14 years later and still haven't heard a more lyrically gifted rapper than jehst
ESP still blows my mind

Rhyme asylum are a different breed
*Jam baxter enters the chat.
The return of the drifter album literally blew my mind. At the time us hip hop was going through a bling era which made it even more refreshing
Jehst is hip hop. A true legend.
A wordsmith of the highest order. An artist that has done so much for the culture of music itself.
This dude, f*cking hell, so much props, respect from an old head in the Blue Borough
Shouts to Jehsts Barber sick fade.
Just had to check I got the H in the right place 😂☮️
lol me too when I just typed a comment, always remember that lyric! 😂 he looks well, has barely aged lol!
Legend man, my all time favourite artist.. the soundtrack to my youth and still now at 39.
Me too, same age, same favourite artist. Return of the drifter was one of the first UK hip hop albums I bought after a few years of being into the late 90s American scene. I hadn't heard of jehst before I bought it and it was like a whole new world had opened up and UK hip hop, despite being different to its American counterpart, was a real thing. Big props to harry love and other beat makers of the time and the dozen or so MC's that made the era what it was (for me at least). The rhymes and and beats were so heavy, but so relatable. What a time it was
Jam Baxter took his crown
@top5tings big shout mate but hard to argue, baxter is definitely next level
Talking about Kareem Campbell in the World Industries Videos… But you had the Zoo York Mixtape which was the New York Skate/Hip Hop with the likes of Harold Hunter who was also in the film Kids and was in Hip Hop vids like Common 1-9-9-9. Also loads of Stretch & Bobbitto Clips in the Zoo York Mixtape 👊💎🛹🎤🏆
This is why I love Jehst. He fully speaks how he feels and is so certain on how he expressed his opinion. Proper top g man.
An absolute legend in the uk hip hop scene. 🔥🔥🔥🔥 He is an iconic backpacker or more apt, High Plains Drifter and needs to be recognised for his place in uk rap history along with many others.
What awesome trip down memory lane. The subject matter of what’s discussed touches on just how much work Jehst has done for uk hiphop and the way in which he’s done it. The first track on the new album is called cornerstone and I couldn’t think of a better way to describe what he has laid down for us. Strangely enough I watched a documentary about Robin Williams yesterday and it had some of the cuts for the new album in it, which made me tear up as did the mention of champions of nature and evil Ed so many good memories of amazing people that have given so much love to their art.
Big up Jehst one of the best UK been a fan for many years and rate him up there with the likes of Taskforce, Skinny, Roots manuva and lewis parker. Was nice to hear a more extended interview thanks! loving the podcast.
Jehst is a GOAT and continues to create amazing art year on year. New album is fire. Great podcast!
Always have time for jehst and his music….R-A-W ….H-H -HERE I AM!!!!
Thank you both so much big up Kela and Jehst, they should do this once a month
The greatest to ever bless the mic
Jehst new shit sounds insane! My boy sam zircon made a nice beat for one of his tracks too 🫶
It's a solid album for sure. 'Doctor' is probably my favourite beat on there. That beat is crazy
Great to see Jehst in conversation. The emcee in Hidden Identity was Mistima. He and Evil Ed had an EP out around '94 that was rough around the edges but banged (it was hilarious, and sampled Tim Roth way before Skinny's album). It's also such a shame that CON were that close to signing a deal - it's wild to think how influential they were at the time, and yet now are a mostly forgotten footnote in UK Hip-Hop's history/evolution.
'blunted bumpkin buskers' EP was recorded in '93...thirty years ago 🤯
Was that actually Jehst though
I was introduced to Jehst just before came to London from Poland in 2005. I saw Jehst in Kentish Town around that time.
Appericate the fact you managed to get Jehst on as he rarely does interviews 🙏👊 it was super interesting as well it felt like a real conversation between mates rather than a typical standard interview and that;s dope 🔥 was some proper gems of knowledge 🔥📊📉📈🗃📠 been a fan of Jesht since about 2005 he is in my top 5 Brit rappers off all time (in no numerical order) big up Jesht, YNR & LG
Fam you can't even spell Jehst??
@@paddy_wax Grammar police alert? Anyway thanks for letting me know what kind of person you are
@@undergroundone3 'Battling me, that'd be an embarrassing mistake like promoters who don't get the H in the right place'
Jehst's words 🤣
@@paddy_wax Yeh thanks again for letting me know i made a typo which has been corrected now so if being a spell checker is all you do with yr time then that's some sad way to be! and there is no more to say 🤡
❤👑jehst...memz💯💯best days of my life. Saw him in Manchester at the night and day bar in princess st..with J-Live. Was soooo dope. Buy paint in the arndale, dance hard after that. Standard
New album is fire. Big up Jehst

The man the myth the god.
Unbelievable talent - paints novels with his kliedascopic bars.

Jehst is a legend 👑
Best to ever do it in my opinion. Grew up on it. I can't put into words what this guy's music means to me.
Very few can match Jehst for me
So much knowledge on this episode.
Big interview 👊🏽👑❤️👑
Great pod, big love too these two x
GOAT. period
Hey Man More Love From Canada God Bless You
The term 'back pack' is interesting & i believe it has different meanings depending where u live, because in early 90's in uk when my cru used to dig all day for breaks & instead of takin our records back home to go to a jam we would take our pack full of records being young & staying out all day vibin with hip hop frds! Its just how i interpret it from my experience.
Not really backpackers tend to listen to underground hip hop the term came about as the people who listened to this type of music especially in the 90,s until about 05 b4 the internet really took off people who listened to this type of music would typically u wear back back packs to carry record walkmans spraycans it's a universal phrase
backpackers were underground hip hop heads that didn't fuck with the commercial boujee shit, from my understanding
JEHST! Get the H in the right place!
In student nights and hip-hop nights in Manchester through the 90s, it was common to see kids on the Dancefloor dancing with their backpacks on. Always Eastpack or Jansport.
Shoutout from Hungary!
Uk’s Rap King
SKORZAYEE and ALL the Northern connection need repping up!

Uk legend
Surprised at the bias when he said people wouldn't like this podcast.
Remember finding your CDs in HMV back in the day.
Much integrity.
The name Jehst was looking for is Harold Hunter in the Zoo York Mixtape video! RIP Harold Hunter

1:11:17 Champions of Nature talk
London was/is too insular ... The smallest capital ever...
In 1990 I didnt know where the North was...
Through raving I realised the midlands wasnt the North.
Nothing wrong with that scene.
But as a hip hopper back then in the 80s until acidhouse.
As a southerner it was impossible to get into the ego scene.
Maybe superficial?
I grew up in Buckinghamshire.
Im 50 now.
But still.
If it wasn't for Mike Allen.
I wouldnt be still passionate about underground music❤❤❤
❤
dude. i just saw a jehst freestyle on youtube. uk kung fu hip hop. with orchestra beat.
dude is a phenomenon
I think backpack hiphop came from the Washington park freestyler era? Wordsworth, pack fm, gaston and all them?
Alcoholic author 💥
interesting
My own interpretation of the term "backpack rapper" has always been the more concious, lyrical form of rapping. The back packing nerds that study the art and go deeper with the content as opposed to the more gangster side of things. 😁
Daily planet is a banger
Mark B Rip died in Oz and much respect ❤❤❤...
But brauntax sorry braintax moved to Australia at around the same time.
I hope braintax talks soon or karma getting to him like a given.
Hopefully I'm wrong...
But the rhyme and reason needs explaining😢
