God this game was a pleasant surprise when I was a kid. I saw it at Toys R Us during my yearly Birthday visit, bought it, but accidentally forgot it at the checkout lane. When my Dad went back to pick it up, they accused him of stealing it, and kept him at the lane while they reviewed the tape to ensure he wasn't trying to attempt theft. I remember playing it on the way home while my Dad raged at me from the front seat. I ignored him of course. And I JUST realized that the Stage 1 theme is a jauntier, happy version of Wicked Child...all these years, and I never noticed.
Gosh, you ignored him 'cause today I'm the one feeling bad about it 😂 But anyway, the song you're talking about is actually Beginning from the first level of Dracula's Curse.
@@KaibaSeto. I paid attention to him for the first 5 minutes, but after a while it got ridiculous, so yeah, I tuned him out. It wasn't my fault, it got so bad my Stepmom was telling him to relax. Dad was like that. Besides, what's it matter to you? I was a kid.
+cannonfodder4000 i'm always about holding out for cheaper deals, KD had been on my bucket list for years but i was never able to find it for cheap. so i bit the bullet and finally scooped it up off ebay for something like $60. great game though, totally worth it!
I actually love the fact you take ample time to not only talk about the music in our games in ways besides "THIS MUSIC IS GOOD I LIKE IT" or "THIS IS MUSIC IS BAD I HATE IT" whilst presenting them as objective statements instead of opinions, but that you do show your obvious love for what you're talking about on top of providing plenty of information on the composer. Cus, man, if you like something, like it! Never be ashamed of showing enthusiasm about VGM or taking joy in discussing it at length, because it gets the viewers interested, and it's always more fun for us if you're having fun to. Hell, I may not always agree with your VGM opinions (although so far, you and I seem to have similar tastes and likes), but shit if you don't make talking about tunes I'm not feeling as much interesting. Basically, keep doin what you do, Derek~
Just wanted to say that I completely love your reviews man :) I've been watching you since the HVGN days and have never stopped enjoying your videos! You've also introduced me to so many wonderful games including this one :) Thanks so much for your hard work. I, like so many suffer from mental and physical health issues which can make things tough some times but often when I'm feeling low your videos and reviews find a way to cheer me up, I can't tell you how much that means to me :) Sorry for rambling on, but yeah, cheers man! From the U.K :)
Kid Dracula also appeared in a couple of Parodius games, the parodic variations on Gradius. He's simply god tier as he can shoot powerful homing kunai backwards and forward. To play as him is of great help in highest difficulty levels =)
Very nice episode, Derek. Interestingly enough, Kid Dracula was referenced much later on in the Castlevania franchise in the Wii fighting game Castlevania Judgment (a game that doesn't deserve anywhere near as much hatred that it gets). The final boss of that game, the Time Reaper, says that he comes from "10,000 years hence" & was sent to the past by Galamoth/Garamoth to alter the timeline. Kid Dracula, technically, takes placed 10,000 years into the future, meaning that the final boss of Judgment was a super-powered version of Death from Kid Dracula.
This video is old I know, but Alucard is a dhampir, the son of a vampire and a human. I guess Dracula’s reproductive system kept going even after going vampire.
I like to think that after Dawn of Sorrow, Alucard he embraced his heritage, eventually fathering a child. That child would then be Kid Dracula. Considering what he says in the Good Ending, it wouldn't really surprise me.
As a lifelong castlevania fan, I only found out about this game in the past few years. And I've only gotten to play it since castlevania anniversary collection on Xbox one. And I have been so pleasantly surprised at what a little gem it! Also, how could he be anyone else but Alucard?!?!
Just announced to be in the Castlevania bundle coming to the Switch. I had played, or seen all the other ones. This I had to look up. Thanks for the review.
Literally the ONLY complaint I could think about with the last video (Faxanadu review) was how empty the background was behind Derek. It was just the white wall with nothing on it. Now I can't even say that. Favorite reviewer on TH-cam, he's too flippin' good.
The tune that opens the review is an 8-bit rendition of Golliwog's Cakewalk, isn't it? I remember you featuring it on an episode of Retro Beats and having a mildly giddy moment at the thought that a Konami OST would quote Debussy. Mr. Itoh did such a great job reworking it, too; it's hard not to bounce along with it.
We can only hope that this game and Belmont's Revenge get on the eShop for Halloween but with the way things are going with Konami that will not be the case sadly. Great review as always
Damn I didn't know there was a GB version! I played the famicom version A LOT when I was still over there, but if I knew there was a sequel to it, I've definitely played it!!
Just played through Symphony of the Night and realized you can have little bat buddies as familiars, kinda like how in this game you have bat buddies as an attack. That to me is case closed, gotta be Alucard!! Even though yeah vamps don't age lol
I still have this one. One ting left out of this review is the manual. The whole thing is written in a tongue in cheek style that is very funny. All the enemies are given funny names. Phyllis Driller. The Spirit of the Last Fried Chicken You Ate. The Illegal Alien From Planet X. The Trout tat would not die. It has a bit of an earthworm jim vibe.
Just wanted to let you know, and I'm not sure if it's a high priority, but the link to the three Castlevania Gameboy videos you mention at 11:30 isn't there. Love your videos Uncle Derek, this one's a great one, loved it when it came out and honestly should be up there with your more popular content
I know it's not a retro game, but a retro inspired indie game, but one of the consistently best soundtracks I have ever heard, is Gunman Clive 2 on 3DS and Wii U. Absolute ear candy..
Stop Skeletons From Fighting I was. After playing the first one there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted more, and even if you weren't wishing for one, I can still highly recommend it for the soundtrack and the very fun gameplay.
If you play Dillion's Rolling Western 2, at the beginning of the game, you don't have any of your upgrades because you pawned them off because you thought you'd never need them.
Having played the original Famicom version, I can safely say it's much more rough experience than the Game Boy sequel-make, though it is (at least when I got it) a far cheaper alternative to seeking a physical copy for the Game Boy version. Either way, it's worth picking up and trying it out.
I have a decent gameboy collection. I wouldn't say this game is worth checking out if you have to pay $50 to $60 for it on eBay. The gameplay just isn't there. if u can find it for around $15 then it's a must try. I think emulation would be the best route for this game
If we're getting super nerdy, the first stage music in both Kid Dracula games is a remix of Beginning from Castlevania III Dracula's Curse. Garamoth actually is a boss in Symphony of the Night in the reverse catacombs... and he's tough! To be honest though, I'm kind of pissed that Konami/Nintendo stopped putting Virtual Console games on the 3DS. Just one Castlevania from gameboy, and a few other throw away titles. Maybe if the NX is portable they're saving it all for that, but somehow I doubt it. I'm tired of classics disappearing and having to spend a small fortune on rare carts, leaving the final option emulation as the only choice to play great games like this!
Cool video. Also, and you may have tried this, one thing I've used to find pictures of Japanese artists or personalities that are elusive is going onto google.jp, searching for the person in question, and using a web-translater to go through the results. Vampires don't age, but they might mature from youth. Especially since Alucard is a dhampir, only half vampire. Otherwise, he would have stayed an infant his whole life.
I've always wanted to know about this game, but never really found any big information on it, other that this series being where Galamoth from Symphony of the night comes from. Kid Dracula is 100% Alucard. Why? We know Dracula was turned into a vampire as an adult . Alucard was given birth to as a vampire and aged accelerated, but still grew up as a vampire from childhood. Hence he’s the only option. Yay in depth Castlevania lore knowledge😂
Huh, had this as a child. Not bad but it was very short and VERY easy. Probably one out of like only two, three Gameboy games I had that I could actually finish. And I was plain out atrocious at them.. :)

Kid Dracula vs the kkk
how is no one else talking about that!

Vampires don't age past a certain point but it's clear that Alucard would have had to have aged, he definitely wasn't born as a fully grown man.
