    This reminded me of a 12 inch gun bunker in downtown Honolulu when the military was trying to destroy it with a wrecking ball and they had to give up because the bunker was designed to take multiple navel shells also after Pearl Harbor the 12 inch gun was fired and it shattered all of the windows in the Royal Hawaiian

  • @aserta

    First they built the flak cannon box. It's clear by the way the inside and what little is visible of the outside walls that it was built with a lot more care. Then, they added the meter thick water defense, it's quite clear from the rough nature that it was built in a hurry, boards slapped together haphazardly to form the concrete mold, the rebar reinforcement pokes out as well, they did not care for it to last (for those that don't know, for concrete to be reinforced, in name and function, there can't be any exposed steel from inside it. If there is, it will rust, slowly over time and it will cause it to swell and destroy the structure, or weaken it).
    Pretty interesting setting, in that it gives away its time line so easily, usually, when structures such as these are built and reinforced, it's difficult because of their great engineering skills.

    • @RaoulThomas007
      @RaoulThomas007 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      aserta Did they know that about rebar in the forties? They only had about 24 to 18 months for the entire wall. Interestingly they had over 60 standardized plans for the bunkers which could be modified. They seemed to have lasted a very long time.

    I love your video's, I would be doing that myself if I was still there. I spent 2 years in Nurnberg at Merril Barracks ( the old SS Barracks). I saw everything I could while I was there. One thing though, give us a little more of the horizon in some shots. Sometimes it's a lot of looking down and it's hard to see the larger picture. I realize though you may be protecting some locations. Just a little more out, less down sometimes. But hey, great I will continue watching.

  • @ferryengr
    @ferryengr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some, or most, of the metal wires and rods you point out that are coming out of the concrete appear to be "form ties". That is, metal straps that "ties" one side of the concrete form to the other while the concrete sets in between the boards. It is very common to leave the metal form ties in place after the wood forms are removed. The concrete is extremely heavy when wet and pushes outward on the wood forms with enormous force - until the concrete sets. The metal ties hold the forms together until the concrete sets and are then cut or released to allow the wood boards making up the concrete forms to be removed.

    Wonder why they didn’t build cooling tubs in all the flak positions? These bunkers can be so much alike but also so different. You go in expecting it to be a certain way and boom they added a surprise room or entrance. All these bunker locations were well thought out. The only problem was, the Germans had no way to determine where the Allies would attack.

    Brilliant video nice to see a unique bunker set incorporated into the caves instead of just concrete bunkers! My thoughts are what was this whole thing used for? To me it looks like the bunker was designed so the gun could also fire down the beaches? Also it looks like there is room for a couple of machine gun nests behind the walls of rocks to cover the gun. Was the gun there to protect the caves or was the whole thing there to protect something bigger? On the Atlantic wall you see gun positions like this a lot and almost always have extra thing defending it but the caves and tunnels seem like a lot to just server one gun position so maybe it was some sort of command post? One other strange thing is that AA guns are best on high ground to get a 360 degree view of aircraft but this one seems to be half way down a hill/cliff side so would only have about 180 degree field of fire but then again it could be incorporated with other AA guns with inter locking arcs.

    Another fantastic location. So much to see. That bunker with the two entrances was huge. I can imagine this location being shelled or bombed and the troops running into the bunker and when it’s over, they come running out to their defensive positions. Yes I did enjoy it.
