  • Six Months after Imperial College closed the doors of Wye College an air of despondency hangs over the place. Of course, the facade is still there and your memories will still be awakened by the bricks and stonework. But (and it is a big but) there is little to remind us of the rich contribution Wye and its students have made to the rural aspects not only of Britain but of many places round the world. Maybe PhoenixCollegeWye will be successful. Maybe, even the University of Buckingham can establish a privately-funded university on the campus but unless someone comes to the rescue Imperial College will sell out to the highest bidding developer. They will probably rip things down - look at the window frames so much is in dire need of repair. But then, maybe like the snowdrops, Wye College will recover once the cold winter has passed.

I am a Wye alumnus... The place I had the best time of my life, where I did the postgraduate studies that directed my life and opened all possible horizons. It is a great loss for society, agricultural science, economy and rural development. It was a word class institution in its field, but manly for value to people of developing countries. Imperial and the finance world could not care less, it is a world social good, but not profitable.
