As Louis died before his father, he never became King of France, but he is the father of three kings of France: Louis XVI, Louis XVIII and Charles X.

He should have been the king of France since he was so generous, thoughtful and kind. His son, future Louis XVI had no interest in ruling. But he inherited his love for family, faithfulness to wife and compassion from his father.

He was to a certain point, but he was a horrible father to Louis XVI, who suffered from his parent's neglect after the death of his older brother...

Its nice to see a royal devoted to his mother, wife and children. Its so rare. Also can't help but wonder how different things could have been if he had become King instead of his son.

Louis Ferdinand was a devout man and believed the monarchy in France needed to be reformed. It is said that he would have been a better king than his father or any of his sons.

Louis Ferdinand was quite hard on his son Louis-Auguste, future Louis XVI. The boy was already negatively compared to his brothers by a lot of people at court. The dauphin prefered his oldest son, , whom he considered a perfect child. Everything Louis-Auguste did did not live up to his brother's standards in his parents' eyes and he felt their favouritism and neglect deeply. Louis Ferdinand would often deny Louis-Auguste hunting parties because he felt his son wasn't working hard enough on his studies even when his teachers were complimentary regarding his progress.
When Louis-Joseph fell sick, Louis-Auguste was forced to be his companion as per his sibling's request, enduring the bullying of the sick boy and being a witness to his decline. However, it seemed the future sovereign understood and still loved his brother as he'd name his first son after him (and the boy would die of the same disease). When Louis, duke of Burgundy died, Louis Ferdinand and his wife did not transfer their love on Louis-Auguste who had been by his brother's side but on Charles-Philippe, the future Charles X because he was mentally more like the deceased Louis-Joseph than him.
The future king would say later in his life that he wished there was a thing he knew that his father didn't.

It would be interesting to hear about Louis Ferdinand's feelings about his experiences in war. He was present at the battle of Fontenoy but never played a real role in the French military. He and his father only had the function of observers. Nevertheless there is a painting which shows Louis Ferdinand in the new French dragoon uniform in Versailles. On many paintings Louis Ferdinand is looking somehow overweight (maybe due to his dislike for hunting or riding) but on others he is slim.
I would doubt that he would have been a better king. Louis Auguste followed his instructions after the death of Louis XV and dismissed the Terrays and had chosen Maurepas. Some biographers call him a virtuous old idiot. Too old to recognize the urgent problems of the monarchy.

French kings had always been Spanish princes. Louis XIV’s mother and wife were spanish princesses. And the blood ran deeply in the family.
This gave french kings an apathetic flare where they lived debauched lives. The perfect traits for ruling an absolutist kingdom. If Maria Rafaela of Spain survived and had been the mother of Louis XVI. The french revolution would not have happened.
Kindness, concern for the people, and loyalty to your wife are fatal and catastrophic flaws for a french king.
