Take an old t-shirt and sew the sleeves shut and the bottom shut, put the shirt on a hanger, hang close to cutting table. When shirt is full sew the neck shut and I have a bed for my barn cats and when it gets nasty i can just throw away. Also some shelters like to have them.
Great idea! I sew up a rectangle of fabric and fill for dog beds.

I save my orphan blocks so that when I need a quick quilt like for someone going through chemo I make sampler quilts out of them. It makes an easy quick quilt. It’s amazing how they come together nicely. Everyone I’ve made one for has loved them.
I made the poinsettia quilt at retreat. I love it! My fellow retreated renamed it ….Christmas tulips…. No one saw poinsettias. Lol
I called it Christmas Tulips too.

Hi, always love watching my favorite mom & daughter duo! I’m new to quilting, but what I’ve been doing with my extra block or fabric is a coinciding pillow to match the quilt. I hope you have a great holiday!
I currently have 6 Christmas trees, bed room, dining area, sewing room, main bathroom, office and hallway! I am practical tho, I wrap my trees and unwrap them every year! I love my Christmas trees. We make some Danish cookies that are so good with a cup of coffee!
Take the opportunity to sew together at least weekly for a few minutes. The time will be treasured years down the line. Chelsi your daughter will see the time you take with sharing time with your mom in something you both enjoy and she’s most likely going to repeat it with you.

I have seen Kaye England a couple times at Shipshewana and she is a riot! Love Eleanor Burns! My first several quilts in the early 80’s were from her books. The quilt on the wall strikes me as tulips. Very pretty!
I love both the poinsettia quilt and the tree skirt. Beautiful!
In my quilt guild some of us make mats for the shelters of animals and some of the vets appreciate them for their over night critters after surgery. Also scraps of batting really make them fluffier!
Great stories today! My family had similar traditions: tree cutting, new ornaments every year, plates of cookies for adults lol. I love your patterns and your fabric lines, and these podcasts are fabulous! Thanks!

Hi. Love your TH-cam episodes. Just a quick tip. I often make potholders with orphan blocks and gift them to the person who the original quilt was given to. They are always appreciative.

I live in Canada and have watched my daughter play soccer and baseball in snowstorms and in downpours. I was so glad when she decided to switch to hockey, as at least that is indoors!
You can get a 1-3/4” HST block from the cut offs of a 2-1/2” strip. I have jars of them and my girls tease me all the time! I love to arrange them and make little mug rugs, project bags, etc with those smaller HST’s. Eventually I would like to do a scrappy ocean waves quilt with them.
I use my itty bitty scraps for stuffing my bean bag chairs.
Thank you so much for each and every podcast. I love watching them. I wish they were longer and more often. The dynamic between the three of you is perfect. The side stories are very entertaining. Every time you say that the story will be quick, I always want it to be longer. I don't have anyone in my life that quilts and would love to sit and sew with the two of you. I feel I can relate so much to Chelsea (I may be a couple years older) but my youngest will be going to school next year. I love to listen to the stories of someone my age and can relate to her experiences. Thank you again.

I inherited my grandmother’s patterns, scraps, etc. Some of my treasures are paper patterns my grandmother traced out of a magazine. I know a lot of her older quilts were made from feed sacks. Thanks for talking about the older patterns, I have enjoyed the memories today. I can’t even look at the scraps until I get two quilts finished. Then I plan to take a break and get organized. LOVE that Jack may get a new bed out of your scraps…lucky boy!

I am retired, no kids at home, but I still seem to be so busy this time of year! Reorganize…reflect…NO WAY! I am able to slow down and get my sewing room, my projects, scraps, etc. in order in January. I have had the grandkids making ornaments and cards in my room, it looks like Christmas threw up in there! January….I am living for January!

I love the idea of a quilt to sit on when you go to watch a game or for a picnic. I’ve used an waterproof, faux oilcloth fabric for the backing, it keeps the quilt dry and is easy to wipe clean.
I cannot see an Amarillas in your design, but what I see is Tulips which are my favorite design so I love it even more!! I'm just going to pretend it IS a Tulip and it will be my new favorite quilt. Hahaha. Sorry Chelsi! It is a most beautiful amazing quilt, I can't wait to make it. I of course am not a designer but your question you were asking each other was about another designer you keep their fabric. I have Beautiful Day by Cory Yoder. The thing is for some reason I love the fabric SO much I really can not cut it. I bought a Fat Quarter which is so expensive for me to afford but I cannot cut it! so I bought a 10" and thought if I have the 10" stacker then I could use the fat quarter so I can make the Beautiful Day Quilt, but NO, I now have both of them. I sit and just look at it sometime and it brings tears to my eyes. I am 69 years old!!! What is wrong? On some level it speaks to me and I can't seem to help it. It is just emotional. I can cut all my other fabrics but not that one,
Making a quilt from the orphan blocks and give to charity would be amazing. Somewhere like a women’s shelter or Red Cross for fire victims, or a homeless shelter Just a suggestion of course but such a worthy cause. Thanks for the chats, always enjoy.

Ladies love the podcast. I keep a container with all my trimmed off pieces and use that to fill dog beds and anything that needs to be stuffed. We accumulate that quickly then it doesn’t go in the landfill.
Also you can use your scraps to make kawandi’s or give them away to someone who will use them if you don’t have time or want to mess with the smaller scraps.
This was such a great podcast. I started quilting in the 70's and learned from the show Lap Quilting with Georgia Bonesteel on PBS and bought all her books. Also, love Eleanor Burns. I made a dog bed for my dog with leftover scraps but I have to say it was super heavy and when it got smelly, it made the washing machine dance around and took forever to dry when I washed it.

You can’t have too many trees or overdo Christmas. Just my opinion. Love Chelsi’s surprise at learning something new about her mom.
I really enjoy these Mondays. It’s like sitting at the kitchen table with quilty friends.
BOLTS: As well as your local quilt shop bolts can also be purchased thru Green Fairy. They sell Bella solids. I purchase Bella 200 from them.
FAVORITE FABRICS: Urban Chicks 🥰. I just had two Christmas panels, Swell Santa and Deer Christmas, quilted this year and they came out so adorable. The Kitty Korn kit will happen next year.
My other favorite fabrics are from Sweetwater. I have one charm pack of Mama Said Sew (2012) I can’t bring myself to cut.
ORPHAN & TEST BLOCKS: I have mine in a bin, 6 1/2” to 12 1/2”, to turn into picnic quilts. I will keep one and give the others to my daughter and adult grandkids.
INSTRUCTOR: I would love to take a class with Sherri, Melissa Cory because I am obsessed with her Swirling Leaves pattern and or Lori Holt.

I've "down-sized this year to only 4 Christmas trees in the house. At one time, I had up to 7 themed trees. In addition to the trees, I have a Dept. 56 village, and a Nativity collection. One of my themed trees is a light pink tree with a flamingo theme, and it will go in my currently being constructed quilting studio in my upstairs. For this year, it is downstairs. You guys are not over the top...you are my kind of people! lol!
Scrap solution:
1. create matching pillow shams!!
Imagine the delight on someone's face to get a "bonus item" that makes sense! Take all the leftovers from your project and play with them til an accent pillow, a bureau runner, or wall hanging emerges!
2. Cut down all the scraps into charm squares. I have a pile of 6", 5", 4", 3.5" and 2" squares. Build them up anf share out what you wont use. I'm bringing the 2-in squares to my guild. I don't want them. LOL
I too have one of Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day book - The Log Cabin Block. Years ago, I remember talking to a quilting friend about looking for a Log Cabin Block (think, actual, Log Cabin picture block) - and she directed me to this book - saying this is how you make a Log Cabin Block. Think of my disappointment at the time, when my vision of a Log Cabin House block, was this pieced together strip block :)! I now love every single Log Cabin block out there, but at the time, I remember not being able to visualize the 'house' in this block :)!

My friend and I make pet beds with our scraps and 'donated' scraps. These beds are donated to shelters and we make them in all sizes. I can't attach a photo here, but we have made extra large ones. I'll email a photo of one I happen to be laying in to demonstrate it's size. Great podcast
Watching post airing. I made a Rombus Star quilt in Blue and White Batiks. The Rombus Star is also the Jewish Star symbol. It is a pattern by Missouri Star Quilt Co, called Rombus Star. Easy to make and beautiful no matter what color scheme you use. Enjoy.
I set monthly goals and write them. I also add in extra things I work on. Year long goals don't work for me as I change if I see new things I want to do or try. I love looking at how your organize.

Very small pieces of fabric can be used for collage piecing. I will be taking a class in collage next week.
Years ago (late 1920s or so) the Kansas City Star published and sold quilt patterns. I believe that these were very popular.
I just love the quilt on the wall! Beautiful! I started quilting in 1987 while pregnant with our 1st child. I have been piecing & quilting ever since. I still have my 1st quilt I made, which was for my husband. I can't believe it is still with us.

I kept all my scraps until last summer when I felt overwhelmed with them. I threw away (gasp) all the small scraps and gave the rest away. I felt so much better afterwards.
In Seattle goodwill takes ALL CLOTH SCRAPS, clippings regardless of size , clothing I think of as rags, and sells them! They call it thread share I think. I cut days for girls shields and fill a paper grocery bag with scraps that are less than an inch or 2 that I consider too small for crumb piecing pretty fast! It always surprises me how much “ garbage” we create when cutting.
Keep the small triangles and mod pudge them to a styrofoam ball for Xmas ornaments!
Fabrics I can't seem to part with...oh my goodness...Tula Pink and Kaffe. I'll pull them out and admire them but can't seem to get cutter anywhere close to them.🤣🤣
I use 1 1/2” triangle to make a variety of stars, larger pinwheel centered stars and then smaller stars. I save them like other do hexagon flowers.
I saw a pattern for a quilt with dreidels that I want to make for Hanukkah next year. A dear friend's mother lost family in Germany in WWII and we both are making her a Star of David quilt. Want to make the Dreidel quilt as a surprise for my friend Kathy.
The orphan blocks would make a memory quilt reminding you of quilts/projects you have made.
I was drowning in scraps and have a good stash. I decided to give away most of my scraps to another quilter. Now I keep an open box and toss them in as I sew. When it is full. I mail it off to her. We are both happy.

I would dearly love hvng any on those triangle cutoffs. I use them for stuffing for pillows,not for dogs but for ME!.
Makes great neck pillows,especially, and a throw pillow to match the quilts or tablerunners I've bn making. Wished I had yours!
Re tiny scraps ... I am a camper ... i stuff all unusable scraps and threads in empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls ... we use 3 or 4 at a time as fire starters ... you can even add dryer lint in with the scraps ... hubby says they work great! Thought I would share that tip

I have made cat beds with batting scraps.
Question: When you make a quilt do you keep a small amount of the fabric in case you need to repair the quilt? Say - if your beloved former military working dog decides to chew a hole in it?! Also - would you talk about how to repair a damaged quilt? Thank you! Loving the information you both share!
We make scraps into dog beds and cubbies for kids to sit on.

I am using some of my orphan blocks to make doll quilts to donate to a local toy drive ( checked with them first to see if they would accept them). Should have 20 or more done in time.
I'm known as the dumpster diver queen because I take everyone's throwaway of triangles. I even take those small ones that will finish at 1" HSTs. They make great leaders and enders and someday I'll have a great ocean waves scrappy quilt made with those little guys!
Besides Eleanor Burns, two of the all-time great quilting influencers were Fons and Porter.
Love you podcast! Scarp’s…I too can’t seem to toss them so I started saving them to for a crumb quilt. They are 6” squares and when I do put it together I’ll probably need to tie the quilt or chance breaking needles.

I buy remnants of fleece at Joann and stuff with batting scraps and other cotton scraps for dog / cat 😊beds.

I always have a quilt in my car-living in MN the quilt is a necessity in case of car trouble!
Tiny cotton scraps like the ones from squaring up half square triangles are good for home composting.
I saw a video one time - sorry can't remember who it was - they keep a scrap quilt in their car , & if they come across anyone in distress, eg an accident, they give the quilt for the person to keep
I have a fat quarter bundle of Amy Butler that I can’t cut into. There won’t be any more Amy Butler fabrics now that she has quit designing so I don’t know if I am willing to cut it up. I think I also have a jelly roll as well which I can probably use, but not the bundle. I totally understand not wanting to use some fabrics.

My last name is actually Dutch, but my paternal grandmother was born in Germany. Hide the pickle ornament within the branches of the Christmas tree. Whoever finds it, gets a special gift.
The biggest you can get out is 1 3/4 HST. Sometimes I keep them, offen not.

No trees I’m my house it’s too small we have decorated a tree outside in past years
Probably tore up the bed because he had pain in his mouth. The only thing about scraps for a dog bed is it can get very heavy. S best to mix with stuffing too.
