    Thanks for making this video. That lens was the kit lens that came with the Canon EF that my grandfather bought for me in 1976. I am planning to switch to Nikon Z mirrorless soon and will definitely get an adapter to try this piece of Canon glass on it.

    I have several versions of this lens also in Leica thread mount, it’s hard to take a bad picture with any version. There must be a reason why zillions of copies were sold. You made some great pictures as always.

    Had a Canon 50mm f1.4ssc, but the aperture was sticky and oily. I couldn't use it with the automatic modes on my Canon T70.
    I think, the 50mm F1.8 s.c. will do a similar job optically, and mechanically i love these older FD lenses.
    After studying some reviews including your excellent video i purchased a FD 50mm f1.8 s.c.

    Love this, I have 2 Canon 50mm’s (f1.2&f1.4) one that came with my Film camera A-1, and the other a garage sale find. The f1.8 looks lovely, it has very nice bokeh. Thanks for sharing this with us, I love the “classic “ look these lenses make, it’s easy to adapt to them any mirror less camera. And I agree these make much better sense than modern manual focus lenses 🙀

    There are a few reasons for buying newer manual lenses: No head start for fungus inside the lens, less potential for issues with oil on the aperture blades.
    Might have to take the one I inherited from my father apart and try to clean the oil off the aperture.

    Canon has done incredible work in imaging. As you have just seen on that legendary 50 1.8. On the other hand, I was so impressed by the IBIS and video features of lower-cost Lumix cameras that I never became a Canon videographer. 10 bit 4k30 and 4k60 8 bit full sensor on the G9 is worth being pulled away from Canon's great products.
    But I don't doubt they will continue pulling new tricks out of their hats, barring the cripple hammer. 🤣

    Nice review. But to be honest the 50/1.4 is the one to review. The difference in price is negligible on the used market between the two, and the 1.4 is just a brilliant lens. Clearly better than the 1.8, and debatably better than even the 1.2 L series. I have it with a cheap Pixco speed booster on a g85 and you end up with a functional f-stop of 1.0, and really stunning images.

  • @Sup90210
    @Sup90210 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There’s a lot of misinformation about SC versus SSC; both are multi coatings, it was really just a marketing thing in the 70’s as it was a cheap way to up-sale people and there was a big “coating” war between lens makers. Nothing a good lens hood can’t fix.

  • @kwchalky02

    I have one of the later versions. It's in mint condition. But I use it on MFT (either with or without speed booster) so not "standard" lens on that, as it gives me angle of view you would get with a lens of focal length 100mm (or 72mm using the booster) on FF camera. It's a nice option. Think I paid about £50 for mine. 👍
