I love the features, great demo Henning! As a Jimmy Page fan I totally see how the dual feature would be implemented but as a musician I would love a Dual Comp feature that didn't distort as well ala Andy Timmons for that sort of tone as well. I'm sure this can be done through a firmware update. Always appreciate the honesty and practicality focus with these demos and why I keep coming back, cheers!
I feel the need to upgrade my old Dyna Comp from the 70's. I've been considering the Universal Audio Max Preamp and Dual Compressor, Stacked Cali 76, T.C. Electronic Hyper Gravity, EHX's Platform Stereo Compressor/Limiter Pedal as well as a few others ...(and now this?!) Any suggestions? I'm feeling an overwhelming amount of choices. I'm leaning toward the MAX. I want something that has the ability to blend in the dry signal....not sure if the UA Max is capable of that. Have to check. Anyhow Henning, great intro to compression for the uninitiated!
same problem here. My current choices are the 1176 but I also like the Cali 76. But I also want a better drive pedal and this could achieve both into a Tonex.

16:17 Impeccable 'Black Dog' cover! Which just makes sense, because you've got a black doodlenoodle-animals-at-the-end. But in all seriousness, a fantastic explanation of compression, and you dialed in some absolutely perfect tones! 👏👏👏Sehr gut! Danke gern!
i can hear the slightly driven signal in your tone in every mode but i cant reach that black dog tone with the dual with mine :D what am i doing wrong? im using a single coil pickups maybe?
I totally agree with you. UAFX need to have a rethink. I see that it has now been drastically reduced in price. Could it be a MK 2 is on the way? One would hope so.
Just pulled my Sweetwater card out and purchased this pedal….so I can get the black dog sound. Not that one of my 40 OD pedals couldn’t achieve it. History man, History. So not really. I purchased one today and decided to watch TH-cam videos until it gets here.
My problem with most of the compressors I had and tested is the loss of the "highs" ´/ sparkle (besides a certain amount of noise.). I notice that espacially playing the ST62 Kloppmann single coil of my strat. Many of the compressors seem to kill all lot of the highs so my strat sounds rather dull. There was only one exeption: the old 'Diamond Effect Pedals Compressor' ( unfortunately the rate of compression is rather limited in this unit). So how about the UA in this video? (am open to suggestions)
Yep that's a thing. If you are not trying to get authentic 1176 style sound I would suggest checking out optical compressors like Orange Kongpressor (has "chime" knob) and Thorpy Fat General (treble knob). Optical compressors like these are also extremely silent.
My Donner Ultimate Comp mini compressor pedal has a normal and treble switch. You get quite a lot of high frequencies back. But I can't say how good the pedal in general is. But it's cheap, well built in a metal enclosure, and it compresses the sound, gives it a little oomph. Works for me, especially since I don't really want an expensive compressor on my board, because I don't really use it much.
Even opto compressors later the tone on the top a bit it seems. I don’t think treble knobs are the point , it won’t add back the harmonics that it takes ruins. I tried comps with distortion for the sake of sustain but it always will take the top end hair and shift it and make the sound midrangey. I also don’t like this effect. I can’t seem to find a pedal that adds sustain in an amp like way. I still fin the overall character is the same but delays a tad bit slower. I’d love a pedal that lets the onset of the notes also last longer like Mesa boogie amp compression. Adding a pedal just lets your notes fade out in a similar fashion but slightly longer and I don’t find that meaningful. I think compressor pedals are better for just making your tone sound denser and that’s about it
@@artaragon7894 it's on my board right now lol. It's pretty good. I'm using it more to emulate the sound of a cranked power section since I obviously can't use my giant ass 50 and 85 watt amps that loud in most situations. It's sitting post gain pedals at the end of my noise gate's loop and before my modulation pedals and it pretty convincingly sounds like a tube power amp on the edge of distortion.
@@artaragon7894 I'm doing it like that because my primary drive pedal is a ColorSound Power Boost which only does its thing properly when it's the first pedal in the chain. That said, it's not only super responsive to your volume knob, but with the volume rolled back it's a really good sounding EQ'ed clean tone. So if I want a compressed clean sound, I'll turn on the compressor pedal and roll my guitar's volume knob down to, like, 4.
This is my take on these new UAFX pedals: I'm sure they're great. But they are based off UA rehashing their previous pedals that they released a few months ago and they are less feature packed than the originals. 1/3 of the feature instead of 100% of the features. Separating their Compressor MAX pedal and the reverb modes of the Golden Reverberator. WHY? Just because some consumers max out their spending at £200? But for £300 you'll get the full deal, the full-feature packed pedal, not the gimped 1/3 version. So while I see loads of positive comments about these, I urge potential buyers to look at their better models. I wish UA would get busy on their inevitable Marshall amp pedal releases and other NEW pedals options like giving as fuzzes or filters (Moog style, etc). Instead, it's just rehashing what you may have already bought, again and again. Not cool.
Get yourselves a KONGpressor (by Orange). It's amazing, not expensive, relatively clean, subtle and easy to use. Most joy for the money. Best pedal ever for me.
My biggest problem with UA is how TH-camrs will skip over shortcomings on their products to help sales….probably because they are paid. The dream 65, Woodrow, and the ruby are the worst guitar purchases I ever made. I sold my kemper to get into pedals….started by buying all 3 of these…they didn’t work together (ask UA if you don’t believe me)….noise was out of control. Nobody said there was no effects loop…etc. for life, I will actually hate this company and write these. I think they ar3 also going after origin effects here too….and they (UA) are sadly short of that.
I talked about all their shortcomings… don’t generalize. And again, they are NOT meant to be stacked… they are amp pedals and not drives. You were trying to use them in a way that just doesn’t work with any modeler.
The amp pedals are good. Others are not worth it. Maybe the MAX can be used as a fancy stereo splitter. But I think Henning was clear about the shortcomings. Mainly that would be the lack of midi and lack of headphones outs. If you need an all in one, you can get a fractal for less money than 4 uafx pedals...
I just bought a gently used one and I love it. It sounds sooooo good going into a Friedman dirty Shirley
Right off the bat, your explanation of compression is the easiest to comprehend that I’ve heard.
