Bridget Welsh: “Very Possible” That PAS Could Govern Malaysia One Day
Bridget Welsh is an independent political scientist and scholar who has lived in (and analysed) ASEAN and Malaysian social, political and economic developments for over three-and-a-half decades, writing books and advising companies and NGOs on how to navigate one of the world’s most important and exciting regions.
Welsh's views on Malaysia's- and ASEAN’s future are explosive and troubling. They are also truthful and nuanced. This could be one of the most important discussions anyone can consume in this era of great change, risk and opportunity.
Listen with an open heart and a constructive mind. It might yet help you navigate an uncertain future.

Thanks, Bridget Welsh for being frank in this discussion.
Excellent assessment Bridget - appreciate the great insights.
Our political leadrs should watch this podcast and pick up some ideas to reform. It has always been rhetoric on reforms and a reactive approach vs a proactive. Always, the same excuse that we need time. The Anti Hoping laws took decades to implement. Had it been implemented 10 years ago, then the political upheaval of change of Govt.s and Sheraton move would not have occured to the detriment of the Nation and Rakyat..
Why pas should not rule if it wins elections? What’s the meaning of democracy? Discrimination?
Should PAS be allowed to follow the same political idealogy in Iran 1979??
Cannot, how can Sunni imitate Shiah way?
PAS is sunni while Iran is shiite. They don't see eye to eye. However, Mat Sabu is shiite.
Bro afraid on what he didnt know..
PN will govern Malaysia but not Pas in the near future because now Anwar government is a great failure.
The unthinkable might happen😢
multi-polar world is only as good as the voters believes it benefits them but when most malays voters are sidelined because of a lacklustre economy and are sold on the promises of better social benefits for all malays when the country is transformed to a fully religious state.
This is one of the best Podcast - No Holds Barred - that i have heard in a long-long time. I salute the Great Lady...
There use to be a subject in school pendidikan sivik ..... It teach the students how to respect and be more understanding of other cultures and religion and in my opinion national services (plkn) actually helps that you because it teach you to tak responsibility as a unit not as an individual or races
Been looking for Malaysia public intellectual finally found this channel.
But sadly look at the amount of people subscribed out of the 30 million population on the internet watching rubbish videos.
Please learn to read the subtext. Foreign companies or investors like stability and they prefer one political direction in a authoritarian governance where they can predict their environment. Basically now as Bridget says we are becoming more democratic.... Foreign companies are hesitant as Governments now need to adjust policies to peoples needs not to Foreign investors preference for stability.
WOW, Great podcast I can watch Bridget if she continue to 3 hours, Mr Chuang I become addicted with your podcast, thanks Sir for this session.
Difficult to sum up malaysia situations now due to many-many variables it has
Government should watch this
Sneaky Governments are always watching 😊
Great session! - honest , articulate, piercing. Politicans need to listen and start detailing policies vs articulating visions that have no follow up! All investors, tourists, potential PR candidates need to listen to this so we know what we are walking into. Congratulations to the host and Bridget Welsh with her diplomatic, and penetrating insight. Thank you
Hope this day will happen, East Malaysia is watching

Welsh fails to mention that the CIA & US embassy were involved in regime change & toppling a duly elected president in the Maidan coup in Ukraine in 2014. This led to civil war in certain regions of Ukraine like the Donbass which rejected the proxy government installed by the US. Ukrainians who were ethnic Russians in Donbass were bombed & killed in tens of thousands b4 Russia even thought of intervening. Putin entered into the Minsk agreements hoping to avoid the conflict. However the Ukrainians failed to honour the terms of the agreement signed. NATO under US leadership then escalated tensions further by publicly stating that there could be NATO bases in Ukraine along Russia's borders housing ballistic missiles. When u keep provoking Russia esp regarding their national security, their responses towards Ukraine were justified & inevitable.
Hallo Igor
You are drunk again
This is the wrong tread you are commenting on
We are talking about Malaysia and not Maidan
Agreed with many of your points.
@VoiceofSarawak I am responding to her comments regarding the Russian/ Ukraine situation. She is parroting US/ NATO talking points, which do not reflect the factual history of the conflict. If all u have are baseless accusations of intoxication, perhaps u r the one that's had too much to drink. SMH..
Chuang you really need to tone down the 'doomer' mentality and rhetoric. Things are not that great and we should discuss how to improve things. But you take it to a whole other level.
But I do really see Malaysia in such a state.
@@alexlau2312 Yeah. But it's a bit weird when a foreigner is more proud and more optimistic about Malaysia than Malaysians itself. You could say because she has 'options'. But I'd like to think there is more to it than that.
I can vouch that the narrative of country is doom and gloom is played out by the “woke” intellectuals and aristocrats equivalent in the country. Until we get our act together to think about what we can contribute then we cannot push out from the middle income trap here
We Malays vote for Pas as our commitment to fight abuse of power and corruption of umnobn govt along with PH supporters. When umno bn collapsed, ph make umnobn as friend and at the same time freed umno leader

PAS already governed Malaysia in 70s and 2020 the 2022 in coalition, concise term.
PAS rules Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah now. How many non muslims in those 3 states have left their hometown to leave somewhere else? hahaha
@@awang57 moved to non pas rule states
@@awang57 as a Malay Terengganuan who have lived in Terengganu most of my life with several years of living in Egypt, Selangor and Sarawak, this state is crappy now. Terengganu was much better when we were under BN (but at that time my naive and gullible self was a PAS supporter). BN governments succeeded in turning our students the best SPM scorers in the country, education was centerstage! and for such a small population of just 1 million we were SUKMA champion for many consecutive years. Since PAS took over we don’t have any more development, at all! Only projects going on are from previous state government. Trust me this state is rotting and will soon be eclipsed by everyone else in Malaysia and our youths will migrate elsewhere for opportunities. I cringe at all these PAS supporters from outside Terengganu who praise Samsuri as if he’s doing a good job. He is not. He underperforms, he is not doing anything of substance for this state. He gets praises for being able to carry out “professional” demeanor but that alone doesn’t make him a good leader and feed the people. The only reason why I’m back in Terengganu is because I love the scenery and the beaches and I miss my family.
if PAS takes over then the question would be how radical will this government be; and if it gets too radical there is a good possibility that non-Muslims would seek to leave the country (maybe even some moderate muslims) and then the competitiveness of the country in the international arena (sports, industry, etc) would drop vastly and that would also mean reduction of foreign investments and maybe even some pullouts.
why there r need to worry for that ? when we see trganu klntan kedah doing fine so far, chinese indian there have no complain as they understand and respect muslim who against gambling, alcohol,to trade in open shop...they can buy only those license only non-muslim allow to buy...why seem so inferior ? do u think is pas lead the ocuntry, every other religion cant be practice? u knw it wasnt to be like that...why fear ? still i dont believe pas have that enough capacity to lead, they need pkr umno still to lead...so no worries, pas is fine to assist along with pkr umno peacefully.
Hopefully not in my lifetime ...
@@myownmyown3617 meaning after u died...so have no worries ok,just live life like usual..fear of die earlier better than fear of pas..
PAS would rise oil royalty to 20%. So would east malaysia. Everybody happy.
Will Pas shut down casino, ban alcohol , gambling and entertainment? The county will be like utopia kelantan, why worry
there are only 2 paths currently available to break the shackle of backwardness of traditional civilisation for third world countries :-
1. to walk the trodden path of Developed country with greater efficiency and integrity in order to uphold, institutionalise, and prioritise objective mindset and its premise in their leadership and institution as the crux of becoming modern civilisation and economy. a path only leaders with objective mindset can pave or
2. to submit to an alternative path of gaining skin deep expedient modernisation and shortlived prosperity by becoming economic dependent and subservient to Developed countries which allow leaders that lack objective mindset and wisdom, who are enpowered and incentivised by Western elitist institution under the framework of elitist win-win market driven growth imperative and vicious geopolitics to prevail. a path that deliberately corrupt not only their leadership and institution but also denounce imperative of objective mindset and premise of foundation of modern civilisation and economy, at the expense of the masses .
it doesnt matter who wins, Malaysia is already near the tipping point of no return to becoming a modern civilisation. they are false modern economy as of most SEA countries - incl all current Developing countries - whose leaders lack insight and understanding into the core premise of modern civilisation and its economic foundation.
I think this is an important and insightful podcast. One reason I think is the non-partisan, objective and unemotional nature of discourse. We need to look at the changing landscape objectively, look objectively at why the landscape is changing and then we have a clearer picture of what can be done
One thing is for sure - there is very little political will to make positive changes. This is not only true of the current administration, but has been a perennial Malaysian problem for a long time.
Get to the source and you will find solution..
The real problem is the lack of politcal will to change for the better. We voted Harapan to change and make a difference.Nothing happened for two years and Sheraton move turn the politcal scene. Voters are dis-illusioned. That's why many are not coming out to vote even for state elections.Who is to be blamed?.
I already foresee this.
Great insight by Ms Welsh.
Wonderful and deep insights! Fantastic and frank observation. Thank you Ms Bridget W.
Malaysia as head of ASEAN will distract Anwar away from his own Malaysian issues. He has always preferred international prestige than actively manage domestic issue solving.

@@suaramurba1513 What makes you any better known? As a cancel culturalist?
Ever since they dropped the voting age down to 18 from 21, I have believed that PAS stands a very good chance of winning the right to govern. My conclusion is that, the young new voters, who happens to attend pondok, islamic schools have heen brainwashed by these schools. Already 4 states have fallen to the islamists. By next election, with more under 18's becoming more eligible to vote, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that more states will fall to PAS. The chance for PAS to win, on the backs of these 18 year olds, is good
Most riots are instigated by gov. Look at Mao’s Cultural Revolution, look at the recent Blue Bird movement in Taiwan, Ukraine Maidan etc; all of these incidents, although protray itself as the pro-change, pro-idealistic (in the sense of Mao’s China) positive force, is actually a way by which an state actor exerts its power, using mass mobilization or whatever it can to ask the people to rally behind (thus democracy) to support their cause, so that they can benefit from the chaos created
Question should be asked is, whether how many chaos and how far does that state actor want to go to achieve his or her goal in politics. How many people need to die for nothing for him or her to get what he or she wants
Also understanding society using the lens of Marxism also helps. Just picture the proletariats and bourgeoise having never-ending class struggle. The proletariats are poor but they are the majority, the bourgeoise are rich but they are the minority. Both of them can’t coexist and they are always fighting each other, everyday in their life.
Bridget Welsh gives insightful ,balanced and heart-felt comments about Malaysia. Much respect for the lady. She should be made political advisor to the government. Her comments about the 'deepening of the Green movement " in Penang is spot on. In the not too distant future Penang will be governed by PAS/PN and assimilated as part of Kedah.
And guess what? The DAP in Penang government is still infighting amongst themselves. These politicians are only concerned of their own power and privileges.

Wish to mention that am an avid reader of your articles in Mkini.
A united and stable Sarawak under the leadership of Premier Abang Johari Openg has been successful in “demanding” a bigger federal allocation to carry out various development programmes and projects.
I won’t say the same for Sabah, though.
I have to agree with you, despite being the infamous short tenured PM, Sabri in the 11 months enabled more reforms than Anwar in his one plus years. Thanks for Sabri agreeing to continue the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Transformation and Political Stability, namely the Anti-Hopping Bill was passed in Parliament. An end to the shameless political frogs. And Sabri also displayed his political maturity by dissolving the parliament and paving the way for GE15, instead of holding on to power.
UMNO is history, for the exact reasons you mentioned.
As for the young population, I totally agree with you, lacking of policies for a more sustainable livelihood. More has to be done.
Very interesting conversation, thank you.
Very generic holistic views ... many SEA countries are facing the same issues and challenges
Do Sarawakian overall welcome PAS or it may cause a friction among Sarawakian which may led uprising of the Dayak and causing fear within the Sarawak muslims.I solely forsee that PAS is not welcome in Sarawak if the tend to practice racism religious bigotry

We have seen PAS as part of the coalition government during the COVID period. Honestly don't see any religious extremism. Hence why the need to be so afraid if PAS governs Malaysia. The Malaysian economy now is worse than before, without any comprehensive or any articulate justification when announcing a point. More of talking without substance and action. Media Freedom is at worst, what was said before by PH in reforms etc is just not reflecting on what the people see today.

A great interview. If PAS comes to power 2 of the likely consequences, amongst others, are: i) Exodus of foreign capital. Only then Green Wave supporters would realize that religiosity not necessarily provide food on the table; it's economic productivity that does. ii) Either both, or at least one, East Malaysia state could exixt Malaysia. As they may feel that they didnt form Malaysia for a theocracy.

I feel that Malaysians have grown more apathetic, harder to motivate, because of this feeling that everytime they are promised something, hope is destroyed. GE14 was a huge rush. Finally, the old sytem was going away!.. but what happened? PH1 failed in 2 years, leading to a level of leaderless confusion that was unprecedented. I believe GE15 did not clarify things. Are we going to have Najib be a prominent leader again? Bridget said it is taking a LONG time for the stain of 1MBD to recede. Has it receded?

Non malays have themselves to be blamed for the current situation
They think that by weakening both UMNO and BN, the malays will switch their support towards malay-based parties within PH (PKR & PAN)
Instead it is PAS that is reaping the rewards. Do expect the green wave to spread to the south & both UMNO & PAN to be completely wiped out post GE 16
who told you this is the case?
My take is that PAS will not even win any state outside Kelantan and Trengganu come the next election.
The non Malays have no love for UMNO or BN or PN or PAS but they are pragmatic. It is either partner with UMNO or be neglected and domm the country for certainty.
Malaysia had been falling since the DAY TDM took over.
PAS gained a lot of votes previously was not their popularity but the wave to bring down BN at all cost.
Stop dreaming it will happen again in the next general election. The Madani govt is not sitting still and will it is the best government .
My observation in next GE, there will still be no winners, though PN will have more parliement seats. Umno would loose more, probably half of what they have today. PH will still be the government but weaker, holding on to allies from borneo. that in it self is so fragile. But at state level, PH and UMNO can say goodbye to Perak, Pahang and Malacca. Only place remains to PH/UmNo is N9, Penang and Selangor. PAN would not be wiped out as long as they contest in majority non malay area like klang.

I just amazes us , how you guys think ....
No PAS will be confined to Kelantan and at best Trengganu and these states maybe helped by the govt's East West rail projects .
Open your eyes buddy ...
Malay Muslims will be the biggest losses for dividing their vote for PN, PH and Umno, PAS will gain from the spill over malays who are confuse and cannot decide between racist and religion extremists politicians
@@ChuanTeh PH/UMNO is in one coalition, so malay is only divided by PH/UMNO and PN (PAS/Bersatu). if its a 3 corner fight, then malay will split the votes 3 ways, but even then, from 2022 election data, in general, 65 malays voted PN. in a 1 to 1 fight, that percentage became 75% (overall, as some state like kedah scored 85% while selangor its 60% malay votes to PN). In a constituency where malays make up 62% of the voters, that place is already a lost to PH, except some outliers like shah alam or lembah pantai. in every election, malay voters increase 1%. so places like Taman Medan which used to be 55% malay, now become 65%. in 40 years time, even place like Bukit bintang and Puchong will be malay majority. Just go to Lowyat and see who are the workers there today.
Dont Forget that DAP also will rule malaysia one day
All the very best to all Malaysians. God bless you 🙏🤲

So what...?
Let PAS rule. Its what every one wants isn't it?
Very possible but also very possible that it wont.
It is impossible for PAS to become the government unless they don't preach 3R issue at their whim and fsncy👎👎👎😛
they dont have to preach 3R issue. Just look at the economy, Zahid, how government manage Najib issue and Agong. I would just cross my hand and watch the endless stupidity the government is making.
DAP also has 3R issues..
@@nabielashah889 If you said DAP has 3R issue why 10%of the members are malay and some Indians I don't get it???
