  • CAN I RUN BOOST WITH REC-PORT HEADS? DO REC-PORT HEADS MAKE MORE POWER THAN CATHEDRAL-PORT HEADS? WHAT HEADS ARE BEST WITH A TURBO? HOW MUCH POWER CAN I MAKE WITH A TURBO ON MY LS? CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO WHERE I ILLUSTRATED HOW WELL FACTORY REC-PORT HEADS WORK WITH BOOST ON TWO DIFFERENT LS APPLICATIONS. I COMPARED THEM TO A SET OF 317 CATHEDRAL-PORT HEADS ON A CAMMED LS3, NA AND AFTER INSTALLATION OF A PRECISION TURBO. I ALSO SHOWED HOW WELL THEY WORKED ON A DESTROKED (4.8L CRANK) LS3! i EVEN RAN A PAIR OF DIFFERENT CAMS ON THE SHORT-STROKE, TURBO LS COMBO!

My opinion, which nobody asked, if you have a 4"+ bore and have to buy heads get the ls3s. If smaller than 4" cathedral. If you have some cathedrals just throw them on until you want/need more head.

It takes fuel to make power. TANSTAAFL. The only way to make more power w/o burning more fuel is to increase the compression ratio. Run insane compression ratios in an Otto cycle engine, and you start talking things like water injection or alcohol fuels. [I believe it was Ricardo almost a century ago who showed that if you ran pure ethanol, then the detonation limit on CR was in the high 30s:1..?]

Bridge the Gap next to compare “Ported” cathedral port heads to rectangular port heads.
Average HP/TQ throughout the useable RPM range?
There’s really 3 stages of heads with specific applications based on intended use etc.
Was it BTR or Tony at BES who doesn’t recommend Rec heads as SOP until 400+ CID?

Definitely worth in NA, not so much Boosted. Imo. Could run a little more boost, and close the gap. Also blowing a motor with some junkyard 317s hurts a lot less financially than messing up ls3 heads.

@@ZONES89RS that's the thing though, you can make 1,000 hp on any of them. You can run 317s or 706s with 1 extra lb of boost and make up the difference without spending the extra money. Less restriction does take less boost, but cathedrals on 15 and recs on 13 or 14 will still make about the same power. Just depends on power goals. Most people are only running 10-12 lbs making 550-600 whp and would be fine with whatever it came with from the junkyard.

The rec port heads "look" like they would just kill the church heads .... but sure did not! The best thing they did was get rid of a pound of pressure up top. I have a camaro with a lt4 I don't think besides studs I am going to touch them....There is Very little/ no testing on those heads.

  • @bdugle1

I feel a bit like a sponge, soaking up results from the testing you do and report. Really good info, again! I can’t help but notice there is a difference between your conclusions and those of “Freiburger and the two Steves” when evaluating the effect of better heads under boost. This is not to question your conclusions in any way, they are clearly valid. Their test compared two sets of heads with a Procharger-different in many ways from turbocharging-but they concluded the better heads had very diminishing returns. Why? They did not change the pulley ratio for the mechanically driven setup, and had less gain from the “good” heads because the boost dropped. With your turbo test, the boost was closer to the same showing the true benefit of better (or at least higher flowing) heads in the boosted combo. This does not change your final advice, to just use the heads you have for boost. But when the underlying engine has the capability to use more air, you need to give it that air for a fair evaluation, IMHO. Regardless, thanks for this info Richard!

If I have a 4.8 LR4 Gen IV with 706 heads, could the cathedral ports be reworked into a rectangular port while only requiring an intake manifold swap or would it be more involved in that? Could you also shape the cathedral intake ports to rectangular instead of sourcing another manifold or using adapters?
If what I have theorized will work, it’d allow the combustion chambers to be reworked to match the bore size without being oversized, minimize detonation characteristics and chances of valve interference while having the flow benefits of the rectangle port.
    Any input?
