  • Aglaonemas are one of our favorite, and most popular houseplants but how much do you know about this wonderful genus? In Genera Specific, our goal is to dive deep into some of our most interesting genera (that's the plural of genus) and show where they came from, some stand out varieties, and how to help them thrive in your home!
Aglaonemas make for excellent indoor plants as they tolerate low light and thrive in medium and bright conditions. Most Aglaonema varieties hold up well if you forget to water, and don't need high humidity to thrive.
Despite these attributes that make Aglaonema one of the best houseplants, it's a somewhat under-appreciated group. So we're pulling back the curtain on Aglaonema, sharing its background, some of the most common varieties, and care tips so you can successfully grow Aglaonema in your home.

As a wholesale grower, we ship plants as your local retailers put in orders from us. Keep an eye out for fresh orders at your favorite local plant shop: www.costafarms.com/retailers

I appreciate the many green varieties already out. But could we get new gold, reds, semi white, neon colors, etc

We have lots of fun varieties in our Trials --- look for more colors and variegation patterns to be released every year!

I just got a pretty red one, but why are they always in the little plastic cages when planted? I'm debating if I should replant. You can definitely well the little plastic pieces through the soil

We use those plastic net pots as a part of our propagation process to produce high-quality plants. Unfortunately, we haven't found an alternative propagation method that produces equal or greater quality plants, but our growers are looking into it. And we will phase out use of the net pots once we have a better solution.

@@CostaFarms Thank you. So it's probably best to replant?

@@mzimsosupadope: Aglaonema will grow just fine for several years in the net pots because the roots grow out and aren't constricted. But it is easier to cut away the net pots when the root system is smaller, so that's up to you when you want to tackle it. If you decide to do it sooner than later, we advise giving your plant at least a couple of weeks to acclimate after you bring it home to reduce the amount of stress it may undergo from repotting. Hope this helps!
