I totally agree Tommy! Have been riding a Katipo myself for 2 years now. Canged the oil in the Pinion once and had zero issues with pinion/belt or anything.
There is guy on TH-cam called cyclingabout and he is using belt. He rides hybrid bike for thousands of miles a year. On MTB belt will last a lifetime of the bike.
@@tommychype I see a lot of advantages for the pinion system. e.g. with Enduro and DH in connection with weight distribution on the bike and the unsprung mass at the rear.. The fact that a number of bike brands would not want to participate is another topic. Money and commercial considerations play a role. The moral of the story...if they (Öhlins) can develop an electronic damper for Loïc Bruni within 2 seasons, Pinion should be successful in developing a pro electronic gear system..
I have been on a Pinion for three years. The grip shift version predating electric. Oil change is easy. 4000 miles, still on the same chain / sprockets - perfect alignment, no side loading, less wear. Has easily paid for itself. My 12 speed is 600% range, great but I do notice the jump in gear spacing.
Ill use chain system. People say pinion is better because less service. Well i had about 2000 km over 3 years ln my trek slash and i had 0 dollar service on the bike. Literally oiled every now and then which costs pretty much nothing. People just wank pinion as if chains are literally breaking every 5.mins. I ride mainly enduro/downhill on my slash and had 0 chain problems. Only service ive done on slash is the suspension and cleaned breaks. Has absolutely no problems with shifting. My derailer despite smashing etc is new as ever. Not to mention new transmission systems are extremely durable. Gearboxes do have their place on market. But jesus is it wanked. The chain system is still the reliable and tested option.
If you're mostly going down the float is beneficial but if you're playing mountain goat all day it's a hell of a downer. I'd still want to try one long term...
I have done some big days on this bike not noticed any downsides yet had 6months riding one of these taking it to the alps soon so that will be interesting
Yeah Pinion type belt systems should be the future, been a supporter of this system for a few years but not able to afford new bike. As was hinted Shimano and Sram have a stranglehold on rear derailleur technonlogy which is now over a hundred years old...well past time to move on.
Do you need to index the gears? Honestly, nothing plays up on my bike as much as the gears. Not having them crunching and skipping as much would be a massive plus!
@@samwise833 cheers buddy, so i have found out the oil change needs doing once a year or every 10,000km and you can buy the service kit for £29.99 and theres a tutorial how to do it online easy as that 👍
Those Gates belts are almost indestructible - same thing that drives your car engine accessories (air con, power steering hydraulics etc) for hundreds of thousands of miles next to a hot engine without breaking. Fk big Derailleur! Down with the Drivetrain Industrial Complex!
Considering the Wps tune for my rockshox coil myself. Might have to save some pennies!. Do you know what the plan is for your fox 38? I recently put a Smashpot coil conversion in mine and it feels quality. (a bit heavier mind).
I would definitely recommend the conversion for the shock, plan for the 38s is to put a different shim stack i think to allow the oil to move more freely i think dint quote me on it 😂
Just because they say gearbox is more reliable means nothing. Chain system is aswell. What market share do theh have? Non existant. Lets see them have milions of bikes sold and you will see the reported problems pile up. Chain system is tested and reliable option period.
@@tommychype that’s less than I thought it would be. They look mint and was shocked how quick Lewis went on it, on his 2nd ride. Suspension looks like it’s tracks the ground well. Cheers
People say many things…..c’mon this is better than derailleurs in all ways. Pinion is the future, asap Zerode create one electric I’ll be in the first line to buy one.

Amazing to hear dude im looking forward to years of no hassle 😂😂

Just got me Priority 600 HXT. It is still in the shop for assembly. Can't wait to start riding it.
The main stuff that pinion needs to improve is the electronics..don't mind the engagement points, the O-Chain does the same (only enduro/DH use).
Yeah i get ya there, i think it will definitely improve now the first generation is out

Yeah Tommy amen to the weather it does definitely suck Even though we would Moan about The heat I wish the UK would have at least one month of 30°
love those gearboxes
Thank you for an honest review, bruv. New camera and mic setup is bloody mint, innit?
Cheers for the comment bro 🙌
Glad you did this review. Have rode a pinion. was impressed.
Cheers mate yeah they are awesome systems
I really want the Taniwha as I prefer a 27.5. Just saving up!!!!
The taniwha is a great choice mate 👍
How does it climb ?

reckon you will get a chance to test a Pinion MGU?

I k ow the gear boxes don't need servicing often, but when they do is it expensive?
Im not entirely sure you know i will comment back when i find out cheers for watching 🫡
@tommychype nice one mate, keep putting out banging content and I'll keep watching

Great looking steed youth and I love the belt too yes expensive to repair but hey ho haha Keep um’ coming dude 👍 📹
Thanks matey! The belt bikes are amazing i think if it failed it would be covered under pinion warranty anyways
@@tommychype just buy the same belt from your local car parts motor factor, probably only £20 or not much more.
The belt will last 30,000 km, so gonna last longer than a year.
Cheers for the info mate ✊
My next bike will definitely be one with the belt and a gearbox
Like i said in the video if i had the choice all my bikes would have a belt system
@@tommychype The pros definitely over weigh the cons

Belt drive is tried and tested on your car mate. What do you think drives your air con for hundreds of thousands of miles without breaking?
Ps how easy is it to adjust the belt if/when it stretches out over time
Hi mate due to the belt being carbon composite is doesn’t stretch the lifespan is also quoted at upwards of 19,00 miles 😳😂
Hey mate, when the belt snaps do you need to take the frame apart to fit a new one ?
No. The slack in the belt is taken up by the tensioner underneath. Pull the tensioner away, slide the belt on, put the tensioner back.
My on my Ti Sonder hardtail, yes it has a split seat stay on the drive side for a belt but I have been running a chain.
Is it heavy to pedal in the harder gears?
Not sure what you mean, hard to pedal?
@@tommychype yeh like harder than a normal setup
What weight is it?
My build weighs just over 16kg
@@tommychype that’s less than I thought it would be. They look mint and was shocked how quick Lewis went on it, on his 2nd ride. Suspension looks like it’s tracks the ground well. Cheers
the gearbox weight varies between 1.9kg and 2,7kg, depending on how many gears and how wide the gear range
Are you sponsored by them or did you buy the bike?
sponsored, as far as i know
Yeah im sponsored by zerode hence why i tried to give an unbiased review on it
People say many things…..c’mon this is better than derailleurs in all ways. Pinion is the future, asap Zerode create one electric I’ll be in the first line to buy one.
I know mate everyones got an opinion 😂 been riding it for 6 months now been faultless, the ebike will be a gamechanger
Nice little filler vid. Would love one of them on my ebike but that's a long way off in terms of value.
Yeah i reckon in next few years if it catches on more brands will hopefully embrace it
