Hi Guys quick question what runs cooler a super charger or a turbo intercooler on the hummer? Im trying to work out how I can get my girl to run cooler alot cooler when driving through soft sand for long periods . Cheers for any advice.
Howdy! I would think a turbo will run your engine cooler since it's not "running the engine" like a supercharger would. I do know there are H1s and HMMWVs that have been supercharged successfully. Here's an article on supercharging the H1: www.flashoffroad.com/Diesel/supercharger/supercharge.html An intercooler is probably the best way to help cool the engine. Rubberduck4x4 and Predator Motorsports make one for the H1, I believe they buy you a reduction of 70+ degrees in intake temps. A small thing you can do: If you're going at slower speeds I'd suggest putting a couple radiator fans on the radiator stack. They will only cool at slower speeds. When the H1 or HMMWV go faster the fans actually don't get much air at all. Just add a toggle switch so you can turn the fan on and off when you're in Low Lock going slowly through elements, I'd say 20MPH or less they'd be effective. Another is removing restrictions from your exhaust. The stock muffler is known to create a massive amount of heat build-up. Take it off and add a high-flow muffler (or no muffler if you don't mind the noise, I did it on my 6.5 NA, truck is very happy). The more your truck can breath, the happier it will be. Temp-wise just keep it around 190 if you can. 200 is fine, 210 is alright, 220 it's time to start thinking about slowing down. 230 and up for long periods of time is asking for trouble. As a side note, when I did I road trip on the hottest day of the year (128 degrees F) from Long Beach to Houston, every stop we made I was finding a self-serve car wash to spray out the radiator from all the dust. I'm sure it cooled the engine as well, but I was more worried about the dust and sand (like you're driving in) building up and causing heat issues. Trip was great, no issues...except for very tired drivers. Let us know what you do! I plan to supercharge my 6.5 NA in the next few years.
