- Four nights for our first trip to Isan Thailand, (Udon Thani) and it Was NOT what we expected... Northeast Thailand, better known as Isan has a slight unique culture change with a Laos influence, it makes for a fun night out hanging with some of the locals. Festivals, Police, Temples, and Nightclubs. Isan had lots to unpack.

Bro when I go I to Udon Thani I am the youngest white guy there and I am 57. Udon Thani and Nong Khai are God's waiting room in Isaan, us young dudes (lol)are living in the villages in between.
Nobody is in the wats during the day, they are at home or on the farm, only monks in the day and kids on bicycles after school. The wat sort of doubles as a community center when needed. It's village life, quiet,chill,family oriented.

I live just outside Udon CBD, closer to the Airbase. Near the university there is a heap of bars that's pretty fun for younger people. I rarely go into the city where most of the old people hang.
I'm 42, lived here 5-6 years.

I live In Isan now for over 4 years and you really did a good job of showing of what the night life is like in Isan.
And it is true the police is a lot nicer in Isan than in the tourist places, no extra fines for foreigners never had anything but positive interaction with the police in Isan
We just went up there with no real plan and open mind and had some fun… glad you enjoyed! And the police were so cool 😎
@@maomeaw5429I’ll be honest I live in Phuket and have never met a bad police man here we have business here so you can imagine we have to deal with them on a monthly basis in ubon I found they couldn’t speak English so never wanted to speak once they stopped me 🤣

@@oioi5794 I used to live in Rawai Phuket for over 7 months, and I guess it also depends on what you'll define as bad police. What I mainly mean is that in Phuket there are rules / fines for tourist and different rules for Thais.
Here in Isan you get the same treatment as a foreigner and the same fines as a Thai.
And seeing that almost all Policeman in Phuket at the traffic stops have only the newest -iPhones, and seeing the line of foreigners dropping off the 1000 THB bills right next, there could be a connection!?

Come back and visit sometime, the train from BKK makes for a great video (daytime for the views). you should visit Phufoilum (cave paintings, fossils etc), The Chinese-Thai Temple/Museum, the Ho Chi Minh museum (he lived in Udon for a while). For more chill vibes daytime/early evening Godemode Tattoo Studio and Cafe, Grafik Cafe & 8 Beat Disco Bar. Im from the states as well, hit me up next time your in town and drinks are on me.

How poor did I look? I was visiting a forest temple outside Udonthani on a cold, foggy morning after the monks had walked the countryside gathering food donations. Local women prepare the monks' breakfast with those donations. One of the 9 monks on the temple's dias motioned a lady forward, she sliding on her knees with a puzzled look. She returned to me holding a bowl of food the monk had sent to me. The lady said she had never seen this before. It was simple food but it was welcome.
Was in Udon Thani this past May. Didn't get to see too much of it (my girl was sick). also, I'm not a young buck like you two! One word of note, Aaron brother, you can't be riding a scooter with a basket in front.

Seems like a fair few foreigners, particularly older ones are based in udon. I have been to Korat and Kon Kaen cities, and can't recall there being many foreigners or a "foreigner night life district".
Most of the foreigners there are old and retired white guys who live with their Thai wives.
Most of the forigner bar areas are in the city CBD near central. Day n Night has been there for a long time, before i started to come to thailand which is nearly 9+ years now.

That's what happens if you marry a sex industry worker, a girl half your age, or one from a impoverished farming family. It's better to marry a college educated girl from a good middle class family who works a real job and is your own age or slightly younger.
