  • A few weeks ago we looked at why Emirates’ wasn’t flying to Berlin. Something similar is in place between Australia and Qatar, limiting Qatar Airways’ service down under. Let’s take a closer look at this interesting situation and why Qatar Airways is currently able to fly into Brisbane…

You wont be able to fly domestically in Australia, unless you would to be traveling out of Australia. Example - if Qatar is allowed to fly DOH/SYD/BNE, the SYD/BNE sector would be deemed to be an international sector and the flight would be for passengers who have booked DOH/BNE or BNE/DOH.

Nations have Air Service Agreements with almost every other nation. These agreements provide the rules by which each nations airlines are allowed to fly to the other nation. For example, Australian airlines are only able to fly 25 times/week to Germany. Or 9000 seats/week to Canada. Of course, the same limits apply the other way, so German airlines can only fly 25 weekly flights to Australia.
Where nations don't have an air service agreement, the airlines of each nation aren't allowed to transport people/cargo between those nations. They only have the basic "Freedoms of the Air", such as overflight or refueling rights.
Above the Air Service Agreement is an Open Skies Treaty, which generally provides unlimited flights to anywhere between the signing nations. Though there are some carve outs, such as Haneda airport in Japan's Open Skies Treaties.

The DOH/AKL and AKL/DOH prior to the current heath pandemic with a non-stop flight using a B777-200LR. It seems that Qatar is using their B777-300ER''s due to freight requirements in and out of NZ hence the 'technical' stop in BNE possibility for refueling.

QR was actually able to begin the BNE service purely and simply because they reduced the PER service to 4x weekly, i.e. BNE and PER made 7x weekly between them. As for post-pandemic, I think it's more likely that either (a) they will extend the PER service to ADL or (b) one of SYD/MEL will extend through to CBR or HBA.

Gold Coast airport could be an option for QATAR if Brisbane was no longer available. and the airport has in the past seen both 777 and 787 flying in and out. There is a large population in the region and once Covid restrictions are eased it could be a viable option. Pre Covid the airport operated a number of international flights mainly to New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and Korea, but no flights that were scheduled for easy onward connection to Europe.

Qatar Airways is the only full service carrier between Australia and many European destinations particularly in central and eastern Europe. The alternative is either flying to Dubai on Emirates with the Dubai-Europe leg on Fly Dubai, with low cost carrier conditions, or you have to change airlines in an Asian hub. It would be reasonable for Qatar Airways to be permitted unlimited flights to/from Australia with a capacity limit per week for all carriers equal to two A350-1000 per day for each of the big four airports to be equally shared between all carriers. So if QANTAS and Virgin Australia do not want to fly to Doha then Qatar Airways can fly all the seats. I don't think QANTAS will have too many problems with competition from Qatar Airways as most passengers I have talked to have been traveling to or from airports that QANTAS does not serve such as Berlin, Warsaw, Budapest, Prague and Kyiv.

It's sad to see that Australian aviation is partial with Qatar airways and not with the other two Emirati carriers. If you see, Qatar airways expands its US network with utmost freedom, but when it comes to Australia, they limit the carrier's expansion in the country. Plus, Qatar airways and Qantas, despite being in the same alliance, both carriers do not have codeshare with each other.

    • @johniii8147
