@@henrymlim history repeats itself unfortunately. A stronger China will immediately reflect on local Chinese whether the Chinese want it or not. If China is weak like it was in the 60s, they will believe they can get away with murder which they did but if they do it now, it is a different story solely because they do not want to mess with a nation which has superior power economically or militarily. Being a south east Asian Chinese, in most of the Malays' or indonesians' eyes means you don't belong there according to them as they have claimed it all as evident in the riots of 1969. You may believe that you belong there but not in their eyes unfortunately.

It’s all to do with the mindset. I’m in my 60’s. My parents introduced me to the other ethnic groups before I turned 5. We had neighbours who were Malay, Indian, Sikh, Peranakan, Singhalese ; all living on the same street. We still remained a Malaysian Chinese family but we were free to visit each other’s homes and have meals together; totally respecting each other (free interaction and sharing celebration). So, it’s the parents and the environment which builds the mindset. Btw, I’m totally educated in English, but I can speak and understand BM and Mandarin.

I think this episode is very insightful for the Malay community especially. I have close Chinese friends and open minded to discuss sensitive issue because of the close bond we have. I learn so much misconceptions on both sides. When I have conversations with friends who are Malay, majority of them would hold on to distrustful perspective over the Chinese community and when I talk to Chinese community will have similar point of view and point out that I am an exception among many which is not true. At the end of day, politicians care more about votes than us and play the hero which narrative fits them the most at the time... As we can see what's happening now.

The fact is everyone knows the main reason why there is no "real" cohesion and unity in this nation simply because of 2 tiers policy that this country is upholding since decades ago ....... As someone cited, how can you be so total "loyalty" when you are not treated equally, just and fair ..... Of course, there are lots of "resentment" and unsatisfaction no matter where you are if you are treated as such ..... Race and religious supremacy must not be how this country supposed to go forward. In English, people who are ethnically Chinese and people who are citizens of China, are simply called _Chinese_ leading many people to confuse and conflate the two together. I don't know Mandarin, but I've been told, in Mandarin, they are two completely different words. So there is no confusion. China's governments (both of them) runs on Mandarin, not English.

That is why they are chinese colonial mind and migrants untill today. Chinese schools must be closed. Mandarin banned. Like in Indonesia. Your mindset is ok but also irresponsible for future generation. We are educated differently, we don’t riot for no reason but it doesn’t mean others won’t. If the country couldn’t develop & continue to grow, when finance is in shambles, riot ensued and the “master race” of this country are brought up with education of entitlement to its core where even the Quran focus on us vs them mentality, they will look for trouble with you or your children. So if we don’t help them to change (not imposing change on them, it has to come from them willingly), the problem will come back to bite us in the future. Change is difficult, comfort zone is easy. Life now in Malaysia now is pretty alright, it could be worse but it could turn into Bangladesh any moment where even their own people are not happy with the quota, cautionary tale for us.

Could try to get George Yeo too.
Kishore and George are pretty much bias towards China but George has an interesting and fresh take when he analyze China from cultural point of view as he talks about paper or how he is a Christian but embrace Taoism philosophy. The West seems to find it fascinating on China's ability to sinicize or the sinicization of religions such as how they are able to bring Taosim, Confucianism, & Buddhism under one roof, "harmonizing" the 3 different religions. I couldn't remember the names off my head but there were many Christian organization who actually spent time & resources trying to study Confucianism and then compare each other religion while trying to find the common ground or common values. I suppose George is that one example of how he is already capable to be both a Christian & a Taoist at the same time.
Personally for me it's quite easy such as Jesus teaching of turning the cheek, essentially it is no difference from the virtue of 忍(Endure, Tolerate, Put up with) or the proverb 忍一时风平浪静退一步海阔天空, the rough translation would be endurance & compromise will make the conflict much easier to resolve. Sadly this is something that doesn't seem to be common with Islamic teaching. Sure the Muslim preacher will go around talking about how they believe in Jesus or Moses but then their ultimate goal is to convert you because their follow up is to say your holy book has been corrupted whereas their holy book is the only one that is original, pure, & sacred. The intention is already impure & disingenuous which would surely lead to direct conflict with the West easily. In fact I have met Muslim preacher who believe Jesus turning the cheek is a stupid idea, which not only get on the nerve of believer & non-believer alike but it plays to the stereotype of how a Muslim is a Jihadi who is waiting to....Basically It is like 24/7 direct confrontation as oppose to finding common ground where they can avoid conflict and coexist. At the end of the day, Christianity & Islam are 2 sides of the same coin trying to convert the others, but Christian are more charismatic while Islam is an all out submission as Lee Kuan Yew put it.
Speaking of which, it seems that the sinicization of Islam has always been on the agenda too as announced by Xi Jin Ping and many of its official. How that pans out is remain to be seen but I believe Malaysia's progress will be at the center stage of it. At the very least, China seem to be able to bring all different Muslim adversaries to come to the table. Saudi (Sunni) normalizing relation with Iran (Shia), Palestinian 14 different groups agree to put aside their infighting, Russia having to bite its tongue and sit together with Taliban.

      Not from Masia.
I read quite some comments. I cant say much about general people's view, perception.
But in general, the issues with Nationalism and nationalist is that they(people in power) tend to assume, non majority people, be it based on origin, religion, language, region etc. as a security concern and threat.
And to make matters worse, those intelligence agency of many countries tend to have and facilities brutal, criminal alike abominable mentality people who are far far worse than animals and does disgusting stuff everywhere and writes plenty reports full of falsehood and their so called bulsh*it stuff in what they belive.
And always sub-conciously keep in it in mind Politicians are not exactly good people.
Plus those outsider govts(mainly those so called west bast**rds) and probably the countries bordering you country tries to fuel things up and destabilize your country. Or the govt simply fears those bordered countries or the people in question.
So what im saying is, yeah your are right. Most people should go through the same life regardless of minority or majority.
But the scenerio changes if a individual/group gain power or try to pursue power and it a minority group. Including but not limited to the minority group want some changes which "govt people " decides dosent align with them regardless of good or bad.
Or perhaps simply beacuse the govt. view your or your group(minority) as potential power house.
from little to unbearable losses will appear in one's / a groups life. It could be like- threats/warming, facing prejudice, misconception to "getting killed". But the worst part is, if they decides to toruture and not kill. one will be screaming to kill him/herself each day until he/dies dies.
And you know what, in many cases you wont even know what you did for which they are doing this you.
Seen many innocent people who had to face it. And at the moment of writing, many were still facing it around the globe unfortunately.

I am a Malaysian Chinese, my culture is Buddhism and confusionism. As a Buddhist, I practiced positivities as a way of life meaning less hatred and accept peaceful interactions among my neighbours of other races and to respect the government of the day on their policies base on our national constitutions. Confusionism in us is to respect the elders and our ancestors all the way from mainland China. But I see the most Chinese in Malaysia has lost that culture due to their new culture like Christianity. I believe religion makes the difference in our Chinese community in China. If you noticed for example, the Prime Minister recently made a decision of sending Palestinian people to Malaysia for medical treatment, that was critism among the Chinese and these Chinese are mostly Christians. This is because Christianity has western influence through their churches. But for me as a Buddhist, I supported the PM base on humanitarian grounds because Buddhist teaches us to be compassionate to fellow human beings. This is just one example, another is most Chinese Christians don't like mainland China and the reason is Chinese government is authocratic to them basing on the western influence. I might be wrong but this is what I see it.

@@viralcelebs5064 I feel you. My family been through something similar. My late father was previously in the civil service and he work there for over a decade. He has constantly given his best for his job. He speaks, read and write Malay fluently, but the issue was he was constantly being instructed by his superiors to teach and pass down the job knowledge to new Malay recruits. Over time, he starts to notice he was always doing the same job and hardly gets any promotion, while the new recruits he was assign to guide was later promoted so much faster and has since became his superior. Because his salary hardly increase without promotions, we were so desperate when the time has come when my sister needed to further her education in university. We sold our house just to pay for my sister's university education, and move out to start renting places for our family to stay for over another decade without a home. I still remember that day we sold our only home, my mum was in tears. On that day, i remember my dad told us, "Never Again". He then left the civil service, and re-started as a low level bell boy in a 5 star hotel. His work ethics never changed, and he work hard while studying part time for a Hotel management degree, and work all his was up to eventually be a GM of another 5 star hotel and we then had enough to buy a new property for our family which we can call home again. During his struggle, i remembered the countless times he told our family at this same "kiasu" stereotypes or racial slurs directed at him when he was busting his ass to work his way up the hotel management while studying part time for his degree. None of his colleagues or friends know about his goals of wanting to buy a home, of wanting enough money to send his children to university, of not letting down my mother again. He just kept working hard. My point is, the people that always call us slurs such as being "kiasu", are the once who are usually less hardworking or less successful in their own life. We can even see, Malaysians calling Singaporeans "Kiasu", but we never read or heard of Japanese or Taiwanese giving similar stereotypes to Singaporeans. Similar to the West, the middle class calling the rich "FILTHY Rich" when it was their hard work that took them to success. There is always some negativity when someone works hard to eventually be successful. Here we are today, with so many slurs being thrown at us such as "Pendatang" or "Type C" or whatever. Worst, we are now even "educated" as to what being a "true" Malaysian is. The irony!! All I can say is the more successful you get, the more enemies you make. Accept it and move on.

Anwar & Mahathir can actually be considered someone of the same calibre but in different domain, LkY is seen as a statesman protecting the interest of Singaporean, Asian, & subsequently Chinese hence the West like to look to them to talk about Issue in China. Whereas Mahathir & Anwar is on the domain of Islamic world and they seem lesser of an Asian leader but a Muslim one because Islam always overshadow any topic they touches on. Besides that, Mahathir or Anwar didn’t do much in leading the Islamic world, in fact Professor Tajudin argue that the time Anwar spent in prison for more than 10 years due to Mahathir is time wasted which has allowed PAS to take the driver seat. Hence they would seem less capable when compare to Lee Kuan Yew who always try to steer its country into a diplomacy of consistency because they are a small nation that require trust to function or investor would fled.
Basically Singapore has become the light for China when they are in turmoil such as the visit by Deng Xiao Ping to Singapore where many lessons were brought back to China. What have the Islamic world learn from Malaysia?
      Nothing.
In fact, it is almost like Malaysia existence is to prove Islamic value are unfair in essence where Kafir value are brought to life in Bumiputera terms while Jizya is apparent from the quota system ranging from university to companies 30% hire. However this also prove China capability as a 2000years capitalist society as imply by the Ali Baba term.
I wonder if there is any lesson we can derived from the rich history between Malaysia & China to reshape and fix the world. Whether Western led world order is unsustainable but the Malaysia China one where one is seen as host while the other is seen as guest. As long as we agree that every nation in the world need to retain its 70% “original” population so that they don’t always have to fight the question of impending existential threat, I am sure once they feel secured & relief mentally, it would not be difficult after for the local populace to come up with an impartial policy that see everyone as equal citizen (eg without the need for Bumiputera), thus marrying the best of both world from governance in the West & the East. This is much better than play pretend that we are one people when we are obviously not. I thought we are in the age of global village?
Confuciunism has the idea of 天下大同Great unity where we seek commanality but at the same time remain different, 同中求異 異中求同. Unity in diversity.

    1. I beg to differ. China is very Xi centric until his era is gone. This is evident from the change of the maximum 2 terms presidency.
    2. The United States under Democrats has been avoiding direct war and not like what you guys said.
    3. Both of you are very wrong on young chinese ethnic Malaysians less leaning towards China. You are right, those over 60 years have sentimental values towards China. This also being recently due to the rise of tiktok. Same goes to those under 30 years old. Most of them are in favor of the China values, also due to tiktok. And recently, the influx of many Chinese to Malaysia.

The US and Nato has provoked the security of Russia by trying to let Ukraine to join as member of NATO which means US missiles can be deployed in Ukraine closer to Moscow. On top of that the US has supported all the Ukraine N@zi groups like Azov Battalion, Right Sector and C14 to kill ethnic Russians in the Donbass region of Ukraine since 2014 and they do not respect the people's referendum of the Donbass region to break away from Ukraine to join Russia. If you understand their politics, Xi still needs to be selected by the 7 different parties in CCP. To make it simpler to understand, if US has deep state, then surely China has something similiar for someone to rule behind the scene as you have no idea how many of their scientist has been killed. That is why Huawei CEO Ren Zheng Fei say they don’t let their scientist go abroad to do any speech or receive any awards, motto is to stay anonymous & low profile. MH370 is one of such examples, the official story is the plane went missing but it is an open secret now the US has something to do with it because the plane hold more than 20 semiconductor specialist from US enroute to Beijing & subsequently Tianjin to setup R&D center. Both US & China probably have classified information of Mh370 but to disclose it would means to escalate this into an all out war which neither side do not want, yet.

Why did China not intervene in the 1998 Indonesian anti-Chinese riots?
By 1998, the vast majority of Chinese Indonesians were Indonesian citizens.
As such, China couldn't do very much as China has a long standing policy of non interference with other countries’ domestic affairs.
My mother, who was very scared, called the Chinese embassy and asked what the Chinese government was going to do. This is what the Chinese embassy person told her.
We had to abandon our home and the whole housing complex in West Jakarta was looted and burned down. Thankfully none of the female was raped.
Our family moved to Australia. My family has been in Indonesia for generations. My father is the 5th generation born in Indonesia. My mother is the sixth.
In fact, my father’s family is a peranakan (mixed) Java-Chinese family from 4 generations ago.
Our extended families include Javanese, Batak, Padang, and even a white American through marriages. Many are Muslims.
Yet, we are still seen as exclusive, non patriotic, perpetual foreigners, pendatang (new comers), corrupt, gamblers, etc etc.
I will teach my descendants this history. Never again will they live in Indonesia.
The whole place can go to hell for all I care.

Why not the Chinese in Malaysia do the same. Why must the Chinese in Malaysia wants their own Chinese schools and speak their own language. Because all these places you speak of treat all the races in their country the same. They don't practice different treatments. And sincerely, if there are no vernacular schools, how many nons can actually get a tertiary education? Public universities only offers a minimal placement to non-Muslims, which leaves most nons private universities as their only option. And these are very pricey. Most would aim for scholarships , and this means you have to be very competitive. Chinese vernacular schools improves competition among their students, (to the point the stress can be toxic). But at the end of the day, it's a chance for a brighter future.

Indonesian Chinese 11 million. Thailand Chinese 7.1 million. Malaysian Chinese 6.8 million. US Chinese 5.5 million. Singaporean Chinese 3.1 million.
May 1998 Indonesian racial riots, the Chinese sent 3 navy vessels to rescue around 200 Chinese nationals, and declare the event as internal problem. China sent 3 ships, while Singapore provided a country. They did not look upon the Chinese who holds the nationality of other countries as one of their own, so they won't come to anyone's rescue simply because of ethnicity. Although they do have the habit of trying to claim the Chinese ancestry of most successful people around the world. If you succeed, it's because of your ancestors from China and their Chinese DNA hence China can shamelessly claim undue credit for other people success. However, if you fail that's because of you...
Just look at the Gaza conflict, where one of the hostage taken by Hamas is 50% Chinese. Yet the flood of messages were simply serve them right for emigrating to another country.
Singaporean Chinese does include a lot of those who seek refuge in Singapore during May 1998, as well as many Malaysian Chinese who feels like they're 2nd class citizen within their own country. I don't think Singapore actively tries to poach, rather passively accepted many.
I think it's best to not leave it to the mercy or the magnanimity of others for the protection of anyone.
