"Is it people buying it because they want to put it in their purses?" Yes. Can confirm, this is the only reason why my wife bought one. Mini purses do not fit bigger phones.
Most women seem to carry larger purses. I always thought the phone size/weight thing was actually a bigger concern for men due to this. My wife has her iPad in her purse half the time. 😆
Also protects the screen from stuff inside the purse (keys, coins, etc). Unfortunately, the "dust in hinge" problem is kind of worse in a purse. Also, women's pants don't have deep pockets. Larger phones slip out of pockets all the time.
@@DuyNguyen-yx2vd but the screen is plastic! they warn you about making sure theres nothing in between and you’re constantly banging the top and bottom when closing it. You can scratch that thing with a freaking nail.
@@GlorifiedGremlin Dbrand profits more from you thinking they are a fun company then being interested in a specific product. It builds a relationship to their entire brand instead of just to a specific product. It also creates loads of in-jokes with LTT, which is obviously a very strong brand to people watching this channel. So, dbrand is quite clever with this, honestly. Also, I'm one of those people who almost always scroll past the ad, dbrand ones don't feel like ads but feels like sketches, so there, I stick to it. And I honestly also like the brand somewhat and might even use it at some point (especially since I noticed they are shipping free to Europe (a bit uncertain about taxes and such though).
As a Verizon Sales rep we definitely sell the Z-flip a surprising amount. It's a combination of factors, first and foremost is the pocketablility. Women's pants just don't have large pockets so it really appeals to women specifically in their late 20s-early 40s. Beyond that the pricing is good, $1000 is only $200 more than the standard s22. Also foldables tend to have better promotions available from carriers. Personally I had a Fold 3 for 2 weeks and ended up returning it because it was just unwieldy, a flip would have fit my lifestyle far better as it is a much more manageable size.
@@Sheltur_0311 Opposite for me. I like Apple's hardware, but iOS is current insufferable. Hopefully iOS 17 will add more essential features to appeal to pro users.
The reason I got one was to, ironically, spend less time on my phone. For me it's a mindfulness thing - physically opening up my phone makes me realize how much I'm using it. Now I'm spending less time endlessly scrolling through TH-cam and using it to just text, call, and check on work email. Pretty liberating IMO.
@@SomeThingOrMaybeAnother, what? It's folding feature is the most gimmicky. Fold has a clear advantage of bigger screen for larger videos, text, desktop view for websites and decent space to work with two apps simultaneously. The only thing for flip is... well, it's a cool party trick.
@@rinrin4711 Smaller footprint inside pocket/purse, the screen is protected from getting scuffed while folded, its neat. Fold has to deal with lack of app support, which this one likely wont run into, fold can be feasibly replaced by a tablet (with how its priced a phone + tablet combo might be on par or even cheaper) Thats all I could think of, I dont own either and dont intend on getting any of these until they've further matured but theres reasons for both to exist.
I bought a Flip 3 because I was tired of getting poked in my hip bone every time I raised my legs or sat in a chair when wearing slim fit jeans and chinos by my old phone. Flip 3 so far has been great to own, such a conversation starter as well and I don't even notice the crease anymore. Don't think I'll go back to a regular phone tbh.
This. Testing pocketability in trainers as he does in the video just makes no sense. In any decent tight fitting pair of pants, regular phones poke on your hip. I think that reviewers should start to consider that not everyone wears baggy sport pants all day.
I'm actually surprised how much I use the tiny screen, especially for music and notifications. Also, the whole design weirdly makes me feel less distracted by my phone throughout the day. Using it "camcorder" style is also pretty great for recording longer things, it's far more comfortable than a traditional phone. Reading while at a table is also more comfortable, no need to prop the phone up or anything, can just bend it for a nice reading angle. Same goes for video calling. I also always have an issue with my phone screens getting scratched up in my pocket, and it's basically impossible while folded. It is admittedly thicker in the pocket, but it also feels less likely to fall out due to it's smaller size. Normal phones like to fall out of my shorts all the time, this one has yet to come close.
Yes, this dude gets it. You dont know you want a foldable until you actually use one daily. This phone feels stupid in instore demo, but using one everyday is life changing. Now if it only samsung can squeeze a bigger battery in it. Anything less than 4000 is barely usable these days.
@@ilovelimpfries You just need to know how to manage and protect your battery. And it's not at all difficult to carry around a small powerbank in a bag or something
I bought this for the fun. I figured it would give me the novelty of a folding phone with minimal compromises. I had no idea how useful it would be! It's basically a built in stand, the camera has a lot of versatility for taking selfies and group photos using the better sensors, I can even use it as a tripod to film things. Also I haven't heard people talk about this but it's a big phone and I like big phones but I have to use reachability setting to go one handed. The ability to partially fold the phone is the best reachability feature in any phone! I can go one anded without skipping a beat. I love this phone!
3:45 not actually an incorrect statement. I know a few people that carry small purses as an accessory and it fits in those. When you add the absolute brain dead decision by clothes designers to give women either no, or awfully small pockets. It makes some sense.
@@Rivanni I feel like the problem is more about the depth of the pocket. A large, long phone will stick out of the pocket a lot. This is shorter and will fit in the whole pocket. Maybe it's 2x thick, but let's be honest, that is still probably much thinner than the average wallet.
@@Rivanni When dresses were first designed, women's dresses didn't need pockets as they always carried a reticule that they carried, had a servant or hired a street urchin to do the carrying of their goods. They did in many cases carry a small-sized bag around either their neck or waist to hold a few coins or a small amount of money, medicine, here I'm talking more about the upper class, but that's who most dresses were designed for. Bulges disturbed the lines of the clothing and thus ruin the esthetics of the garment.
@@brianjohnson2488 European historical dresses had pockets and they were quite large, they were just a separate undergarment - they were on a cord that would be tied around the waist over the petticoats but under the overskirt, and the overskirt would have a slit that you could reach through to access the pocket. Women of all classes had these pockets.
I've been using the Flip 3 since release and I love it. yes the battery life isn't the best and the phone does have a few small quirks, but for what I need it suits me perfectly. My screen is always protected in my pocket, it folds into a small foot print (yes it's chunkier but way more comfortable in my pocket than a big heavy slab), and it functions pretty well for every day use. The only person who I wouldn't recommend a flip to is someone who is a power user who is always gaming or consuming media and socials. I know after converting to a flip phone that I will never go back to a slab phone if given a choice. And for all of you comparing the Flip with the Fold, you guys clearly have no idea. They are completely different products who suit different users with different needs.
truth. i love the flip. i'm not a phone gamer or power user. i like the nostalgia of a flip phone and you can bet your ass that if the newest razr gets released in the states i will buy it. the screen is protected from scratches by other items in you pocket, like keys or coins. its a fun phone. you can pair it with a watch and take control of the camera. its good tech. battery life is my only complaint
As someone who recently started daily driving a Flip 3 I can easily say that the flip form factor is just a lot of fun. It maybe chunkier in the pocket but at least it doesn't take up the entirety of my pocket like a normal slab phone, also riley you can pick up calls when it's closed. It just automatically goes into speakerphone mode kind of like a walkie talkie or a smartwatch. The only real downside to these phones is that the screens are garunteed to die out at some point due to the folding which is why I personally prefer the Surface duo approach
The problem with surface duo is that it's 2 screens with huge gap in the middle, you cant really use it like a tablet like fold, only 2 tall screens which you can assign 2 tabs on each
@@Simon-tr9hv That's not the only problem with the Duo; the hardware is very fragile and the software is downright abysmal bad. I replaced my after 2 weeks.
I’d love the Duo approach if they stopped releasing them with generations old hardware (duo 1 didn’t even have NFC…) and shit software. Oh and if they could manage to figure out the camera so there was a front facing and rear while closed like the z-fold
@@nesyboi9421 lol and that's the reason why it's dead, that's the appeal of foldables, it's still the same size as normal phone but can be used as a tablet with much larger screen, what you gonna do with 2 seperate screen?
Yeah.... Riley really forgot about the pockets (or lack there of) in women's clothing. I know two flip owners, and the first thing they both showed off was "look. It ACTUALLY fits in my jeans pocket". Considering that my wife has to take her phone out of her pocket to sit down without crushing it, I can see a LOT of people being excited by the compactness of a flip. I'm pretty sure if he asked Nicole, Emily, Sarah, Yvonne, or anyone else who has to deal with women's jeans, they would tell him the same thing.
The same issue I had with his overview of the Surface Duo 2. He made all these gestures that nobody would actually do and then complains that the gestures don't work.
@@cablefeed3738 big disagree. You could tell he just doesn’t like foldables. and it’s cool if he doesn’t like those types of phones, but to be 3 minutes in a video and hearing him run in circles saying “who would buy this?! What’s the point?“ should’ve just had one of the ladies or Linus make the unboxing not a Google Pixel fanboy.
Yes.. you can answer the phone / hang up when its closed. It defaults to speakerphone when answering when it's closed as well. It's actually a nice feature when it's sitting on your desk. Having it folded open like a laptop on your desk is also nice for texting - you're not leaning over or picking up the phone to text to get a better angle at the screen. :)
10:37 You actually can answer and make phone calls with the phone closed, it's just on speaker phone (or if you have some headphones or earbuds, obviously the call audio will be in those). I find it very neat and handy especially because I do use one of the cover widgets as my favorite contacts and when I need to make a quick call, I don't have to open the phone at all.
While there are definitely some benefits to this form factor, I think the number 1 draw to this phone for most people is... fun. A lot of people long for the days when phones were more fun, and not just another rectangular slap with slightly better specs.
The reason I want to buy one is because taking out your phone becomes much more of an action. I use my phone way to much, so by making it a more "complicated" use, to check notifications or whatever, would probably help a bit. Also, new tech, it's cool.
Riley peaked at about 97 years old in this overview. I know folding isn't for me, but there are reasons people would want it. So much hate in his heart
The fold style ones make sense to me, phone sized in your pocket, tablet sized when unfolded, but yeah they're too expensive still. The flip ones make no sense to me at all, it turns from a nice pocketable slim phone into a 2x as thick rectangle.
@@KriLL325783 many skinny jeans made for women have small pockets that won't fit every phone. If you want a smaller pocketbook, it's easier to carry. Also "just being cool" is a valid reason to me. If being cool didn't matter, we'd all be wearing Grey clothes and short cropped hair. Choice is good, even if it's not for you.
As I'm sure many people have already pointed out, you can in fact take calls as well as start calls from the cover screen It defaults to being on speaker when it is folded rather than using the earpiece
It's my first foldable phone and I honestly love it. Listening to music on it sort of reminds me of the MP3/MP4 era. And yes you can answer calls while folded, but it's speakerphone
@@4knetic723 Personally I bought it for one reason (flip3), I do a lot of video conferences, and the fact that it doesn't need any support pretty much any where you are (meaning you don't need to have a stand available every there you're sitting throughout the day) don't need to try and prop it up against everything is quite good, obviously it's only useful if you do a lot of video calls... also this feature extends to taking group photos from a distance. Otherwise though the screen is always protected when closed, it's also very easy to scratch when open, granted it only scratches the screen protection that can be changed, it's still a pain. The battery life is crap... But then I do actually use my phone mostly for calling (which can now be done from the cover screen on select numbers) so can help to improve battery life, shame that answering the phone closed is still f'in incompatible with whatsapp calls... It's gimmicky phone that does have some useful specific use case scenarios but that's about it

I didn't do copious research about it, didn't have the biggest expectations, but I really like it. The form factor to me is a detail not the point. Specs are good, audio is decent, I like the camera...it's a good phone that folds on top of it, not a crappy phone with a folding gimmick.
David asking, "you're not a smart watch guy are you?" Shows that they realized their mistake in host choice. I get that Short Circuit is an unboxing channel, but if LMG isn't going to give the phone more time then I'd rather have a host who shows a balanced interest in novel products. Someone who is within the potential target market. That said, I am glad to have watched Riley's skepticism towards the phone, but that's about all we got.
We got skepticism and his usual bad jokes. It was particularly grating this time since large phones can be a pain for women because the pockets in their clothes are smaller. I got one because I got tired of fumbling for my phone inside a pocket full of other things. Nor do I really use the screen for more than reading notifications, I don't need the large screen all the time. If I didn't already have a tablet for watching youtube I would probably have gotten the Fold 4 though since it could serve double duty as a phone and a decent sized mini tablet.

I've had the z flip 3 for like a year now and one of the biggest benefits is that the screen never gets scratched. Since it's folded in my pocket the screen is super protected from all the junk in my pockets.
also if you drop it the screen will be protected especially from my understanding most people that drop their phone is when they're grabbing it out of their pocket or from a table

@@jumbomuffin1316 Then you just have a phone with a scratched up screen protector that you gotta live with or replace constantly. My phone also has a case. They make them for the flip.
I was skeptical at first but I got a flip 3 right when it came out and I love it, the form factor makes so much more sense sitting deeper in your pocket like a wallet and while the outside screen isn't super useful it does enough that I'm really glad it's there (and yes you can answer phone calls with it closed on speaker by default). It's just fun to fidget with sometimes too and the camera tripod mode has been incredibly useful on many occasions
Perhaps the size is more appealing to women since their pockets are always super tiny. My wife won’t even try with her current phone, but perhaps with a folded phone it might fit?
If that was the case women wouldn’t love buying the iPhone Pro Max. The iPhone 12 mini also wouldn’t have flopped. I feel the appeal is the smartphone market has matured so the flip is just something that is different. It doesn’t really offer anything that makes you life better but it folds.
Watching this Flip 4 review on my Flip 4 is great 😂 It's definitely not a phone for everyone, but I work primarily from a desk and having a phone that can physically close stops me from getting sucked in with every notification. As for the pocket, he's right, its a little clunky in guy's pockets, but then just don't fold it, it's plenty thin. But for backpacking, running/biking, man this phone is great! Just fold it up, throw it in your bag and you're good to go. Great cameras and taking group photos when you don't have a random stranger to hand the phone to is pretty nifty when it comes up as well 👍

"You have a phone that's nice and thin, that fits in your pocket" *cue uproarious laughter from everyone who's ever worn women's clothing and tried to fit a standard candybar smartphone into it*
a bunch of men's clothes will have a regular phone poking out, which i hate. or a huge hideous outline depending on fabric, specially if you wear formal. you won't have to deal with this if you dress like a child, like this dude tho. i also don't think the "nice and thin" argument works for everybody, but yeah women have it way worse, now they don't even fit in formal purses.
Guesses as to why it's the most popular: 1) It's the cheapest folding phone from a notable brand 2) while folded, the interior screen is protected, making it safer for pockets, bags, etc 3) it fits in smaller bags (e.g. purses) 4) it fits in shallower pockets, even if it bulges more.
yep and those reasons can get you pretty far. I know I want one. Also for more shallow reasons; 5) Its a status symbol of "i got the money for cutting edge technology"... Having a folding phone > iPhone in terms of status these days.
Having a flip phone with a small notification screen helps reduce screen on time A LOT. Also helps with focus. Also when folded and placed on the table ur now worried about the screen. The compact form factor when folded means it fits in ur pocket or small waist bag when you are out for a run, workout or just a walk around the park. Holding it folded when making payment via samsung pay is definitely more convenient thatn hovering a 6 inch phone with the screen all exposed when tapping to pay, it fits snuggly in your palm and no one can even look at the small screen behind ur hands. Taking wide angle selfies, group selfies with the main camera while the phone is folded when you are out on a trip with family and friends, the phone fit snugly in ur palm, 1 handed, and u can snap a photo with voice or palm detection, no need to fumble with a selfie stick or a 6.7 inch slab using the selfie camera which is much lesser than the main camera, or trying to use the main camera while guessing ur shot. Not to mention step by step navigation from the cover screen, which is so convenient while walking, riding or even driving, its something u can fit snugly in the palm of your hands, instead of lightly holding a 6 inch slab which can easily fall off or snatched. OMG there is SO MUCH advantage to this form factor. There is a reason why its becoming popular.
Honestly, this particular phone is exactly what my fiancee needed. It fits in her handbag seemlessly and tbh when we travel the "tripod" camera mode was super handy
The longer I have my Flip 3, the more I enjoy it. It's so convenient to toss in a shirt pocket or many smaller coat pockets that wouldn't be big enough for a regular phone. And I like how much I can see/do without even opening the phone. I just wish it had a better camera, to at least be able to zoom a little bit. I keep mine at 60hz so battery isn't an issue at all.
I had a case with a ring on it, it was kinda cool as a cute briefcase and gave a nice secure hold on it + when unfolded it doubled as a kickstand. This is not possible on a non-folding phone, kickstand cases are gigantic or rings protrude like crazy. Too bad my screen gave in after 5 months of folding&unfolding.
I have this flip 4...i'm commenting on it right now, and believe me..what he says about this is kinda true at some point...i even experimented on this multiple times, when i got the phone last week..it feels weightier when folded..it doesnt make sense, but like he said, it feels denser....i think it's because the 'center of gravity' plays the role here...when it opened up, the phone is wider, so the center of gravity also spread wider..when it folded, all the weight (even it's the same weight' becoming centered..i don't know how to say it, but 'denser' is a good word to match that 'weightier feeling'
@@deadlybear92 I would guess it’s a combination of how much further it protrudes to the side, and how much of the weight is concentrated right at the bottom of the pocket
@@deadlybear92 yes, it is called weight distribution, while folded, you feel the weight stronger because the two slabs ar parallel with each other, while unfolded they sit on each other, which makes it FEEL lighter

It's the shape and where the weight sits. It may weigh the same, but have vastly different use cases due to its form. Thicker phone in this case, can mean it can push onto the body more and it would also push heavier in a smaller spot. For jeans it's probably better, I don't know. Jeans are so stiff, would never wear such things. Some have mentioned smaller pockets on women's clothing. I have never paid attention to such a thing, so I don't know. To someone ignorant on the subject, I'd just buy "men's" pants if that was an issue. Why buy an expensive phone instead? The more surface area, the more it's distributed in other areas. Get a small ball that weighs the same and it may puncture the pocket, for example. Maybe not, this phone probably doesn't weigh much. But if you get up in multiple kilograms and it's a tiny ball, probably.

You can actually accept and deny calls while it's closed/unfolded, it just puts it on speaker, then you can fold it out and it goes to ear speaker amd then you cna close the phone to deny call
@@jerrycaidic08 There wasn't enough thought put into this video. I was like dude it goes into speaker phone mode. I could totally get if you aren't into that (I'm not myself.), but come on, no one is stupid enough to make something like this where you would have to hold the folded phone up to your ear.
I've had a lot of my friends buy either the Flip or an iPhone, and most of their reasons for getting such devices were because they looked beautiful. Seriously, that's it. We techies tend to forget that majority of the customers don't really care about the performance of a phone - that is, in terms of highly demanding stuff like gaming - most of the people would get a phone that looks good and takes good photos. Aaand in terms of pricing, most would get their phones tied to a plan, instead of paying full price from the start, and many of the carriers have varying prices, so the inital MSRP wouldn't really matter to quite a lot of people.
It's like Flossy said. The real reason a lot of people buy this phone is so they can whip it out at the restaurant or club or with their friends and have the most unique phone. Nobody cares about you getting a new iPhone with how iterative they've been recently, whereas every person you show a flipping phone to wants to at least try it once. And compared to the Fold it just becomes a regular ol' flagship, not really any compromises other than a hit to battery life and durability concerns. Not saying it's a good reason but it really is a good conversation starter.
Ya seriously good point about the iphone. There is nothing special about having the new iphone anymore, because it is going to look exactly the same as your friend's 5 year old iphone, so just looking at you holding it there will be zero indication that you spent so much money recently lmao. That ticks some people off lol they want to brag without having to use words hahaha
exactly, I feel like things like tech should be mostly objective, you can say if you like it or dislike it but he just kept on complaining every second
The worst thing is that there are plenty of real criticisms to levy at this phone: the price without some trade in or carrier deal, the size of the secondary screen (Though I suppose a bigger screen would negatively impact battery life.), and the inability to set google assistant activation for the power button to name a few.
I got one before release for my mom, unboxed it on my channel, and my mom loves it. It combines what she loves about flip phones and smart phones and it fits in her purse perfectly. If I could have gotten a second, I'd have one as well.
Having used the flip 3 for almost a year, it's amazing how many things he's gotten wrong in this video. It's like a vegan reviewing a barbecue smoker/grill. Shouldn't really be the one showcasing a foldable if you haven't ever used one or have no intention to do so.
Zflip 3 user here. I'm not a women who puts it in a purse, and I'm not someone who holds it like an older camera. I'm a guy who barely uses his phone at all, and carries several things in my pockets every day. When you carry an inhaler, a big ring of keys, a wallet, and emergency allergy meds in the same 2 pockets every day? The full size of a standard iphone with a case becomes shockingly cumbersome. So Samsung's flip design actually helps a lot for my needs, allowing me to carry my phone with less vertical space taken up in my pocket. Plus, I have zero interest in mobile games, and never use my phone for watching media. The most I ever use it for is taking notes, using my calendar, and making phone calls. But on the rare occasion that I am browsing the web with it, it feels very nice to set the phone down and CLOSE IT. It is not there to invite me with notifications, and it is not a device extending from my hand. It's a thing that is flipped shut and put aside. And because I don't play games on my phone or anything, the battery lasts for several days before charging, even though most reviews claim it "can't last half a day". Those reviewers must be addicted to their phones or something. The battery is great when staring at facebook isn't your life.
two reason the fold might make sense(also never owned foldable screen but have owned older flip phones before). one, in smaller pockets(the ones in your shorts are actually quite large compared to some) larger phones can peak out making it more likely they fall out. two, when folded would theoretically protect the screen(though they seem to have a bunch of warnings about dust issues so maybe not as good a point on that model)
About Riley's concern over thickness. Yes, it's thicker when folded up, but it's much smaller. I have a hernia mesh inside me, and large phones sometimes push against it when sitting or walking, which is both uncomfortable and makes me nervous. I am genuinely considering getting the Flip as my next phone solely because it would be deeper inside my pocket and nowhere near my hernia patch.
dust doesn't ruin your phone, its just they wanna be in the safe side. A youtuber throw a whole load of sand on it and it didn't affect anything, just be careful thats it
my guy, you can flip it open like an old school flip phone, iv been doing if since i got my flip3 at launch, crack it open a little with the thumb and flick your wrist, dont be scared, its durable enough for it.
I'm a Big tall person who has huge pockets (I used to pocket my vita). The tiny form factor of my flip3 was the big deal for me. The protection from the flip is also a big deal for me. It also fits on my bike perfectly, its no bigger on my bars than my heads up unit. The front screen with Cover OS is crazy useful to me. I normally watch yt through it in bed.
First video I've seen of this guy, and it's all, "I'm so confused, I don't understand anything, everything is dumb, people who like this are bad." I think I'll go find an actual good review.
You can answer or make phone calls with it closed, it just defaults to speakerphone. You can set it to auto switch off speaker when you open the phone, which is nice, too. And then of course answering/ending a call by opening/closing the phone are optional settings too I've had the phone for a couple weeks now and I love it personally. Yeah, it's thicker when folded up, but I feel like I'm less likely to drop it. I also love the cover screen, since I can easily check the time, notifications, and do other things like control my music and check the weather, which I've been doing a lot recently. The phone is slimmer (in terms of width) than my last one (S20+), and I honestly enjoy it a lot. I can more easily reach more things with one thumb. The placement of the fingerprint sensor is also very comfortable and easy to reach. Overall I'm very happy so far with my Flip 4, although the same can't be said for my new carrier... But hey, I managed to get the phone itself for free because pre-order promotion
The only benefits of a phone like the Flip are having a cinematic 21:9 display fold into a manageable form factor and phone becoming its own camera stand.
@@Rivanni talk about having a light saber in your pocket. Jokes aside, yes, it isn't a big deal, but the foldable technology addresses that to some extent.
I've had almost a day to think about this, and I know LTT won't give a shit about this one comment out of 1k+: But I think this review epitomizes the bias that the tech community has. White tech savvy male reviewing a product and the glints of insights as to other's use cases (purse as an example) is immediately brushed aside as either unimportant or unrealistic. I don't think Riley is TRYING to be biased, or sexists, or whatever-ist, but this review shows how easy it is for ANY of us to do so. His bias made him unable to actually look at the product with any critical or understanding eye. Why not the next time you have a very popular product to review and the reviewer "doesn't get it" - Stop. Stop it right there, and go get someone on staff who DOES at least understand the appeal even if it's not for them. Throw a survey up on twitter, get ideas of how people are using this. Also, stop lying to yourselves, short circuit ARE reviews.
100%. This reviewer on ShortCircuit seems very biased and won't even try to see the appeal on certain designs or features. If you go into a review already "disliking" the idea, you're going to dislike everything.
I think the opposite is far worse, if you'll have a dazzled person review a product that doesn't make much sense, they'll call every stupid feature revolutionary. A skeptic person makes a better, sober review than a dazzled one
Its a phone that's supposed to have mass market reveal, get off of Twitter and realize you literally shitting on a guy for 1. Color of skin 2. Judging the mass appeal of an item
Bought it just because it the feature of bending opens up so many possibilities. I feel like the more creative you are, the more useful you will find this phone.
2:25 Yes, for a guy, a normal phone fits in the pocket. For females, pockets are hard to come by. Having it folded fits in the pocket much better. I won't get the phone since I can't justify $1,000 for a phone.
Fashion industry: under no circumstances shall a woman carry things in fabric hewn out of their pants, SO SAITH THE LORD Tech industry: fuck it let's just make a *folding screen* then
Most people buy the flip for flex mode. It's incredibly helpful for use with the cameras, watching video and multitasking. I sure as hell didn't pay as much as I did for my old flip 5g just so I could fold it smaller.
Just came back from the Huawei review. And yes, Riley was super biased on the flip lmao. It made the video super funny ngl. But it did make it feel more like a sketch than a tech review so I can understand why some people were exasperated. In the future, try to bring in someone who is excited about the product or someone that doesn't like it but is very knowledgeable about the features. Great video!
Wow it's almost like it's nostalgic and the realization of some of the first concept sketches when OLED technology was first announced. There are probably photoshopped pictures of this exact thing from 2008. It's cool, not hard to grasp.
exactly, the best analogy would be cars, nobody needs those fancy cars with a billion horse power, fly open doors, 200mph speeds, etc. the reason why people get them is because it's cool and an enjoyable product to use.
it's really good for people who have tiny pockets (like, e.g, every woman), and needing to unfold it means that you need to be really deliberate about using your phone. I was kind of skeptical but I bought it anyways since the tradein deals were too good, and I actually am loving it.
I also thought that the Camcorder hold for shooting is just a gimmick, but I found myself using it in one-handed operations when taking a picture (usually selfies). Since you get a better grip than the usual way.
ffs, i like mine, no more scratched screens, it fits my pockets better, the music controls are dope and I can stand it on my desk and car half folded, it rocks. Needs bigger battery but that seems to be addressed in the flip4
You can answer calls when it's closed. You can make calls, send voice messages and such when it's folded. I absolutely love this phone! Thanks for your funny video!
I find a six-inch display a major negative for watching media. I use a Tab S7+, but I cannot imagine using flex mode for even a smaller window! That would suck, there is a reason the cinema is the best way to watch video, bigger is better!
Yeah thinness is what matters for stuff in your pocket. It's why so many wireless earbud cases aren't... great. They're shockingly thick and apple actually did a good thing there. Not too thick, very slip, rounded. Means it super easily slips in and out of pockets. A lesson that is apparently incredibly difficult for others to learn. Why.
100% agree on many wireless earbud cases being way too thick. The problem is that most phones have gotten so big that they don't fit into pockets anymore. Especially women's jeans often have really small pockets, where modern phones stick out by 2-5 cm (1-2"). But there are also plenty of other pockets where you might want to put a phone, but can't because phones have gotten too big. The Flip series is certainly not as elegantly thin when folded up as many other phones, but at least it still fits inside pockets without sticking out. I'm sure that is why many people buy it.
Because companies seem to only want to learn the wrong lessons from Apple. Companies can learn to design stuff to be better, as well as build a cult of disposable "premium product design." It would be great if they learned the first lesson, but most try to learn the second one instead.
Not everyone has gigantic pockets that fit a tablet, Riley. I mean I'm pretty long and so my jackets for example are all in the L to XL range, but I've been using phones so big that it has started to be too big even for the pockets of those jackets. Having a flip like this that can be just as big but also smaller is just so convenient. I know not everyone agrees, but the point is that there are people who actually do benefit from having a phone that flips in half, so don't hate on it just because you guys don't need it
I love this dude but he obviously already has his opinion about foldable phones before he even started unboxing it. Having a person who is unbiased would have been better than him complaining about something as common as the lack of an earphone jack. At times it seemed like he was reaching hard for problems about the phone which distracted from the valid points he made about the foldable.
I agree he was the wrong person to do this review. We need someone who is willing to give it a chance. Obviously people like the phone, they shouldn't let the host be the one guy who doesn't get it haha
I appreciate the honesty about the thickness and flipability. Sounds like a nitpick, but with how much we're used to the smartphone slab, you gotta convince me (and others) to get accustomed to a new feel. If you're to do the clamshell design, old flip phones had the experience just right imo.
I've had a flip3 for a year and I love this thing. I admit that it's screen protector is bubbled across the crease, but the phone itself works great and so satisfying to just close the phone fully and hang up on people or brakes the doom scroll on Instagram.
Riley, really? Did you forget that people are not all named Riley? Ya know women's pockets are so small that smartphones sometimes don't even fit? Ya know that some people prefer keepin their phone in the bag, where a flip phone might fit better? Just sayin... 2:35 minutes in and already i have to stop because of the "my experience is the only one that counts" vibes.
I'm with Reilly, but I showed this to my wife and she'd be interested if the price comes down. I guess every phone is too bulky and the folded square would be easier for bags and girl-pockets, like other commenters are saying
Phone companies - you want to impress me?!? Give me an updated version of the phone from "Earth Final Conflict " Flip sideways answer with rolling screen and high definition camera with one button recording. All the size of a glorified short cigar. I DARE YOU!
I'm looking into one of these because I want a smaller phone with a fingerprint sensor in the power button (I had one on my s10e and have wanted one ever since) and the Zenfone 9 is out of the question because Verizon and ASUS are having a hissy fit.
It's the only option for a small actual phone. You want a tiny phone, what are you going to get other than this? Uniherz Jelly? Something from 2015? Weird Chinese brand?
@@LaidBackDeveloper I'm currently using the s21 and I'm under the impression that the s22 is not smaller nor does it have a headphone jack which I would enjoy nor a side mounted fingerprint sensor. I realize that the z flip only has the side mounted fingerprint sensor going for it but I would prefer that to what I have now. Thanks for the idea tho.
Given the money, I would want one to keep in my pocket as I do the current one, but taking less space and with less screen scratches
Wouldn't an iPhone mini be a better fit?

@@rinrin4711 It makes it more compact. It's a normal phone that folds in half. That's it.

Thats all I could think of, I dont own either and dont intend on getting any of these until they've further matured but theres reasons for both to exist.
@@rinrin4711 exactly

Yeah, having that step between checking notifications and bring sucked into Instagram can be nice.
@@Rivannithe flip 4 fits just fine in mine.
I know a few ladies that got a Flip 3 solely for the fact it'll fit in the pockets of their pants whereas the slabs won't.

Yes.. you can answer the phone / hang up when its closed. It defaults to speakerphone when answering when it's closed as well. It's actually a nice feature when it's sitting on your desk. Having it folded open like a laptop on your desk is also nice for texting - you're not leaning over or picking up the phone to text to get a better angle at the screen. :)
Yeah...I'm like what is this guy talking about lol he did 0 research on this.
10:37 You actually can answer and make phone calls with the phone closed, it's just on speaker phone (or if you have some headphones or earbuds, obviously the call audio will be in those). A skin to make it look like a ds would be cool
...or just with a different skin. something like a matte black skin would probably still look good here.
@@sebastianjost yea plain matte black would look sweet.
The point of this skin was not to make the phone look cool or better, my god
It's small, it's (relatively) cheaper, and it doesn't has any competition in its field. That's why it's the most popular foldable in the world 🐚
People don't wanna get the new razr fold because it's not a brand people want. Just like Apple, Samsung is seen as a status thing on Android. Kinda weird

@@Tyanu_Khah You talking the 2020 model? Because the 2022 model seems pretty solid. And when it's closed, there's far more screen real estate than the flip 3/4 which Samsung should be embarrassed about. So much blank canvas for that tiny front.
@@NYC_Goody Yes, i had the opportunity to compare the RAZR 2020 with a flip 1 when i was looking for a new phone.
the appeal of a folding phone for me would be that the screen is protected when folded, i have scratched several phone screens with my other EDC items.. that being said i dont think they are good enough yet,
Just put your other EDC items in a different pocket?
The folding displays are made of plastic, not glass, so it'll scratch easily anyway.

While they CAN be scratched easily, the reality is that will almost never happen. You're not going to scratch it while actively using it, and when you aren't using it it will be folded up and protected.
I daily drove the Fold 2 and 3 from their respective launches (still drive the 3), and my inner display doesn't have even the slightest damage.

I don't blame Riley for not knowing that's an issue, he doesn't really have to encounter that.
Buy proper clothes or wear a purse. It's not a general woman problem, it's individual women making bad decisions and choosing impractical clothing.
@@citizenkane2349 most (or nearly all) women's clothing come with undersized or no pockets. It would take a large collective effort to change that.
a bunch of men's clothes will have a regular phone poking out, which i hate. or a huge hideous outline depending on fabric, specially if you wear formal. you won't have to deal with this if you dress like a child, like this dude tho. i also don't think the "nice and thin" argument works for everybody, but yeah women have it way worse, now they don't even fit in formal purses.
@@bzipoli What are you talking about? Is not wearing a suit dressing like a child?
Guesses as to why it's the most popular:
1) It's the cheapest folding phone from a notable brand
2) while folded, the interior screen is protected, making it safer for pockets, bags, etc
3) it fits in smaller bags (e.g. purses)
4) it fits in shallower pockets, even if it bulges more.
yep and those reasons can get you pretty far. I know I want one.
Also for more shallow reasons;
5) Its a status symbol of "i got the money for cutting edge technology"... Having a folding phone > iPhone in terms of status these days.
OMG do a series with Riley roasting things with his admirable, down-to-earth common sense, pleeeease!
The pocket test doesn't make as much sense, but try fitting it in a small purse, and you'll see just how much of a difference the folding makes.
Thats why they make bigger purses? You don't have to take a tiny bag everywhere
Riley reviewing this like he's 70 years old. He's obviously never had tiny pockets. I can actually keep my flip 4 in my pocket, unlike other phones.
He doesn't wear shorts either. Especially while working out (he doesn't)
Watching this on my zflip4 and would never go back to a normal phone it's so awesome
Kudos to the editor whom certainly had some fun editing this video.
The folding can also double as protection for the screen, less worries about sand/dirt/coins/keys.
Lol'ed when he folded it in half and made it seem like it was suddenly twice the weight 🤣
@@ronins24 that's actually funny..coz in the end, the weight is just the same 😅
@@deadlybear92 Surface area or distribution is different, the weight being the same doesn't matter. Get a knife that weighs the same as a hammer, you think you can cut yourself on the hammer?

The fact that they didn't even try a test call just shows how negatively biased this unboxing video is.
@@jerrycaidic08 There wasn't enough thought put into this video. I was like dude it goes into speaker phone mode. I could totally get if you aren't into that (I'm not myself.), but come on, no one is stupid enough to make something like this where you would have to hold the folded phone up to your ear.
@@jerrycaidic08 another reason to dislike the video
I agree this definitely turns heads
As someone who worked the Samsung Unpacked Event. The Z Flip 4 was popular with Woman, who constantly stated that "it can actually fit in my pocket"
They should’ve had someone else unbox this phone. Bro really pulled up hating on it simply because it’s not his type of phone.
exactly, I feel like things like tech should be mostly objective, you can say if you like it or dislike it but he just kept on complaining every second
Is it that hard to imagine that there are people out there that enjoy phones that actually fit in their pockets?
He only wears pants with giant pockets so he can't understand
i just want to take a moment to thank the editors, the music choices for this video were spot on * chef's kiss *
Tbh I've been considering a Flip device for a while, the 4 is almost there for me, but they just need to address the dust particle issue
Go check out @Jerryrigeverything's recent durabilty test on it, seems they fixed most of the issue
I read a comment that someone had worked in a polycarbonate factory with their flip 3 since release and they hadn’t encountered any issues.
dust doesn't ruin your phone, its just they wanna be in the safe side. A youtuber throw a whole load of sand on it and it didn't affect anything, just be careful thats it
as long as you're not sandman you'll be fine
i have a flip 3 and have had it since it launched. never had any dust problems.

You can answer or make phone calls with it closed, it just defaults to speakerphone. You can set it to auto switch off speaker when you open the phone, which is nice, too. And then of course answering/ending a call by opening/closing the phone are optional settings too
I've had the phone for a couple weeks now and I love it personally.
Well, the Xperia 1 series exist for that.
How about the screen not being exposed so it’s less likely to get dinged?
@@Rivanni talk about having a light saber in your pocket. Jokes aside, yes, it isn't a big deal, but the foldable technology addresses that to some extent.
Riley, the flip makes it easier to fit in the unreasonably tiny pockets you find on women’s trousers
Alternative Title: "Riley judges the most popular foldable, and the people that use it." - Harshly.
This is more of a comedic unboxing and review than it is a serious one... :D
Fashion industry: under no circumstances shall a woman carry things in fabric hewn out of their pants, SO SAITH THE LORD
Tech industry: fuck it let's just make a *folding screen* then
Most people buy the flip for flex mode. It's incredibly helpful for use with the cameras, watching video and multitasking. I sure as hell didn't pay as much as I did for my old flip 5g just so I could fold it smaller.
Once you live with the flip in your pocket, any other phone feels like putting a tablet in your pocket.
It's good for filming yourself because you can place it on a flat surface. Saw some parkour guy using it to film himself doing tricks.
ffs, i like mine, no more scratched screens, it fits my pockets better, the music controls are dope and I can stand it on my desk and car half folded, it rocks. Needs bigger battery but that seems to be addressed in the flip4

Some of us are adults.
If they put a more useful cover screen on and reduce the crease with a stronger screen I’m in. Great potential but not there yet.
When it's folded in half in your pocket it has a lesser chance of it sliding out when you sit down buddy 😂
Or you could wear jeans
you can answer calls with the phone folded, I do it a lot on the Flip 3 and it's quite useful.
I personally love my z flip 4 because I can tilt the screen to any position that I want for comfortable viewing angles

Good to see they finally almost made it work.
Why.
exactly the flipping just makes it a big rock in your pocket. a normal phone is so much better for pockets.
I didn't realize how amazing I was at putting things in my pockets to be able to nail it every time I use my z flip.
And yet a Fold 4 is half the thickness of an Airpod's case.
I know not everyone agrees, but the point is that there are people who actually do benefit from having a phone that flips in half, so don't hate on it just because you guys don't need it
The dbrand trust me bro warranty 😂
Foldables are a niche segment in the market. It’s not for everyone but there are people who would like it based on their usage.
He missed out on lots of potentially valid criticisms by stuffing the video with asinine ones.
He got real smooth with the unfolding with one hand by the end
I appreciate the honesty about the thickness and flipability. Sounds like a nitpick, but with how much we're used to the smartphone slab, you gotta convince me (and others) to get accustomed to a new feel.
If you're to do the clamshell design, old flip phones had the experience just right imo.
I've had a flip3 for a year and I love this thing. I admit that it's screen protector is bubbled across the crease, but the phone itself works great and so satisfying to just close the phone fully and hang up on people or brakes the doom scroll on Instagram.
I've also dropped it a bunch, and unfortunately threw/slid it across a parking lot and it was fine excluding minor scuffs and scrapes.
Riley, really? Did you forget that people are not all named Riley?
Ya know women's pockets are so small that smartphones sometimes don't even fit?
Ya know that some people prefer keepin their phone in the bag, where a flip phone might fit better?
