I am also into the mess. I find the difference between maximalist and just messy isn't the amount of stuff, but ensuring that all the stuff has a spot, like all of the stuff has a space you designate it ❤
I know there are always better and bigger houses (the grass is always greener on the other side), but your appartment right now is already so unique and pretty! Many would envy you for what you currently have, don't forget that :)
Just fyi I’m an interior designer and a film set dresser, and we wouldn’t call this ‘mess’ at all! We would describe these types of interiors as warm and layered
I cannot even explain how much I needed this video. I'm OBSESSED! As someone who looks to you and your interiors for inspiration, seeing your inspo was so helpful and delightful
Yay! I was missing hearing your thoughts on interiors! your home decor vids used to be my favorite & were hugely inspirational in impacting my own interior design evolution
When it comes to the question of too little or too much stuff, I think it's helpful to assess the visual balance of the room Here are some tips I've collected if anyone's interested: - How much white space is there? This usually refers to the walls as they are commonly white and provide balance to the contents of a room (it's good to give the eye a break but too much and the room feels more minimal/stark) - Large items, grounded items (ie: blocky couch on the floor), colorful items, textured items... these things command more attention and as a result seem to take up more visual space (if you have high ceilings you can get away with more, it's about balancing out the attention these items command). On the other hand, glass and other reflective surfaces feel lighter and can often seem invisible (picture a mirrored dining table) - If it starts feeling like there's too much stuff in the room for your taste... corral small bits into bowls and groups of three, swap a bulky/heavy piece for something spindly/wiry (that's why the hanging pendant on the wire works well next to the floor lamp), consider the amount of attention grabbing color which includes darks - A lot of principles of fashion translate to interior... Think about whether you want a multicolored outfit (where your eye doesn't focus on either piece and doesn't rest but moves from one piece to the next). This same way you can guide someone's eye throughout a space by using items which command visual space OR Do you wear a neutral outfit with one pop of color to which your eye is then naturally directed to If you choose to go all neutral, remember to vary the visual weight using texture and bulk/shape of pieces Long story short-er, if you focus on adding dimension, guiding the eye, and balancing the visual weight of items in your home you should arrive at a pleasing space. Have fun, don't stress! No one gets it right on the first try, so be willing to buy and resell until you're happy or want a new throw pillow c: And keep functionality top of mind!
btw the “not enough vs too much stuff” idea is basically just about balance size and contrast, ie, how things feel relative to other things. for example a small bowl on a table might make a table feel big or too empty. a big painting on a small wall can make the space feel taller or fuller.
Here is my advice re cobalt blue rug: Unless your friends are interior designers and also have houses you covet, don't listen to their design advice. EVERYBODY has different taste. I think you should get the rug and if you don't end up liking it, roll it up and sell it. However, I have blue and dark brown wood in my bedroom and it looks amazing, I think the rug would look fabulous in that room. In the event you're not ready to purchase it, get some cobalt blue accents for your room like pillows, a chair, a tablecloth for your coffee table, and experiment with seeing small pops of blue in the room. Enjoy your house!!!!!! Don't let others dictate what you should/shouldn't do with your own space.
to test rugs what you need to do is find a flat top sheet in the color you want your rug and lay it out it'll really give you a good idea if its giving!
i love the idea of a giant cobalt blue rug!!!!! but i also think the sofa cover would be super cool in blue too, and then the daybed covered in some sort of olive yellowish green or even in red strips would be bomb
I couldn’t agree more! Maybe it’s just because I’m a naturally messy person, but I love any home where you can feel the life of the person overflowing throughout the space, even if the person weren’t present. What’s the point of creating a home space where you’re too afraid to live and be human? Life is messy people!
Love watching your design breakdowns! You could use the RIT custom dye recipes to DIY the cobalt sheets! It would be a great way to test various blues- or other colors for your space.
I think go cobalt sheets for sure. Do a more neutral rug with fun shapes in back or dark brown. I think the cobalt will sink a room if that makes sense. This was fun!
I have a cobalt blue and yellow vintage 70s rug, sounds horrific but honestly it's my pride and joy, I get so many compliments on it. Always go with the fun and weird choices!
looking forward to where this is going for you and your nice place, go for what you are feeling and not what others say. You will live in the space and a rug can always be replaced too, it’s not something built in. Yes to more colors 🙂
To demo the blue rug idea you could take a bunch of cobalt (or close to) poster paper together and lay it like a rug in the room. Just to see what the space looks like with that much color.
I love how you're able identify and vocalize what it is you like about these different inspo pics (and how you made the boards public so that I can go spend like two hours looking at all of them later lol)
A gabbeh blue rug would be perfect in your living space!! With all of the brown it would fit nicely. Also, would be interested to see the coffee table centered on the fireplace with the daybed and couch on either side. That would add a space for some type of table or design moment behind the couch-which I’ve been loving atm.
So I just binged watched your videos from the beginning, I just found your Chanel, and honestly you changed so much throughout the videos, even though fighting depression, it is obvious that leaving the sustainability and veganism behind also opened space for you to talk and learn about other stuff. But watching this video it is clear you’re really good at decoration/interior design, colors and things that goes off that. Maybe you should give this more thought because girl you’re good at that, I can see you’re really home when you’re talking about your decor choices, I mean I’m just expressing an idea of course! Like idk if you know Alexandra Gardner, but she started making over her friends apartments and posting on TH-cam and she’s awesome, maybe you could try that one day! Good luck!
If you keep returning to the cobalt blue rug in your mind, do it! your friends mean well but I think your intuition might be onto to something… I’m thinking it will work too, please update us if you make a decision either way 😊💙
Please do share if you end up making a light fixture for the room! I've been thinking of doing something similar with fabric so would love to see your process!
loved this! i agree that the rug might be a bit too much for that room i think it would disturb the natural light/feel and greens out of the window a little also i'm wondering if your furniture would sit well with it. even Just seeing your home in the background makes me want to jump in the screen, such a beautiful space
In Sweden we have this unique word "lagom" which means not too little and not too much, just the right amount. It would describe your furniture thesis perfectly! You simply need a lagom amount of furniture :))
You are SO RIGHT about everything! About the blue rug: I don't think there's a giant risk of it being too much because you could always layer other rugs on top. But I personally think a big blue piece would be nicer as a couch or other piece of furniture that has more body? Or is off the floor a little bit? I'm not sure why and how to argue that though 😅
Loved this! And loved the idea of a big bright rug! Personally I probably would've choosen between the bright red and the cobalt blue as my choice as a pop colour though. Feel like they might be competing otherwise?
I’m so excited to see how it all turns out! Where did you get your kitchen peel n stick tiles from? I have been wanting to use some in my kitchen but I want to make sure I choose some that are good quality!
I think when we are in a good spot emotionally our houses are also clutter free. Like a spot for everything and intentionally putting things in that spot. I have learned this as I get older.
You should look at the garden Majorelle in Morocco as an inspo with cobalt blue. It was the house and the garden from Yves Saint Laurent with cobalt blue, brigh yellow and lots of greenery. The best color combo. Maybe you can do this in your garden.
Your inspo photos overlap a bit with mine! I got a few blue things a few years ago but I can't tell if I'm sick of it now. Your home has much more character than mine, though!
Don't worry about appealing to the masses, the old world is crumblin so as is perfectionism and workaholism. I'm messy AF too, I don't need to fit into an old construct when the old one is crumbling . Self acceptance
wow as i typed out that suay shop just reposted someone who dyed their aging/worn sheets into a bright cobalt blue, you talked about it. hope you did it!
hiii what brand were your peel and stick kitchen tiles and would you recommend it? i’m considering doing it in mine because i can’t standddd looking at the tiles and yours look great 😍
Does it bother you that your most popular videos with the most views (over a mil) are both with images of you in the shower...does that gross you out? I was just searching for one of your past videos and noticed that! The videos directly below those in popularity are ones with you in underwear on your bed...I would just be skeeved out if it were me 😅
Love your style! Could you tell me the visual site you’re making a collage on at the end? I’m also an adhder and visual learner, so any tools like that are really helpful. I also agree with the messy perspective. My family’s home was always very clean yet cozy but there’s something about a little mess that makes it feel like home. ✨
YES ! it's my favorite app - it's called Freeform ! If you have a macbook i think it will download but I think you can get for your phone too! It's so good for adhd and being a visual person! and I love being able to just drag things around and have an endless space to do so! def recommend!
DO THE GIANT BLUE!!! blue and brown are such a dream pairing. The way it will look w the exposed wood ceiling will be ridiculous.
I disagree about the rug, I think the cobalt blue will be muted by a white couch and wood. It would be a delightful pop of color, imo.
a jenny bourn and paige wassel collab is something we all want and need!!!
Paiges own home is very mediocre to be honest. She should take notes from Jenny
@@sealife13 I never thought I would see a comment like this... I think Paige's home lacks character and is just kinda... eh.
@@foxwilliamulderhuh?😭
I am also into the mess. I find the difference between maximalist and just messy isn't the amount of stuff, but ensuring that all the stuff has a spot, like all of the stuff has a space you designate it ❤
Please do the blue rug. I love that idea!!
I know there are always better and bigger houses (the grass is always greener on the other side), but your appartment right now is already so unique and pretty! Many would envy you for what you currently have, don't forget that :)
I think the blue rug would be legendary
I looove the architectural features of your home the wood and the windows look so nice
Just fyi I’m an interior designer and a film set dresser, and we wouldn’t call this ‘mess’ at all! We would describe these types of interiors as warm and layered
You should totally try to make some cyanotype prints! Either art for your walls or could make some pillowcases with it.
JENNNYYYY this is EXACTLY what we needed

Hi jenny :) trust your intuition and buy yourself a blue rug!!! It's gonna be so beautiful
btw the “not enough vs too much stuff” idea is basically just about balance size and contrast, ie, how things feel relative to other things. for example a small bowl on a table might make a table feel big or too empty. a big painting on a small wall can make the space feel taller or fuller.
your home looks so good already!!! that light!! i wish
also, it makes me so happy every time you mention Portugal 🥺

blue rug.. and red daybed cover!!!
one should be in a pattern tho!
the beauty in mess sounds similar to the concept of wabi sabi (the appreciation of the imperfect)
i love the idea of a giant cobalt blue rug!!!!! but i also think the sofa cover would be super cool in blue too, and then the daybed covered in some sort of olive yellowish green or even in red strips would be bomb

I have a giant blue rug, and tbh it looked a bit too much, but I layered a deep red oriental rug on top of it and it really works now...
I love your boards and I’m taking some inspo for my place which feels empty. Thanks for this video. Love your style.
i adore you
looking forward to where this is going for you and your nice place, go for what you are feeling and not what others say. You will live in the space and a rug can always be replaced too, it’s not something built in. Yes to more colors 🙂
Do the blue! I just put a big cobalt blue rug in my babies nursery and it looks great. Also Etsy does totally take returns
The colbat blue rug would be beautiful! Go for it! Those bold colors would look so nice.
To demo the blue rug idea you could take a bunch of cobalt (or close to) poster paper together and lay it like a rug in the room. Just to see what the space looks like with that much color.
We a basically the same person 🤓 I have like 50% of the same pins and working on my home is my main activity haha
bright blue reminds me of the Mexican use of color, pale blue feels very US east coast in a great way. both so pretty
I love how you're able identify and vocalize what it is you like about these different inspo pics (and how you made the boards public so that I can go spend like two hours looking at all of them later lol)
I loved how you styled your last place and I can´t wait to see how you decorate this one 💙

Seeing your Pinterest inspo, I'm just like "yep, that's Jenny!!!"
I actually think a cobalt or dark blue rug would look great in the living room. It would play nicely off of the wood ceiling
I’m super into cobalt blue rn too and I say go for a pop of blue somewhere!! I LOVE the idea of a blue rug. I think that would look sick
I just redid my bedroom with blue as the theme. Go for it, sis!!!!
Yes to the blue rug or daybed cover 😍🥰
If you keep returning to the cobalt blue rug in your mind, do it! your friends mean well but I think your intuition might be onto to something… I’m thinking it will work too, please update us if you make a decision either way 😊💙
Ooooh that part about allowing ppl into your homes in their natural state being more intimate is so true! 🤯
Cobalt blue rug would totally work...just choose a more muted, deeper toned cobalt and it'll just be so cozy and refreshing.
get the blue rug!!! sounds beautiful and i think it would work sooo well with the white and the wood!
and then I would choose a softer colour for the daybed! maybe a butter yellow or a rosy pink?
OMG Jenny, Have you been to horses? The restaurant on sunset??? YOU WOULD LOVE THEIR DECOR !!! also food is really good!
Please do share if you end up making a light fixture for the room! I've been thinking of doing something similar with fabric so would love to see your process!

i think as long as the value of the blue of the rug matches the rest of the spaces it will work!
In Sweden we have this unique word "lagom" which means not too little and not too much, just the right amount. It would describe your furniture thesis perfectly! You simply need a lagom amount of furniture :))
"I'm going to try to not use the word vibe excessively" so real
go for the cobalt rug!!!!!!!!! it will look so cute

i think you'd love the house/work of french sculptor Valentine Schlegel !
would love to know more about how you source your artwork and jugs and knick knacks
I agree do the cobalt rug
Loved this! And loved the idea of a big bright rug! Personally I probably would've choosen between the bright red and the cobalt blue as my choice as a pop colour though. Feel like they might be competing otherwise?
remember that they arrange the room for the photography

oooh i spy madre linen in the kitchen :-)
Team blue rug every day!!! I want a blue rug now
Yay for a 20 min vid!
Don't worry about appealing to the masses, the old world is crumblin so as is perfectionism and workaholism. I'm messy AF too, I don't need to fit into an old construct when the old one is crumbling . Self acceptance
i love this comment and ive been referencing it in my head for the past couple of days. thank you for the reminder
GIRL DO THE BLUE YES
wow as i typed out that suay shop just reposted someone who dyed their aging/worn sheets into a bright cobalt blue, you talked about it. hope you did it!
Bemz design does gorgeous linen sofa covers (mainly for Ikea sofas but they do custom too)
A CHAIR OUT OF THE PAPER PULP ! gagged
Let them dye you some more white fabric cobalt blue and you can sew throwcushion covers for your white/creme couch :)
Highly recommend paige wassel! She's on TH-cam and has amazing taste!
Can I write you a letter? You inspire me so much. Thank you for making the zine and all the things you do and all that you are!
loveeeee this omg but question how do you get that "shop the look" section on pinterest that's super handy and it doesn't come up w me
hiii what brand were your peel and stick kitchen tiles and would you recommend it? i’m considering doing it in mine because i can’t standddd looking at the tiles and yours look great 😍
i have a leather couch from costco and it's ripped so i want a new one...i would love one from anthropologie but it's pricey so i'm saving up
Jenn, did you upgrade your camera? It looks great!
Would it be too odd to test the cobalt blue rug by tiling the floor with blue construction paper??
Wait dumb question but what app did you use to see all the bathroom rug options together on one plane
For the record I was PRO cobalt rug
I think you should swap the couch and day bed. IMO. ❤ your content.
Does someone know where her necklace and top is from 🫶🏾
Color coordinated clutter.
♥
Where’d you go? Miss seeing you here the past month
thanks for thinking of meeeee
