid
They can reach up to 140 decibels.

How do you have so many sirens?
Also I'm getting a model 28 is 300 bucks a good deal?
+Edaan Friedman About one of the best you'll find really.
I got a C5 for $165 and a 76A for $450.
The C5 is from Ebay, it works and I now sent it to B&M to get it fully restored.
The 76A is from Craigslist.

Can Someone Explain To Me The Difference Between The Q2A And The Q2B, is this the one they mount on FDNY Rigs or is It always the Q2B
That is what a q should sound like
lol that will wake up your whole area with that
how did you power this, doesn't it take 12V and 100amps?
Still the best.
That is fine that you don't like Q's but can you tell me why?
Were there substantial changes between the "A" and "B" versions?
i wont one ware did you get it from
I want this on my 1999 Crown Victoria!
is Q2A larger than a Q2B siren
I just jizzed my pants

where can you get one of theas?
Pretty much ALL of the Seminole/Orange county fire trucks have this siren
That got some attention in the house. lol
How to perchase thish system
User,"MrLepg" stole your video with well over a million views clocked. Just in case you don't know.
I saw that too
were can i get a Q siren?
I might get a Federal Q for Christmas. I will tell you in a few days!
I didn't get it :(

now that sounds like a firetruck! not the new eletronic multi sound.
This siren is on some of my firetrucks on roblox
