So, there's that too. :) #silverlining #hatetrollsbutlovetrolls
That would be a really slow "blow by everyone". LOL You don't drive these like most folks drive jeeps... ie. spinning tires and slingin' mud. HMMWVs are much better suited to a slow crawl, in most cases.
Here is something you probably did not expect your videos to do. I use it for research for 3d modeling and later for animation. Vids like these help me a ton in reproducing it in photo realism. Thank you a lot for that.
While I get that... the HMMWV was designed back when the US expected the next war to be in Europe or USSR. It wasn't really designed to be a desert vehicle. That is just where they have gotten the most use in recent memory.
Those are the trucks I used. M1054a2 TOW. The traversing unit is a 68lb central piece that the m220 tow/m41 saber sight, launch tube and electrical connections/controls mounted to.
The weird ring next to the gunner's platform is a stowage mount for equipment that would be mounted on the turret during use. Sighting systems, and other equipment that would need to be brought into the vehicle and locked in place for transport.
Nice build. I can tell you enjoy and appreciate these monsters of a truck. My son is actually saving to get one by his senior year. He is in the tenth grade and always on the auction site. Keep it up. Thanks fir sharing.
Thanks. You mean the engines blew even WITH a 4 speed? I don't doubt that. But some folks run their 3 speeds way too fast, basically asking to dump parts along the highway.
I was a 3521, 3522 for most of my six years in the Marine Corps. I couldn't tell you which of the transmissions was behind the engines I had to rebuild but the final drives on military HMMWV's are not speced for high speed on road use. I have seen several on the internet that have had newer Duramax engines installed that out perform the older 6.2 and 6.5 liter engines on and off road.
LoL. Yeah. $15k, isn't it? I'll talk to them about it. We work with Brownells a lot. I've talked to another company about putting one on the HMMWV for a demo as well. Empty Shell.
Your traversing unit is for your TOW Gun it’s a Missile launcher you just bought a TOW gun truck you would have a collar that attaches to the gun and it goes on that traversing unit to store it when not in use. you would have a rack in the trunk area that held your Missiles that when you unlatched the trunk in the front the A-gunner can feed the gunner the Missiles while in the cabin rather than going out😃👍
They removed the tow missile rack during demil. I know the traversing mount held something with the TOW system, just haven't seen one actually in place on the mount. :)
Gear-Report.com yea not as impressive kinda is what it is but you should definitely get a up amored truck as well that held the machine guns and then you’ll have your own little CAAT (Combined Anti-amour Assault Team) pair😃 I like what you’re doing those trucks can go though a hell of a beating and keep going!
@@joncarlodagle Thanks. Since I have no use for or access to a TOW missile system, we are building this as an M1043 machine gun truck. We have the gun mount and chicken shield. Haven't started on the GPK yet. We have an airsoft M249 to play with and for display, but have access to various machine guns to mount for events. We try to walk a bit of a line in terms of keeping it outwardly military looking, while upgrading some of the creature comforts a bit so that it is more comfortable around town. :)
Ours never had seatbelts...lol However, the shoulder belt is removed while you’re expecting contact, while the lap belt keeps you in the vehicle. The doors always flew open.
I considered buying one of these just a few months ago. After seeing your video and adding up costs, I realize its just not that important to me to own one. Looks cools. Sounds cool. Im sure is fun to drive but also seems like it comes with all kinds of problems in paper work and repairs to deal with. Thanks for sharing.
These definitely aren't for the faint of heart. If you just want to drive it and aren't interested in working on it, then you either need deep pockets and a good HMMWV shop on speed dial, or to buy a model HMMWV and enjoy that one instead. :) I like them, but I like having something to work on. They definitely aren't for everyone.
Had the glass delamination issue with my Snatch land rover, on mine it was the binding agent between the glass and the perspex that clouded up. After taking the perspex off and letting the binding agent sit for a while it cleared up.
I have seen a few people solve this by removing the outer layers. I am hesitant to do this since the outer layers contain the shattered bits of glass in an accident or incident. I really don't want little glass fragments going everywhere.
I have a set of 4 nice seats that ill be ready to part with soon that fit in my hmmwv. Sliding rails, black cloth bucket seats. Cheap. Nothing wrong with them, just getting different seats If ur interested let me know.
Yep. And you might get a 1st Gen HMMWV with a 3 speed and soft top for 15k. But not a 3rd gen with a 4 speed and hard top. You'll be lucky to find one for 30k.
@@fraidykat some of the older, worn out, stripped 1st gen HMMWV auctions may go that cheap. But those older trucks are are getting a lot less frequent and harder to find. Then add a few thousand in taxes, fees, transportation costs. The newer HMMWVs like this one are selling for a lot more.

@@GearreportdotCom I worked at Hummer R and D in livonia Michigan and when they were upgrading the old m998 base hummers, and putting armor plating on the bodies, they found out their calculations were dead wrong and that the 998 suspension was not going to hold up to 10,000 lbs of extra weight. They blew out quite a few 998 suspensions before they figured out they had to upgrade the suspension too. Unfortunately 100's of the upgraded 998's were already shipped out because the army needed them badly and of course the 998 suspensions blew out in the field under the pressure of the weight, lol, and we had to ship the upgraded suspension parts to where they needed them. @@richardtorz2164 Interesting. I'm troubled that you are concerned with AMG losing $, but no mention of the lives lost when these HMMWVs failed in the field. :(
@@GearreportdotComYou are correct, i should have mentioned the loss of life, but was more concentrated on the original post about suspension failure of such heavy vehicles, that's all. No do not get wrong brother, the loss of life when equipment fails is so much greater than anything else, and i being a retired vet myself knows this all to well with seeing friends lost to equipment failures. That is something that is something that is of greater importance when designing anything, it needs to keep people safe. The neglect on Amg designers did cost lives, many lives, unfortunately that issue was never considered when the redesign came up and there was no acknowledgement by the company for those losses of life. i just didn;t address that issue with it because pretty much everybody knows what happens when people safety is not considered first and foremost when designing something.

Very cool project. Back in the 90's I saw one of these ex military humvees on the road here in Australia. It was LHD (Australia is RHD), had US plates on it and was being used to tour the world according to the map painted on the side of it. There were brand new civilian spec vehicles available here for a short time but were horrendously expensive and were way too big. I believe the Queensland Prison Service used them as perimeter patrol vehicles but they were not very reliable and didn't last too long. But anyway that's a real cool truck.

How much $... Honestly, I've been afraid to add the rest of the parts to my spreadsheet and get a real # for the total $ invested. However, I can say that the HMMWV, transportation from the auction site and complete turret assembly were covered by the sale fo the original Battlewagon. I've also been lucky that I've been able to buy some extra parts when I've found great deals and sell what I didn't need for more $, while still giving people good deals. So, I've spent $ on parts, but then made back a healthy % of it. Also, once the reviews are done I've also traded a few review guns for pricey HMMWV parts like the spare tire carrier. Now that most of the mechanical and structural additions are done (turret, engine running well, bumper) I'm moving to upgrades that brands send for reviews. So, there is a lot of value added to the Battlewagon 2.0 without cash changing hands. And I can't even begin to calculate the time invested. Yikes! How's that for an answer that isn't really an answer? lol
Oh my. Now THERE is a topic. I don't talk to Mrs Gear Report about the HMMWV. She HATED the original Battlewagon with a passion. It wasn't until I sold it and made some $ that she started to come around ... a little. Now she has seen how much I've been able to increase the value of this truck by getting it running and roadworthy, she actually suggested that I might think about doing it for a living. lol She still hates them, but I guess she figures if I'm going to do it anyway, why not make money at it. But no... not what I care to do for a living. I think dealing with some shoppers and customers would suck every bit of joy out of it for me.

@Shawn Glaze The H1 Hummers are like HMMWVs with nice interiors. Before the H2 and H3 the name "Hummer" wasn't an insult. The military called them Hummers back in the day. It used to bother me when someone called a Humvee a Hummer, but I have learned to relax because most people don't know that there is a difference. 😁👍😎🤓
The main difference between a hummer and a humvee is the humvee is a true bad ass vehicle. The hummer is a overpriced Chevy Silverado with a different body same chassis as the Silverado. The humvee has I believe a diesel now days probably a dirty max

What is the realistic cost of buying a surp hmmwv? Iv been watchin the auctions for m998s and see them sell for anywhere from $3k-$12k, but thats only part of the equation. Theres still shipping, insurance, paperwork, repairs.......
Yeah. That is why it is such a risk buying one from the Surplus auctions. This particular HMMWV was from the USMC and appears to have barely been used at all by the USMC. My first HMMWV was from the Army and served with the 82nd Airborne. I probably pushed it out the back of a C-141 at some point. LoL It had been beat to hell, but with proper maintenance was rather reliable and fun to own. And yes... I was a USAF aircraft mechanic before I was a loadmaster. I was thoroughly trained in reading military manuals and bending wrenches. Maintaining a HMMWV isn't really that bad once you understand the few things that are different than most other vehicles.
If you buy from the auction, then they can refund the sales tax once you pay your local sales tax. Or, some states will waive your state/local sales tax if you show proof that you already paid state/local tax on the purchase. ie. they can't double tax you on one purchase.
@@GearreportdotCom Bed liner can be used anywhere you choose to use it, I know of many hunting rigs and work trucks with the floor boards coated so it can be rinsed out with a hose and not rust out. The raptor system works great and can be layed down to any texture Your rig your call
People use bedliner like that. I agree. However, after reviewing MSDS sheets and discussions with a few people at different companies that make bedliner products they all say NOT to used beliner in enclosed passenger areas. The bedliner materials all continue to outgas toxic fumes when exposed to heat for years after initial curing. HMMWVs have aluminum bodies with almost zero insulation anywhere, and the drivetrain set up in the body. So, there is a lot more heat coming through the body than normal vehicles. Put all of that together and bedliner in the passenger areas of HMMWV is a bad idea. It isn't a good idea in other types of vehicles. but at least the other vehicles are designed differently so that heat coming through the body isn't quite so extreme as it is in HMMWVs. So, my resistance isn't a simple matter of "it's called bed liner... only use it in the bed". It is more of a health and safety concern based on MSDS data and discussions with manufacturers.
@@GearreportdotCom Were you thinking about using the dynamat Style insulation or the spray on Lizard skin? I have used the high temp dynamat on my SxS with good luck for heat shielding on the muffler / bed barrier. The Lizard skin I have not tried.

@@keithwittman4741 Motorized turrets are a fairly recent addition to HMMWVs. They had non-motorized turrets for 2 decades before SOME of them got motorized turrets. This was a TOW missile carrier and it had the manual turret, just like what is installed now.
There are 2x 12v batteries. You are correct that either battery could supply 12v. However, the start circuit in HMMWVs is VERY sensitive to voltage imbalance between the batteries. In 3 speed HMMWVs it is a bad idea to tap off on one battery since the 28v charging system can't accommodate the additional charge required by the low battery without overcharging the high battery. 4 speed HMMWVs with electronically controlled transmissions (like this one) have a separate 14v charging lead to compensate for the 12v drain the transmission controller puts on the aft battery. However, it is not designed to accommodate a heavy 12v load beyond that of the TCM. So, the preferred method of ensuring that 12v accessories don't cause battery imbalance is to feed them via a 24v to 12v converter. Clear as mud? lol

Let's look at this a bit more closely... I'm a fixed wing aircraft pilot. Never been much of a rotor head. BUT for the sake of easy vertical takeoff capabilities, I guess a Heuy would work. Not sure what "air support" I might need, but I have been lifted into a Huey via a forest penetrator on a winch line. So, I've got a bit of a nostalgic tie there to help justify it. Where you went off the rails is the A-37/T-37. Seriously? We had those at one of the tech schools I attended in the early 90s. I suppose any jet is cool, but you picked the most pedestrian option. At least step up to the T-38. Those are exponentially more badass. And let's be honest... if going the T-38 route, then an F-5 is really the way to go. Side note...I almost purchased a MIG 15 back in the mid-90s when I stumbled on a family of Russians refurbing and assembling a small batch of them in a hanger at one of the airports (Johnston County Airport in NC) I frequented when doing air search and rescue training. They were running out of cash and looking to flip one cheap to finance the build of the next few. I could have had that for $20k-$25k. Fortunately, I had the sense to walk away from that deal. I was a Crew Chief for the first few years of USAF service and knew a bit about maintaining military jets. The complexity and parts availability of that airframe would have been more than I could handle. I likely would have died in that plane. I mean... yeah. It would have been hella cool though. :) Another bit of trivia... the very first plane I EVER flew was a T-41 Mescalero out of the old Charleston AFB, SC. Planes are fun, but the HMMWV is a lot more practical. :)

I wanted to ask you if you know what it would take to get one capable of similar speeds, and if you thought it would be worth the effort and money. Thanks.
I've had this one up past 80mph on the interstate to keep up with traffic and it did great. BUT this truck was barely used and appeared to have never been abused offroad. Most HMMWVs I wouldn't think of going that fast until all of the steering, suspension and brake components were checked and likely replaced. Any slop in those systems will cause big issues when you get going that fast. 96mph. Beats me. I've never looked into getting one that fast, as I don't see the point. They aren't designed for that.
@@ferdinanddimayuga2269 Duramax, LS swap, etc. There are various options to replace the engine and transmission. My point is that even though it CAN be done, I'm not convinced that it SHOULD be done. :)
IF you get a HMMWV up to 86 MPH it will feel like you’re entering the Earth’s atmosphere! They are not made to go that fast. I got one up to about 80 when I was stationed in Germany.
@Moe Green LoL. This truck had no doors when I picked it up. I already had the doors and the bulletproof glass was delaminating in the driver's door. I replaced it with a bit thinner glass for now, because the thicker ballistic glass isn't quite as easy to find at a good price.

You don't drive these like most folks drive jeeps... ie. spinning tires and slingin' mud. HMMWVs are much better suited to a slow crawl, in most cases.

The close up of the sump horror was .... life transforming.
And almost heart-attack inducing!
You were right about getting the overdrive transmission. However, I can attest to rebuilding many engines that were driven hard and fast.

If I recall correctly, that circular mount-looking thing by the gunners step is the pedestal for a TOW rocket launcher mount.
Correct! More correct it was designed specifically for the "TOW 2 "launcher.

Great done footage at 9:59
How much $$$ do you have in this project if I may ask?
Yikes!
How's that for an answer that isn't really an answer? lol

Humvee not a Hummer don't insult it. A Hummer is a civilian tinker toy not worth a damn.
This will explain the situation and different options to buy one: gear-report.com/what-does-a-surplus-hmmwv-cost-how-to-buy-a-humvee
The main difference between a hummer and a humvee is the humvee is a true bad ass vehicle. The hummer is a overpriced Chevy Silverado with a different body same chassis as the Silverado. The humvee has I believe a diesel now days probably a dirty max
,,, hauled many of these, and one set of the first light armament. The 24 volt starting is amazing. It will sit there cranking very fast, and put out these consistent, little puffs of heated, compressed, light grey, fuel and air puffs, But they are not combusted. One wiff of ether, and she lights. Or use or fix the glow plugs .
Yikes! Ether is no bueno for diesels.
,,, so your on an Army base, you already have one guy from the motor pool, that can't start it, its cranking, very fast, it's got fuel, you appear to be miles from the motor pool, you have 2 more to load, believe me a whiff of ether didn't hurt it, OR the other two .
@@rolandtamaccio3285 wd40 is a safe alternative. Ether washes lube off of cylinder walls and is too volatile for high compression engines. Ether is a great way to blow up a diesel engine.
History of this purchase is detailed here: gear-report.com/hmmwv-info-battlewagon-2-m1045a2-humvee-from-the-us-marine-corps

I think the slantbacks look cool, but I hate how much truck bed space is sacrificed by the low top. And there is no rear window AT ALL.

I am assuming that it didn't run or start in the auction. Was that pretty risky feeling? Looking at some postal trucks on Govplanet. Some don't start and some don't have keys. So kind of wonder if it's a simple fix or if there is something seriously wrong with it.
It is always a risk, even if it runs. Just assume it will need an engine and transmission. If it doesn’t, then you win.

Took some work, but it ran very well
@@jeffcress2413 So what would you have done if it did need a new engine and/or transmission?

@@GearreportdotCom The auction to get the van I want is like a 1,000 miles away so if I win then I am trying to prepare for the worst possible outcome. It makes it a little more challenging considering I just can't bring it home. One person in a Reddit forum said worst case scenario I could try to sell it as scrap.
Thinking of getting it towed to a nearby Walmart getting a part, changing all the fluids, filters and trying to start or just taking it to a shop for inspection and hoping they don't say, oh the engine is blown or transmission is shot.

Man this makes me want to get more Humvees.
Need to figure out how to buy them without paying that stupid out of state use and sales tax.
If you buy from the auction, then they can refund the sales tax once you pay your local sales tax. Or, some states will waive your state/local sales tax if you show proof that you already paid state/local tax on the purchase. ie. they can't double tax you on one purchase.
If you don't mind me asking how much did that Hummer cost you at that place. I would like to get one.

The answer to your question is detailed in here: gear-report.com/hmmwv-info-battlewagon-2-m1045a2-humvee-from-the-us-marine-corps
How much did you purchase it fir
It wasn’t cheap...
Where did you get your turret? And how much was it? Thanks
Turrets are like fight club...
That thing is so epic!
Thanks. You should see our latest HMMWV. :)
Now you just need to armor it.
I drove one these with the 40mm grenade launcher.
If only I knew where to get pats for it. ;)

Awesome. Maybe you should buy it.
Where do you get parts for HMMVEE?

Let me know when you start lining the unit with bed liner so I can buy stocks in Raptor
Not gonna happen. Bedliner is an exterior product. Not putting it in the bed, since it is interior. DEFINITELY not coating the exterior in that crap.
@@GearreportdotCom Bed liner can be used anywhere you choose to use it, I know of many hunting rigs and work trucks with the floor boards coated so it can be rinsed out with a hose and not rust out.
The raptor system works great and can be layed down to any texture
Your rig your call
We did a project with lizard skin on our first Humvee. If you go to our website you will find a couple of articles about that project. SpaceIt worked amazingly. For this one we started a project with Kool Mat, but have not made much progress since we listed the Humvee for sale.
Can you actually get plates for it? I noticed you didn't have one on there, but I thought that may just be for the video to keep your tag from being online.
The tag is in the vehicle. Haven't decided how to mount it yet.
@@GearreportdotCom sweet for some reason I thought you couldn't register these old trucks for on road use but I'm glad to hear it's not a trail only machine!

Nope. The yard is noisey as they are demil'ing vehicles 20 yards away. I muted some of the really loud work noises.
@@GearreportdotCom ohh ok cool
Just curious what's your intent with these Humvees?....i served 2 tours in Afghanistan and Iraq for the 3rd ID in 2003 and hated to ride in them....the noisiest roughest ride...but built like a tank!
The intent is just to enjoy them. I loaded them in C-141s and pushed a few out in flight when we were doing airdrops... but never got to ride in one back then. Though they were cool and always wanted one.
Also, I've kept this one military looking thus far for use in parades. Might start adding some creature comforts and other exterior mods soon to make it more practical.

Try he HMMWV has run great for over 4000 miles since this video was made.
What is the average cost to buy one
Good question. There are a LOT of variables in this... year, configuration, condition, location, purchase source, etc. Average might be anywhere from $6-8k for a non-running parts truck up through $50k+ for a fully restored and/or modified HMMWV.
gear-report.com/what-does-a-surplus-hmmwv-cost-how-to-buy-a-humvee
Listen people everyone can do whatever they want with your money. But for $5000 you can go on almost any government auction and buy almost any Humvee in almost any condition even with very little to zero engine hours on them (not used).
Post some links to late-model, running HMMWVs available for purchase today with full working turrets for $5k. I'll buy every one of them right now. Hell. I'd buy every running late model HMMWV without turrets or doors for $5k each. I would even buy late model non-running HMMWVs for $5k each. You even can't get an A2 HMMWV rolling chassis to your door for $5k... with no engine or driveline.
*Spoiler* You won't post any links because if you really do search for a link you'll find the best you can do are some auction listings with a STARTING price of $5k. Log into the auction site and look at what the CLOSING price on those HMMWVs is... it aint $5k. Not even close. LoL
But what do I know. I've only been doing this for a few years. :)
Lol good luck with that.
You do know that traversing assembly is for a motorized turret maybe for the TOW mount cause I don’t want to have my head out there!!!
Good to know
The TOW system goes on it ,when travelling. Lower ,and optics. -0352, Marine TOW gunner, and M.T. Nco.
@@keithwittman4741 Thanks for the info.
With out the motorized turret, if you had the tow system up there 400lbs of equipment would spin itself to the low side ! You had to know that Before you pulled the handle for the turret lock!
@@keithwittman4741 Motorized turrets are a fairly recent addition to HMMWVs. They had non-motorized turrets for 2 decades before SOME of them got motorized turrets. This was a TOW missile carrier and it had the manual turret, just like what is installed now.
Good work.
Thanks!
What's the average $ to get one. Retired and love a project like this
Pretty big range of potential costs. gear-report.com/what-does-a-surplus-hmmwv-cost-how-to-buy-a-humvee/
Is there only one battery? If your using 2 12v batteries to make 24v and tap off the first of the 2 you will get only 12v out.
Clear as mud? lol
Did the doors come with it or did you had to order them?
Did not come with doors. I got those doors for my prior HMMWV and kept them for this truck.
Where can I purchase one? If you don’t mind sharing the info thanks in advance.

What's next??
Your very own UH1 HUEY helicopter for your own air support ??
If done right , you could tow it on a trailer behind the Hummer. :)
If you have deep pockets you could find a classic Cessna A-37/T-37 Dragonfly jet trainer to cruise across the sky with.
That sounds like an awesome plan!
Another bit of trivia... the very first plane I EVER flew was a T-41 Mescalero out of the old Charleston AFB, SC.
Planes are fun, but the HMMWV is a lot more practical. :)
I read your post on HUMVEE speeds from your website. I saw this HUMVEE rebuild from a pretty reputable company that claims their builds can go up to 96 mph.
I believed you are referring to humvee with engine replaced with duramax.
If it is well maintained and wheels balanced it is no big deal.
does the turret area seal so it doesn't drip when it rains?

Not much lately. Changed oil and put new glass in the driver's window today.
@Moe Green LoL. This truck had no doors when I picked it up. I already had the doors and the bulletproof glass was delaminating in the driver's door. I replaced it with a bit thinner glass for now, because the thicker ballistic glass isn't quite as easy to find at a good price.
