    Fun fact: you can remove the Finder icon from the dock. What happens is: the icon reappears on every reboot and you have to "remove from dock" again. When removed, you can still use finder by either clicking on the desktop and pressing Command+N to create a new window or... launch it from the Applications folder using Finder itself or the terminal (or even spotlight).

    Isn't the Finder itself also responsible for Desktop functions, like explorer.exe is managing the whole UI on Windows?
    Yupp. Called it.
    (Btw you probably can't delete it easily on modern macOS because SIP is protecting the running OS. It can be disabled via a command in the recovery OS.)

    • @Z9R.
      @Z9R. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      No, explorer.exe is not for managing the whole UI. DWM.exe is for managing the whole UI. Explorer.exe is for the desktop. Not the windows. You could use windows without explorer.exe, but you can't use dwm.exe. in fact, you can change the shell to whatever you want.

    • @FlameRat_YehLon
      @FlameRat_YehLon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TheGoatussmoothius It won't stop anyone from somehow launch explorer manually, though, but speaking of changing the default shell on Windows, I can think of two cases, firstly if you prefer some third party shell (got to mention that, before Windows 10 it would be one of the ways to get virtual desktops on Windows, but otherwise it's usually for having something lighter than explorer which can freeze up and taking a lot of CPU power for no reason sometimes), and secondly, for launching the system with the command prompt so that it's less stressful yet still perfectly functional.

    • @FlameRat_YehLon
      @FlameRat_YehLon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Z9R. Got to ask this, when installing Windows Server with the "no GUI" configuration, is it that only explorer.exe and a whole bunch of GUI apps were left out during installation, or is it that even dwm.exe was left out? Giving that both the command prompt and the console can be accessed by another computer without using remote desktop, and additionally when using the server manager even those are not needed (at least not usually needed I guess), it's probably not ridiculous to have a version of Windows that can't run GUI apps at all.

    If you restart in recovery mode, then open the terminal there, then type "csrutil disable" It will disable system integrity protection and allow you to do whatever you want in the library folder, thus allowing you to delete the finder in newer versions of mac os. Was playing around with this in my mojave virtual machine and was able to just delete the library folder and crash the system.

    This video reminded me that I went through a period of time that my Finder would occasionally become corrupt. I quickly realized that I needed to make a clean copy of the Finder, and hide it somewhere. Then, when my Finder would become corrupt, I'd move a copy back into the System folder (yeah, this was pre-OSX days) At one point, I even decided to use a custom-modded Finder (added a command-Q quit command, and mucked with colors or something). When I moved to OSX, I kept that habit of keeping a backup Finder, and adding a Quit command to the Finder. Later, I discovered PathFinder, and simply quit the Finder and used that for a while, until they updated OSX to the point I had to pay to upgrade PathFinder. Maybe I should revisit PathFinder (I liked its integrated terminal pane). But the Finder has improved so much, though, I don't know what PathFinder would offer me today, other than that terminal.

    In the recovery console:
    - system integrity protection protects the boot disk, so it protects the recovery disk and not the system disk, so the files can be moved/written to/read/deleted

    I'm a bit surprised that Finder is actually just an app, to be honest. Sort of assumed it was something embedded more deeply into the OS - but I suppose it probably makes sense from a development point of view.

    • @prayagsuthar9856
      @prayagsuthar9856 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of things in many OSes are actually just separate apps. It's all about abstraction-we never realize Finder is an actual separate app because most of the time we only see the interface, but it actually is if you dig deeper.
      Another example is the ".app" files themselves-they're not some special magical file, they're actually just a container for all the compiled programs and resources for the app. You can just right-click on it and select "View Package Contents", and BAM, you've opened an entire app. Even ".exe" files on Windows are like this, but you can't easily open an EXE.

  • @manuel0578
    @manuel0578 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You know what’s an actual problem? Running out of disk space on the boot drive. If you have literally 0 bytes left (this can easily happen when you have lots of stuff opened, you run out of memory and the system creates a huge swap file) then it becomes impossible to delete anything. Even from terminal. I guess this is because it doesn’t have any space to update the file system structure. Closing programs also doesn’t work. While it will free up memory it won’t actually reduce the swap file size. Luckily they finally fixed this issue in the most recent macOS versions by always keeping 100 MB or so free.

    Great tips, and I use Quicksilver which has helped to get around some of those issues as well.

    Try installing a newer version of finder on an older version of macOS.

      That actually makes the system say it's the OS version that used the new finder
      Though the computer is still the same OS version.

    Hi Ken. Great videos. Very informative. Since upgrading to Catalina my mid 2012 MBP retina seems to be having a problem with a process called studentd crashing/locking up, which then causes other things to become very unstable. Any ideas how to fix?

      Thanks for watching. I've never heard of that daemon process. Personally, I don't use Catalina. Hit it up on Google. When I can make some more time later, I might give it a peek.

    So what happens if you replace the finder with another app? I assume that it would just error out because the finder is full of OS hooks and such.

    So it comes full circle in OS X. Without the Finder, there's the command line interface, the very thing the Finder was created so you didn't have to use a command line.

    Your video is amazing! very helpful and informative! You're really great with your Mac! My only problem is that most of everything with Mac doesn't usually work because most of the apps tend to crash or freeze for nothing. :(
    I badly regret buying a Mac, it wasn't really my choice though, my late father suggests I should buy a Mac and he keeps telling me that NO VIRUS
    would hurt it which I do believe it's true, in fact my Mac lasted longer than my previous Windows PC's! I have powerful and trustworthy anti virus software and clean up
    but I still wish to go back to Windows and run my favorite programs again as Mac won't let me run certain programs that are only made for Mac. :(

    • @theParticleGod

      Your Mac won't let you run programs made for Mac?
      You should be grateful for the protection your operating system is providing you, there is no safer computer than one that can't run anything, apart from one that is separated by an air-gap from all networks including power.
      Just to be safe, also disconnect any keyboards or mice and put the computer in a wardrobe so nobody sees it.
      Now with your computer safely disconnected from network and power, with no keyboard and mouse connected and hidden from prying eyes, you will find it does exactly what you expect and is almost completely secure against hackers.

    Almost same as explorer in win. I once moved my files from broken hard drive by loading from usb drive with os installer then i clicked on some terms or policy text and it opened notepad. by using open file window i moved all important files to flash drive. Sadly no progressbar was showing, but whole notepad froze and when done it goes back to usual.

    Much easier workaround for allowing deleting the app and or reading or writing to Catalina :)
    sudo mount -uw /
    in terminal allows you to
    sudo rm
    anything

    Hi, I recently upgraded my Yosemite based "music mac mini" to Sierra due to some not-working plugins. I started experimenting finder issues, perhaps a corrupted "plist" file... But I had to install the whole system from a Super Duper clone several times. Sometimes it lasted two days working fine, sometimes it lasted only one day, finder disappeared and deleting "finder preferences plist"didn't fix anything. Then I went into High Sierra and it was the same: great 2 days and out of order again. Now I'm on a fresh installation of Mojave and success for two days. Tomorrow is day 3, wish me luck!

    The Finder has froze on me before. Usually force quitting the Finder and restarting it will resolve the issue. You can do that like you do with any other app.
