I hope you all enjoy this weeks episode! We absolutely loved filming this video tour and exploring this very special permaculture community. We were even treated to a very special concert in the communal yurt on the land and we have included a glimpse from that at the end of the video. It's always inspiring to see people coming together to do such wonderful work. Enjoy! Love Bryce & Rasa

I really like seeing small houses that aren't built on trailer bases. Those are cool too but they get a bit repetitive in design since they're all the same long rectangle. Little houses built on the ground that can be any shape and height, with patios and courtyards, feel under-represented in the small house movement!

    • @SarahTree
      @SarahTree 5 ปีที่แล้ว +58

Yes I totally agree 100%! Also I live near a town where there are tiny homes that have been there for over 100 years. I would love to see some of these old tiny houses in videos as well. 😊

Not everyone has access to a permanent land, so therefore permanent construction of small housing doesn’t happen as often as something movable. Also, and more annoyingly, government has put tones on restrictions on what’s possible to built permanently and what isn’t. Probably not convenient for their friends the bankers that live on exploiting people with outrageous home loans fees.
We all should move more towards communal living and put pressure on changing local governmental laws that prevent people from finding and building permanent small living.
Like Sasha said on this video, housing should be a right for any human being.

Thank you Bryce and Rasa for taking me down the memory lane. This house is beautiful.

Getting a bit emosh over here. Have been homeless many times and treated like dirt so often simply for not being given the same opportunities as others. This community and lifestyle is so intentional and touching to me because I always wanted to travel and wwoof and learn about the world before misfortune struck my life. Thinking it's too late to become who I've always wanted to be has been my challenge the last few years and is slowly burning off. I will plant a seed in my heart this year to shake that ground.

I'm convinced that communal living is the future. This idea of everyone having a separate house, car, toaster, goddamn leafblower etc etc, is good only for those who get rich selling us possessions. For people like me who are disabled and struggle to live - impossible to live independently - on the disability benefit, living communally would be so liberating. I hope we both can make up for lost time and travel and fulfill our dreams 🙂

It should also be born of personal responsibility, not demanding an overloaded government provide it. When people have things handed to them because they have six kids with random father, they don't tend to appreciate it. Most homeowners I know have worked at jobs they detested so that they could have a decent home for their family. They take care of those homes and yard. When they retire, they have something to show for their labor. I believe pride of ownership makes all the difference in the world, and also teaches their kids responsibility.

Adele Clarke well...it was her house to begin with🙄
She started it and did much of the work before he came along...so wouldn’t she be the expert on her own home?
If I came along to my partners home after they built it, and they were doing a special on the home, I wouldn’t speak up as much either.
It’s not like he was trying to say that much. Some couples are like that and it works.

This one was really important. Earthen buildings are so light on resources & they fit so well in the landscape as well as so beautiful & warm for our souls. This couple is very straight forward; no ego-I really think they are doing vital work that's very real and true. She's right that building codes are what obstructs this clear solution. Thanks.

I love how you profile many different types of small homes and lifestyles, and this is definitely an interesting glimpse of alternative living. Bryce, you're an excellent presenter, always amiable, and your enthusiasm and respect for the enormous variety of design and craftsmanship you encounter is very cool. Your videos are also very well filmed and edited. Maybe someday you'll make a "making of" video and show us how you get the aerial shots, etc. Bon voyage back to NZ and have a wonderful summer. With thanks and love from Paris. xx

I'm 67 y.o. I was a junior member of the flower-power generation. They are about 70ies, now. But this kind of life was there on those days. And the people.
To see them coming back today, in such a diffent era, with more resources and knowledge, is very moving to me. Impossible not to cry.
We were soundly defeated in the past. And now we have a real fighting chance to win a real life. Finnaly chance is coming. For real.

It is a lot of 'work'. But when it's something you are going to use or live in, it doesn't seem like work. It seems like survival mode...in a good and fun way. It's your home.

I find this so interesting and beautiful. It's true that it is so hard to get into and maintain a "traditional " home and live the lifestyle. For these homes I'm wondering more about how they obtained this property and legalities of it? Who owns it? Will government ever seize it? And materials, they said most were from the land, what other resources did they utilize? Do community members have outside jobs for cash? I assume most are vegan/vegetarian and that's fine. I have no issue with ppl's personal choice but, are there any who raise livestock and such for other food sources? Permits? I thought California was hard.... nearest town? Sorry I hardly expect an answer to these many Q's. I'm truly curious. I wish you all the best. God bless!

If you click on the quail springs link in the description, their website will answer your questions. I clicked it because this video kind of made me want to run away and join a commune, lol!
They are crowdfunding and getting grant money to purchase the 450 acre property. It seems to be near Ventura / Ojai, CA. They make money by holding educational retreats on topics like permaculture design, earthen buildings, art, and tracking wildlife. :) All of which still kinda makes me want to run away and join their commune, hehe.
