When I was 10 yrs old, my parents gifted me a Yamaha vss-30, which had a multisample function. I will tell you that thing got farted into more than anything on earth.
It's fun though. Record random stuff and make music. Highly recommended. I got a friend to record a bunch of belches, and I made a song out of it. (it's on my channel if you're curious)
Really appreciate your breakdown and take on this! Every other video on the Chompi on youtube is alot of Elitists just dunking on it and shaming anyone who would want to play around with it, so it's nice to see someone actually enjoying and breaking it down to show it's uses and capabilities.
Hainbach has a good video as well. These are two artists I respect that have showcased amazing sounding musical expression in a limited amount of time, so that’s a go for me if I have the cash.
UwU Edit: 2:39 I am forever in awe how you're able to just... hammer out an amazing bit of music on something that even when I know how it works is completely alien to my brain. Much love Edit edit: Your set dressing is sooo good and cozy! UwU!
I chuckled with joy multiple times watching this! Your fun with it is infectious! I have a Chompi and this is an inspiration to just build some loops and just JAM! ❤
What a wonderful little friend! Thank you for sharing Jeremy :) I was surprised by how intuitive the controls were despite their minimalism. They developed a nice little design language or principle that I was able to pick up on. When you wanted to put the effects to be after the tape, I thought "oh, it's probably the black keys under the effect knob", and it was! I don't think this is the device for me, but I love what they've created here with Chompi and I enjoy watching your hardware showcases nonetheless!
Loop jamming is so fun. I miss it. I moved away from that style of workflow because I wanted to be able to do more fleshed-out songs, but it's hella fun for just messing around.
your videos are the best man! I feel like I need one of these even though I am not a musician, just an amateur dabbler. But it's therapeutic somehow to use other parts of your brain and just chill and be creative. Ok ordered one!
also thank you for sharing your thoughts on autism, i have had similar feelings since I was 8, but never diagnosed. Some of us just have very advanced ways of coping with it so it's hard to tell. I'm still not sure myself either.
Great demo video. My primary concern with buying one of these is bugs in the firmware. It looks like at least one update has been made since they started shipping. The initial videos by folks like Ricky Tinez and Hainbach showed bugs occurring in real time. It is good the devs are focusing on the software now. Is it time to think about pulling the trigger or should I wait a while? I don't think there is another piece of hardware out there that does the varispeed recording thing as well.
Fantastic job! Fantastic and sweet little tool, which is one of the most inspiring thing out now on the market. Even after knowing about the lack of some functions.
Once you do it a few times, you don't really need labels, the pictures are actually faster to recognize vs read. I will say that not putting some sort of label or shape on the top row of keys was a mistake, the black keys blend into the black of the body. They do light up different colors when you hold shift, so that helps a tiny bit.
I hate that blue LEDs are a rarity. Being color blind in a world where red, yellow, and green are the default “indicator colors” sucks. I wish being able to choose colors in plugins, in hardware indicator lights, in games, etc. was the norm … In a perfect world …
@@Danksaus @Blend3rman I’m talking about indicator colors used in hardware and software most often include the colors people with color blindness, like the red-green color blindness variety, have the most trouble distinguishing between. Yellow from light green, light green from light blue, blue from purple, orange from yellow, etc. It really sucks. Blue and yellow - easily distinguishable. Yellow and red. Red and blue. It’s a shame that blue is a relatively rare LED color. But indicator lights that change between yellow, orange, and green are terrible for people with color blindness. And there are TONS of us. It is not a rare condition.
its amazing, i just wish..it wasnt 500 dollars. i feel like no matter how simple the device, all musical / sample gear starts at a minimum of 300 dollars with very few exceptions, im still gonna get one its amazing, but argh , wish i wasn't so poor
You aren't kidding. The Model:Samples you can get around $250, or the older SP-404. Everything else is worth watching on Reverb, people get desperate to sell and will list stuff cheap if you watch it. I just bought my Chompi for about $425 plus tax.
It's kind of cliche to say this, but I worked my way up to it, buying used gear and building up my studio when I had extra money. I bought one of these last week used, and am paying for it over time. Lessons are free on TH-cam, there's thousands of them, many that helped me learn.
Noob here, I work with kids with special needs and when I first saw this come out I thought: Aha! This would be the perfect instrument for many kids! But the things you do here seems quite advanced. Do you have any thoughts on this, any sugestions on other gizmoes that could fit better?
this thing is 600 dollars, if you want an instrument for kids i'd suggest something else haha. imagine having to replace this when it get broken or dropped on the ground. or spilled on
Lyrics to the Animal Crossing inspired song are What did you do today? Well I made this It’s a pot with a frog on it and look he likes to sit Think you’ll love him to bits
I'm not sure I dig it. To me it seems like the example of the trend with manufacturers where they make new gear just to make new gear, counting on feeding someone's GAS rather than thinking of a particular niche where something like this could fit in well, or introducing some novel ways in which it allows one to write music or perform live, perhaps offering some aspect which no other manufacturer offers, or a combination of aspects not found on other gear, something I always thought Roli was pretty good at. Here instead, - you have cumbersome and out-of-place features such as the Gamecube handle. A handle is handy when it's a heavy piece of gear that's meant to be portable which Chompi isn't. While small form factor strongly suggests they were going for portability, - the handle definitely ruins that particular aspect being what I call: "space eater" (a take on "space heater"). It would perhaps make a lot more sense if it was marketed for small children, as their first intro to music making, but a microSD card and its menu diving complexity swipes that idea off the table. And it would still be possible to get through to wider audience of hardware enthusiasts, except ooops, - the puerile "I put stickers on everything I see and then doodle on them" looks is something too few of us would appreciate. Even Teenage Engineering uses this form factor and looks rather sparingly. So far the only aspect I'm appreciative of is plenty of ports.
Don't you LOVE that paint brush?! 😂 I mean, I've been known to have come a bit unglued now and then, so maybe it's just me... but I found that brush new in my house one day (my mother must have got it at some point, never used it and forgot about it) and for the next few weeks I just kinda carried it around the house with me. 😅 I couldn't put it down 😅 It was something about the balance of the rubber handle and how crazy soft the bristles were... I forgot all about that until now 😆
Every single synth should have a gamecube style handle. this is the future.
I don’t need this. I don’t need this. I don’t need this. I don’t need this.
I love mine :)
You need this!
But you want it 😝
😀
Yeah, keep telling yourself that, and we'll see where that gets ya.
That quick animal crossing jam was awesome
10:37 Woah today YELLOW means recording that's crazy!
How is this not an existential crisis for the op?
@@doctordiv Red still means recording, just now so does yellow too sometimes. Inclusivity is pretty cool.
They were afraid of a copyright claim by this guy right here
@@slick8086Well it could be “Yellow means looping”
Yellow in the looper engine means looping with overdub.

Don't make me want this, Jeremy.
I am sorry
It looks like it really difficult to carry around. Good thing they added a handle!

Chompi looks super fun, I really hope they get an eu distributer as the cost/postage/import tax situation is a little much right now.
You can order it for 679€ at "Schneiders Laden" in Germany.

no undo? im not going to buy this because of that single reason even tho i wanted to do some varispeed recording...
Setting recording to latch mode so you don't have to hold down the record button, to me is awesome.

The developers apparently specifically worked on new speed interpolation algorithms so it would be up to Hainbach’s standard haha
