I actually messed up a spring job for once!

  • I took a saturday emergency call, and made it tougher on myself. I miscalculated a spring conversion and had to do the job twice. Frustrating, but I took the time to do it right and made myself and the customer happy. Quality Men. Quality Work. Gotta stand by our slogan here at Dapper Dudes Garage.

    I enjoy your information packed video's. Retired GM mechanic, had to take some time to give my garage door some attention. Spring broke, damaged door. Watched a ton of video's and took on the task {your video's included}. New springs {both}, new 16 ft top brace with door panel strut. Straighten and install roller hinges, upgrade to 9 inch rollers. New cables, ran new wires to sensors. Something was not right after adjusting travel and up and down forces. It would stop 6 inches off floor and reverse {some times}? Got new sensors {$20} during installation, found the one loose wire causing problem, installed new sensors anyway. Of course, the Chamberlain drive belt broke, so it got replaced {lifetime warranty}. All works quiet. You were a big help, thanks for all the information.

      No Problem. Thanks for watching and engaging. I appreciate it. As Ive said on this channel before somewhere along the lines, I’m by no means the best garage door guy on the planet and I still have a TON to learn, especially commercial etc. But I know plenty enough to own and run my own company and I am incredible with people. All in all I LIVE what I do and don’t mind passing on information to help others. Our world is trash bc not enough people have this mentality. So just want to do my part to help and share. Stay blessed brother.

    Great work as always Jess. I've been doing garage doors for about 4 years and I love your videos. I'm born and raised in Detroit (and currently reside here with my wife and 2 daughters) and my wife's from the Southside of San Antonio and we watch all your videos. Did you delete your last one with the fishing??? Anyway best wishes to you and yours Jesse 💙

      Thanks man, I appreciate that. There was this guy who had 20plus years in the biz who was condescending and a “know it all” constantly trolling my channel commenting and I had to block him bc he was just too jealous of me. His youtube username had the word egg in it. Explains enough right there! lol. But I tried telling this guy that I want to be real and genuine and help people and he was just a real live Karen. So simply had to block and shut him up. So, thanks for the encouragement and glad you don’t mind the videos, lol. Thanks brother

    Have you used the scc app it’s service spring engineering you’d have to weigh the door but it lets you know exactly what spring or springs to use if you chose to use 1 or 2 it takes an extra minute or two but it saves you from having to redo work. Man I’ve been there and it sucks! Awesome you show real world issues great job man love the videos!

      thanks brother. No honestly I’ve got so much experience the past 9 years or so that usually I can walk up to a door and see what size it is and what hardware it has on it and know exactly what size spring it needs and i’m usually dead on the money for real. idk just missed this one. Not sure where my head was but i did. It’s ask god as long as you go back and right your wrongs and do good work. Be fair and honest to the customers.

    That's good, but if they go with a premium option. you really should go with the dual spring system, not a single spring on a two car garage.

    • @murd777
      @murd777 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not really necessary. That's a non insulated door. About 160 lbs. It only needs a single spring.

    • @davidbutler6926
      @davidbutler6926 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @murd777 The life expectancy is the same, but with the one spring. It's pulling the door from that side with dull springs. It pulls evenly, plus if one breaks. You still have tension on the other case of emergency. You should be able to lift it depending on the door you have, of course.

    Jesse, what was causing the door to hit the center bearing plate? The garage looked to have 2x6 in all the normal spots for mounting the EBP’s and CBP. I thought I had seen in the past videos you were able to use the center 2x6 for mounting the CBP. I am gathering parts for my conversion and don’t want to run into this issue. I want to be able to mount to the front facing 2x6 like the original system was. Thanks for any help

    • @dapperdudesgarage
      @dapperdudesgarage  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A combination of two things….its ok to mount the center plate to any wood intalled on the outside sheetrock surface like this one was, however, most of the time you do this you need to make sure that you can mount the end plates on the highest most position to give adequate clearance. Which I believe I did here and it still hit. So, sometimes its just how the previous installers installed the door itself. They installed the radius track just a hair too far forward towards the wall closing that radius clearance gap. So, regardless, sometimes this can happen no matter what. Because of me running into this multiple times I usually try to locate a stud somewhere else along the wall as I did here and stay away from mounting to any wood unless no stud is present anywhere along the wall. And when I found one right next to that board I then question why anyone put the board up in the first place. Craziness!!!! Had a perfectly good stud to shoot to. Why use a board??

    • @dapperdudesgarage
      @dapperdudesgarage  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yeah, in this case it would have, but my normal inventory cost for a torsion conversion from wayne dalton is for one spring. Absolutely could have gotten away with two 192’s or even a 192 and 207 gauge. But not a big deal at all with the one because unlike most big companies I actually have a check up program where I reach out to customers with extended warranties and do a lube and tune and balance. So one spring is safe for now because in a few years I’ll check the spring tension and if its too weak I’ll just replace the spring. No biggie

    • @dapperdudesgarage
      @dapperdudesgarage  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Two springs instead of one is just more inventory off the truck that isn’t necessary, ya know. Again, mainly because the package i showed to the customer included one spring because most wayne dalton doors only require one. But nonethless got it done and the balance is great now. So its a w in the win column! 🤙

    Jesse, I just subscribed today. I am in Omaha, NE and my new garage door repair company is opening Jan 1st. 2024., Anyway, may I ask how you price for 1, 3, 5 and lifetime warranties? I like your warranty program but do not know how to price mine. Can you give me an example?

    • @dapperdudesgarage
      @dapperdudesgarage  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Absolutely. To be honest, I give a 1-year warranty for baseline temporary security for the customer to help seal a deal if they are low balling me in price. But other than that I don’t give a 3-year. It’s honestly in my opinion pointless. I usually do 1, 5, 10 or for selling purposes a lifetime if the money is worth it. As far as pricing, I do my thing at what price I feel is worth it for any given service or product. From there, I basically charge usually like $148 per warranty upgrade per increment such as 5yr, 10yr etc. So say I price springs at 200? I would say or for a 5yr warranty they are $348, 10yr would then be $148 more so $496 and so forth.
      I hope that helps and makes sense. Congrats on ur new business. Truly wish you the best. I would like to see and know how u do. Start a youtube, I’ll be the first to subscribe, lol. And thank you so much for subscribing. I am fixing to drop and awesome video with some fishing and Karaoke. Yeah, gonna embarrass myself lol.

      @@amyackerman2291 If I am being honest…yelp is by far and hands down the best bet. A couple of reasons why…
      1.) Yelp simply produces
      2.) You don’t have to pay up front. You basically start with yelp, (and even when you do they will give you free ad credit for joining yelp), and basically you get to market and get jobs the whole month with a chance to make great money before paying for any marketing. You will most certainly make far more than what you will owe yelp monthly.
