I took Medical Coding in 2011, If you were on here then and I would have chanced upon these videos, I would not have attended to college. I told my teacher that all this reading is not helping us to learn. We need to have samples of the real situations so we can code the way they do in the hospital setting for a job. She didn't get it at first, but now she is showing them samples at the college.....You are the bomb

I am a pharmacy tech about to start the AAPC CPC training program and just recently subscribed to your channel. What path did you take to become a coder & how quickly were you able to switch over to OB/GYN specialty?

    • @ShamyraC

I actually have a separate video explaining my journey to medical coding. I’ll link it in case you’re interested. I became a Coder in 2016 and switched to OB in 2020. That was the first time my job had an open OB position available and I got it.
Definitely check out my video below for more details on my journey. I’ve gotten a lot of good feedback on how inspiring it is.

Hi Rahul! Switching to a different career is up to you. I don’t feel comfortable telling you what you should do. ☺️ If you’re thinking about getting your CPC I would work towards that but try and get my foot in the door with the company first while I study for the CPC. I a lot of people have the certification but their having a hard time getting the coding job due to no experience. Unfortunately, you may have to work your way to that coding job like I did. Good luck to you 🤗

    • @ShamyraC

Yes! That is possible. You may have to obtain your CPC certification before you land your coding job. However, some employers can have an option for you to obtain your certification in a certain timeframe. Meaning they’ll hire you but you’ll have 6 months to pass the test in order to keep your job. You would have to check the requirements on the job application to find out. 😉🤗

And I’m scared that when it’s time to take the test at the end to get certified, I’m gonna bomb big time 😥 but also, do you usually have to work in the building first before you can go home? Or can I just go straight to work from home? • @ShamyraC
      @ShamyraC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would study and make sure you’re familiar with how to look up what the provider did from the index and then from there choosing the right code based on the CPT code description. There’s a lot of information in the CPT Code book and reading the guidelines in the beginning of each chapter is very important! There’s also modifiers in the CPT book that you want to get familiar with and when it’s appropriate to use them.
I can’t just pinpoint one area in the CPT Book for you to concentrate on because you’re being tested pretty much from the beginning of the book all the way to the back.

That is correct! If the excised diameter is 9 cm then the repair to close it would be 9 cm.

This was great! Thank you so much. I followed along and came up with the same answers which is very encouraging. Two questions:
    1. How did you know how to sequence the last Op notes CPT codes? I thought the layered closure w/debridement would have been first. I'm still struggling with sequencing.
    2. Do you go through your CPT/ICD 10 books every year and re-highlight/notate the sections? I have done so much to my books already! You said in another vid your books are like your diary and that is a very fair analogy LOL.

Yay!!! I like when you guys follow along because it's easy to watch me do it but I feel like you'll learn better when you actually go through it on your own and compare.
      1. In the real coding world I would have sequenced it with the intermediate repair first because that has the higher RVUs but the practice exam listed it this way. On your CPC exam they don't expect you to know RVU amounts so just pick the answer that has the same codes as you. Now, if they have two answers with the same codes you have but sequenced different choose the answer that has the more complicated repair code first.
      2. I do!! It takes me about 2 days to complete because I'll spend about half of my work day transferring notes and the other half working. LOL! My books are my babies!!! I could not imagine having to start fresh in a blank book... ugh I'm getting anxious just thinking about it!! LOL!

@@ShamyraC I can't imagine what it is going to be like moving my notes over to a new book but I'm glad to know others think it's a smart thing to do too. I enjoy how relatable you are and your testimony of how you became a coder. Thank you! New subbie just for that.

@@Awakenthemasses2016_thetruth Yes, especially if you're a new coder you want to have all the help you can get in coding books. I'd say once you're coding for a specific specialty then you don't have to add so much to your book. For example if you become an ortho coder you probably won't need a bunch notes in cardiovascular section.
      Aw, Thank you!

@@ShamyraC One more question if you don't mind. How long did you take for prep before you knew you were ready to take the exam?

    • @ShamyraC

@@Awakenthemasses2016_thetruth ummm…. My first time I definitely wasn’t prepared I think I only studied for about 3 months and I did not have any of the resources that I share with you guys. I think I just had 2 practice exams 150 questions each that I kept practicing with over and over. I tried the strategy looking up the answers given rather than “coding” and looking in my index to guide me. That was a fail and I ended up failing by 5%.
That was a bummer but also made me realize that I almost passed it ALL ON MY OWN.. I think I studied for another month and half and took my second attempt.. The only reason I waited a month and half was because that’s when the next exam was in my city. I wanted to take it ASAP because I only missed it by a few questions. I didn’t really do anything different though I was still ONLY doing practice exams but the AAPC gave me practice exams (to purchase) focusing on the CPT Code series I struggled the most in.
To be honest I wasn’t worried about taking any courses because in my mind all I needed was the certificate. So, doing practice exams over and over to me was going to help me pass it and it did. My second time I did feel more confidant and I didn’t run out of time!! I was young at the time too I think 21 and at that age it’s easier for us to take risks.. Me now would not take an exam based off of two practice exams I’ve studied lol I had no instructor. No one guided me through. Nothing! So, I’m glad I can help all of you because this is something I would’ve loved to have! 💗
