The comm lag between Earth and Ilus is only about 6 hours. Travel time between Earth and Ilus is about a year. Really shows how much faster light is compared to even the relatively fast spaceships of the Expanse. So you can send a message from one planet to the other and get a reply back within a day, but if, say, you're Murtry and just had a sizable portion of the people you were supposed to protect get blown up, you're a long, long way from reinforcements coming to help you.
Some people gave the fourth book a lot of flak for being slow and different in pace and tone. But for me it was a welcome respit from all the action, politics and high drama in the previous three books and I loved it... The writers also intentionally gave each book its own tone and strory telling style. Book one detective drama, book two Political war drama, book 3 action thriller, and book 4 sci fi western. The show translates this pretty well, while maintaining consistency over the seasons. The creators of the show are doing a great job of adapting this to TV...

I feel obligated to point out that Murtry literally hasn't done anything terribly wrong so far. It's a frontier planet with no current government to serve as judge or jury and he's the head of security for RCE, a company who have legal rights to be on Ilus/New Terra from the Earth-Mars-OPA alliance (whereas the Belters illegally ran a blockade and settled without any real claim) and over twenty of their people sent on a scientific mission that he was in charge of protecting were murdered before they even landed. He's being brutal, certainly, but Belters did commit mass murder against innocent Earthers that were there with a legal charter to conduct scientific research. So far, Murtry has literally only killed people that either threatened him or other people whose safety is his job and priority. The Belters literally started the violence! There probably isn't anywhere to hold a large amount of prisoners on the planet really... especially with the power outages and such. He's being a hardass and kind of a jerk, but he isn't necessarily wrong. 🤷♂️
