Yeah, thats the reality of life. In high school, you can easily make friends. When in college, it is all about surviving and finishing the degree. Making friends is a very hard one as an introvert. Then my realization is that I need to adjust when it is very important to my studies. After that, learn to value yourself and your education. You are there for your studies, not to make friends. I totally understand you, Vai. Sending virtual tap at the back comfort. ☺
I don't really know how it is in other countries but I feel like I should give a piece of advice for those in America. Your studies are important and you should really try hard... but abandoning making social connections, friends, etc. is one of the worst things you can do. Once you get out of college, the chances you land a job increase exponentially through personal connections. Most of the time what you learn in school don't amount to all that much. That's a given in any job; the absolute bare minimum.
Think about it this way... if say you spend all your time to get straight A's in all your classes but make only 2 friends, you might as well just get say B's and make 100 friends. While this is a bad analogy and of course it is possible to make straight A's and still make 100 friends I felt like I just wanted to give a bit of an extreme example. Make good friends, don't be an asshole and enjoy college.

i think in any country, making friends is an important skill . building that network helps you through the college years and then can last you years after you graduate. nepotism aside, many jobs and careers do give more weight to/ priority to recommendations from connections (family, friends, alumni, legacy, etc )
but also, as humans, it's better for mental health to have a support system. introverts don't need a lot of acquaintances but you do need that close group of people for moral support or just for talking through tough times.
if you're not able to make friends in your major or in your department, then joining a club/association is another way to meet people.

I watch this video a lot but the ending where Vai told Dave he loves him always makes me tear up a bit... as someone who moved away from home for university I relate to everything Vai said about how hard it is in the beginning even though it’s been years for me since then. The phone calls with your friends & family back home for the first couple of months hit hard, and the way Vai talks so much he must’ve missed Dave a lot! It’s been a year since Vai went to college (and he has a girlfriend now, good for him!) and I hope he’s adjusted well and studies hard and do things that make him happy. I hope he’s safe and healthy. I know almost exactly how Vai is feeling. I didn't have to leave my friends or family, but college is just STRESSS. And with me working on days I don't have school I barely have time to just... be myself. There's constant studying and so many papers and presentations that I just feel really overwhelmed all the time. Sometimes it feels way better to think about giving up, but with the careers ahead, it would benefit us. Stay strong Vai! We can get through it!
