  • It's been a minute but I've seen a lot of stuff happening in the music gear world. NAMM 2024 wrapped up (I didn't attend) but I saw some cool gear. Alpha Theta dropped to very similar products that InMusic brand made popular. Someone leaked a picture of the new MPC hitting the market soon.

Yeah NAMM was lackluster, but S far as AKAI, I mean I don’t really know what we want as a community lol. The MPC LIVE 2 and the One are super dope. They need to come with 3.0 already and also need to come up with different colors for the possible mpc 37 keys. Black or Retro. That red is so gaudy smh

I think Namm is good for people to meet in person that you see online on this platform. I hate that I missed namm in its hayday prior to 2020. To be honest, I'm getting a little tired of the pattern of Leak, Influencer Video, than Release. (full disclosure I was a part of that cycle myself) If the company has not learned by now to keep its products under wrap by now, every leak is intentional. It's like I'm ready for something different. Something to bring the excitement back.

I think groove boxes and midi keyboards have hit there peak except for adding small features such as memory and work flow improvements. But overall I think people tend to lust after the idea of what could come next and don't master the current gear they have.

There is a lot of room for improvements. I'm hoping for AI and NAS access on groove boxes. Also import / export with DAWs could be easier.

The alpha theta's NOT SO cheap knock off of a Denon DJ Prime Go (a 4yr old product BTW....and it has streaming), is not innovative. Great Video Man and Thank you for not taking AlphaTheta's money and plainly lying to your viewers about a crappy product, that other DJ Influencer's are proud to show. down with Pioneer!! 🤪

Hi, thanks for the video. I have a prime Go, and after updating the firmware it's become a different beast. It's great to see Denon not forgetting the customer in this respect. It's always exciting to see improvements and enhancements. In Australia the price of the Alpha Theta costs $3400. I bought my prime Go for $1399 AUD during a sale.
You're right about NAMM, not many surprises. One company that stood out was Korg. They have a lot of new products, and the best is the recreation of the Vestax Handytrax. If this goes ahead it'll be awesome. Cheers

The ION product line in it's entirety is of badged OEM products. InMusic has been doing it for years on end. It simply looks like AT licensed the upgraded version before InMusic - or speced a speaker to existing design.

As a Dj of 48yrs there's nothing that really caught my attention. If you use 1200's, Repoops, Pioneer, etc., and blend, mix, scratch, and well (still rock parties that was) then nothing else has come out in the product line that we need. I still use Rane 12MK2's and Denon SC6000M's along with a Newmark Scratch, and Rane 72MK2 so what else is there that NAMM 24 offered that I don't already have? Ah Cases.. That's it, thats exactly what I need. Cases and Dj Booths. As far as everything else, I'm all set and don't feel like I really missed anything that made me say whoa, I must have that......

Given the rumoured price point, I think the Key 37 is likely to be an MPC One+ with keys. Same RAM, storage etc. As such, it will be less powerful than the Key 61 which has 4gb of RAM and included Fabric XL etc plugins. Oh, and the touch strip and superior I/O.
But hey, I hope I’m wrong. Especially the RAM bit.

NAMM’s been underwhelming since before the pandemic. Gear makers need to design zero-very low latency wireless Bluetooth 2.0 and above gear with large touch screen displays, mpe, modular gear. What happened to innovation and technology advancement. It’s 2024 & we’re still waiting on music tech to catch up.

MPC Key 37 looks interesting. The 61 is a big investment and takes up a lot of desk space. Can’t justify it as long as MPC doesn’t have arrangement functionality, The 37 looks like an MPC One+ with keys, which makes it attractive to musicians who are less focused on sample based work. The price should be reasonable.
Now that NI seems to have given up on investing in Maschine, I am seriously considering moving to MPC or Force.

Technology is going to keep evolving no matter what. So let's just enjoy what we have and stop trading and hating on developers and visionaries. We live in the golden age of gear, but is peculiar how we get the re-issues or clones. Let's just enjoy what we have and that is the freedom to be creative and share our music. Maybe conventions are over because eventually I can go to my Big Box retailer, six months later, and try the hipe and maybe get a deal. For entertainment purposes I love it. But depends on the "content creator" to present the angle that appeal to me. It doesn't take away from all other "TH-camrs". Let's just enjoy music and stop the commercial influence of manufacturers in our personal life.

How can you not mention the DENON Prime Go when you’re talking about the Omnis Duo from AlphaTheta? It is just an enlarged Prime Go in my opinion. Yes, Numark teamed up with DENON for the standalone battery DJ controller but it all started with the Prime Go which probably already has Bluetooth because of the WiFi capability. I’m looking for a law suite from Denon soon. Anyway great informative video as always bro. You put out great content. Keep them coming. 👍🏾

I think NAMM is always necessary. It's a Trade Show and trade shows are meant for companies to show off new products. That has nothing to do with people just wanting to see what's new and not seeing as many products as they would like in particular categories. But NAMM is only less people because of fires shutting down the chips factories in Asia, and many companies can't build and debut new products to display at NAMM at this time. MOTU is one example of many companies not being able to show off new sophisticated products or current old line of products due to chip shortages, plus Covid. Trade shows are meant to showcase to consumers. Trade Shows should never be questioned if they are relevant because they will always be relevant regardless of personal expectations because companies like to show off new products and people will always attend regardless a temporary decline in attendance due to unforeseen circumstances that delays new products. I'm sure NAMM will pick back up when the chip shortage is over in a few years to be back at full capacity. So I see it for what it is, a temporary chip shortage that prevents companies from building super sophisticated new products to show and they can't do that at the moment.

@aveMcCree Will this comment be curated as well? Although we talk about competition as being a good thing - which it is - it is only good when the innovators are protected against copycats and frauds. Yes producing a similar product at a lower cost does benefit a consumer... until those with new ideas and little backing realize that their ideas have no value. The end result is a marketplace dominated by the strong which is not conducive to innovation and progress.

To answer your question regarding NAMM being relevant for content creators - depends on what side of the street you are standing on. Content creators made NAMM relevant to them and for their audience, not the other way around. NAMM was not create for this purpose. It was not originally created for the consumer. It was a trade show. The consumer would have to run to Guitar Center and hear about what was coming. I personally love being able to tune into TH-cam and see some of the reviews. But I also feel it takes away from the true NAMM experience. NAMM was special back then. I remember seeing Stevie Wonder, Bernie Worrell, George Duke, George Clinton, Teddy Riley, the Jacksons, Prince, Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, Axel Rose, and a bunch of others at NAMM as well as getting a look at new gear back in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. And the spontaneous jam sessions!!! OMG!!! It was the place where you could run into the who’s who of musician, engineer and producer because they wanted to see what new toys they could get the record labels to pay for. You don’t see that today because everyone with their phones would invade the privacy of musicians and being groupies. We were never star struck because we would see these people in studios or award shows. I wouldn’t say it was better back then but it is definitely different today. More commercialized today. You could not purchase a ticket to NAMM back in da day. I remember seeing Bootsy just grab a Bass and start playing Body Slam! Great times! But with TH-cam and venders like Akai, and others having the ability to reach out to content creators to review their products , that’s AWESOME! I learn more about products from content creators than I do NAMM.

Omnis Duo is more a rip off of the Denon Prime GO, also an InMusic Brand, than the Numark. The Numark is just an entry level version of the Denon Prime GO.
I'm a DJ first which was the catalyst for me getting into making beats. The brand tribalism within the beat making/producing community pales in comparison. Pioneer is like the Apple of DJ Gear and Denon is like Android. Denon is more innovative as far as bells n whistles while Pioneer is on some, if it ain't broke don't fix it ish. Small incremental updates few and far in between while Denon released a dozen firmware updates in a year which were all big level ups. Pioneer fanboys would roast Denon updates and labeled them "gimmick" yet would literally beg Pioneer for the same features. So instead of implementing those features on Pioneer branded gear so as not to upset the "Industry Standard" elitists they're doing their experimental ish on Alpha Theta branded gear.

The brand tribalism within the DJ community makes the tribalism in production/beat making gear look like a slumber party. Omnis Duo is a blatant rip-off of Denon DJ Prime GO, also a InMusic brand. The Numark is just an entry level version of the Prime GO. Pioneer fanboys have been begging them to implement features that Denon/Numark were doing 3-4 years ago but Pioneer is like the Apple of DJ gear. Small incremental updates & calling it new while Denon has all the innovative bells n whistles. The algorithm Denon used for stems on their standalone gear is the same thing that was ported into the Akai plug-in. Pioneer doesn't want to stray too far from their "Industry Started" business model so their doing it with Aloha Theta branded gear. Competition breeds better gear for all. It makes manufacturers stay in their A game.
