1. This music felt very chaotic
2. In my readings, basswood isn't very dense and it's a soft wood. Putting hot liquids in it can absorb into the wood. One guy even had the hot tea push out the almond oil he used to treat it with. Go with more traditional woods like Birch or Birch Burls(if you can get any).
Interesting idea about the basswood 🤔. Birch wood is widely used for making furniture, and is stronger and more durable than Pine or Oak. However, one of the best wood for beginners, it's basswood cause birch is not the easiest wood to whittle.

It is a really great gouge! I use mine for quickly roughing out spoon bowls, makes short work of it for sure.

Would it be possible to use a mora spoon knife instead of a curved gouge for this?

Thank you for your question. Food safe are only natural oils as linseed, coconut or sunflower oil.
Spoon butter (beeswax, and grape seed oil)
You can also use Food Safe Mineral Oil.
Did you use a band saw to get the original shape of the wood to start? Or did you buy the block in that shape?

Would it be possible to substitute the gouge with a hook instead? Or is there specific uses the gouge fulfills that a hook can't achieve, I'm trying to work on a budget to try this out as a new hobby and don't have a lot of money to play around with.
Thanks for your question. A hook knife for cutting spoons is made specifically to cut out spoons, bowls, Kuksa or a rounded edge to add some detail to your whittling project. As for the gouge, it's designed for cutting deep recesses and for hollowing out bowls and spoons. The woodcarving tool is particularly useful for cutting ornamentation, radials, and rounded surfaces.

Relaxing video. What tipe of wood you recomend to use? In my home town have dificulti to get diferent cain of wood.
I'm pretty sure they use basswood for most of their carvings

You need to find softwood, so it will be easier to start your first woodcarving project. And we use basswood cos it's softwood and it's the best choice for beginner woodcarver

Unfortunately, we don't sell wood for kuksa. In our videos we use basswood cos it's softwood, so it's the best wood for beginners. You can try to find wood in your local store. As for the size, our wood blank has the following dimensions:

It’s the same tape. In hospitals and such it’s called coban or coband
Can i burn out the bowl to start if i Dont have gouge chisel tools
It's better to use a whittling knife instead of burning out the bowl
Does basswood make for good kuksa?
Basswood is good for carving; it's a soft wood that's easy to cut. If it's treated with oil properly, it can be used, but most often, for high-quality kuksa cups, more beautiful wood types are used. For example, craftsmen make their kuksa cups from burls, which are growths on trees with very beautiful textures. Or they simply use attractive wood types like walnut.
It’s probably been asked before but can I ask what wood this is. I’ve just started carving and have carved two Kuksa (one failed and cracked) I’ve been using Ash but it’s very difficult to carve. Thanks, Ant 👍
I am not sure what wood is used here. Birch is traditionally used.

You might want to carve green as it is much easier. Birch is traditional using a quarter section. Rough it out, to include the cup interior. Keep the thickness of the cup walls consistent and not too thick -- learning from my mistakes too. Set it aside for a couple of weeks to very slowly dry to minimize splitting. Then go back and do final details and smoothing as the wood will be dryer and more difficult to carve. Or, you can just use basswood or linden as it is typically without defects and one of the best for carving. Best of luck!

It's a blue safety tape. Unfortunately, we don't sell it but you can find it on the Internet.

You're right. The kuksa blank was cut with a band saw and after that, we use hand tools to carve a kuksa

No, you don't miss anything. We just take a template for the kuksa.

Andrew, if you _do_ want metric simply multiply 4.7" x 2.5 - there are 25 millimetres in an inch.
