As a teenager in the 90s, I was in a hip-hop band. We mainly used Roland JV and XP gear. When I programmed the rhythm on the good old XP-80 synthesizer and tried to make it sound like the hit songs of that time, I really beat it up, hoping for a fuller sound. But no matter how hard I tried, it still sounded thin. A few years later, I learned that to achieve that sound, you need a 1176 compressor. Your videos are awesome! Love it!
I didn't understand the input-output knobs before, but it's actually very easy to understand now! Thank you! It's just to make the sound go through the threshold and then we re-adjust with the output knob! 🔥
I was searching for some ideas on how to tame hard consonants that sounds harsh and clipping after applying compression. I used an Waves emulation of 1176 even though that I have got the UAD version also. I am very happy with my vocal not disappearing like before when the beat comes in. Gives a consistent voice this one with the right settings. But the T and some S came up also. Will appreciate it if someone suggested a technique, a plugin or some tutorial link.
The attack times are much slower than on paper due to it being a feedback type compressor. I tested several 1176 plugins including waves (both colours) and arturia on slowest attack settings + fastest release, with a flatly clipped kick signal and all of em seem to respond within the 10-15ms range where the "attack" effect rounds off. About 4ms for both settings on fastest.
For me, the main button is the output Level. I like to get this where I am running the 1176 at the optimal level. Everyone seems to overlook the importance of getting everything right at the output level. I'm constantly checking the output Level. 😀😀
Chris I’m having a problem with my mixes. The group bus for my mix the lead and back up is it suppose to be mono or stereo. cuz I can’t add the plugins to each track it starts freezing and lagging 😢. I’d be happy if I can get help on this
I got here because I don't understand why my UAD 1176LN (legacy) keeps clipping now that I am pushing it a little harder than I used to. I am getting about the same gain reduction as you are demonstrating here. The clipping seemed subtle, but now that I notice it, it is disturbing my mixes. When I turn back to 3 - 4 db reduction it's OK, but not much fun there. I am also not definitely not clipping my audio channel. - Or am I mistaking it for a 'pleasing' tube overdrive??
Silly question - you said the plugin is a FET compressor, and the Stam Hardware is a tube unit I believe, so you’d get a little more character out of hardware yes?
No. And it wouldn't make very much sense, as you wouldn't get the same output level. You can, however, create a midi-loop and use the input knob as midi value trigger, reverse the polarity of that trigger and use that trigger to then control the output knob. Or just automate it.
Ok so great video as always! SUPER nerdy question. I know the 1176 attack is less than 1ms, evan at its slowest, but its doesnt sound like it.Sounds more like 10-20ms at its slowest. As it is a feed back compressor there seems that there is 'something' delaying the signal in the detector circuit. What do you think, is there a way to measure it?
I use my BLA 17 outboard gear which is their version of an 1176 along with their Bluey compressor they give everything something special. As far as a plugin version I use TRS Black 76. I put it almost everything 😉
BLA Seventeen isn't as good as the UAD plugins IMHO - it doesn't sound right - but the Bluey is awesome - what a tone machine! (with reversed (mis-wired) attack and release controls as per CLA's unique accident.)
Do you use an preamp before the hardware 1176? I am asking because i have an wa-76 and when i use it on my mixes, i always need to crank the input till the MAX to get even 3db gain reduction. Adding a preamp before it helps tremendously but it feels kinda wrong tbh
Are you feeding it from your daw? Can you increase the output so you are feeding it a hotter signal? 1176 gets a bit noisy if you crank the input or output.
HI. Another interesting video on compressors, I'm gonna finally understand them! lol! And, the big surprise, une voix francophone (I'm from Québec)! And I feel she's a Quebecer too, am I right?
I just started using it more on the Bass mannnnn it makes it more beefy!!!!!!! I gotta try it on drums I love the SSL Comp on drums but I will give this 1176 a try!!!
Great video! Can you do one on the ART VLA II compressor? I have one and I'm still learning how to use it. I have it on my vocal line but I'm going to try it with other things too.
The best trick with the Pro VLA II (as a tracking compressor) is to unlink and then daisy-chain the two channels - that way you can set the first channel fast to grab the peaks and then the second channel slow to act as a poor man's LA-2A. A two stage fast/slow compressor setup in a single box.
Great video! How do you move both the input and output knob at the same time?? Are you using a daw controller of some kind or is it possible without? Best regards Otto
Actually, the attack and release time act in a different way on the 1176 ... All the way left (1) is the quickest attack and (7) the slowest. Didn't you read the manual ? lol This compressor is the only one built like that, Don't know why but now y'all know 🙌🏽 Besides, your video is on point 👌🏽
Sorry fella, but this is some fake news over here. Quote from 1176 Manual listed on Universal Audio Website: “The attack time is fastest when the Attack knob is in its fully clockwise position, and is slowest when it is in its fully counter-clockwise position. When a fast attack time is selected, gain reduction kicks in almost immediately and catches transient signals of very brief duration, reducing their level and thus "softening" the sound.”
Why is it always drums used on these kind of tutorials, or guitars. How about sax or strings or solo brass, or just something different for a change. Love your channel Chris, so please don't get me wrong, but drums all the time? It's not just you but Spectralayers tutorial; yep, drums. 🙂 Love yer deep, lol
I'm a drummer, so I'm biased LOL! Seriously, drums are often used to talk about compression mainly because they are percussive, lots of defined transients so very easy to hear compression, and the tone shaping it does, when using drums.
You failed to mention that you can use combinations of the ratio buttons - not just single or "all in" (all-in was never officially supported in hardware BTW!) so if you depress the 12 and 4 buttons, you get 16:1 for example. This was the case with hardware 1176s as well. You also didn't mention that your Stam 1176 has a tube output stage so it's not a 1176 clone as such.
Actually, the combination of 4:1 and 20:1 will activate All Buttons, which btw, is in the 1176LN Hardware manual. For the other combinations, I actually don't know, to be honest. ,For this video, I kept it to the important things to understand enough about the 1176 to be able to work with. Now, the different features that the Stam 76D+ is not important for this video, I already made a dedicated video on the Stam 76D+, and this video is not about clone vs original, or plugin vs hardware, that will be for another time :-)
For those interested, in 2022 Donner introduced a very impressive 1176 based design, the [35! dollars] *Donner LAX COMP Compressor/ Limiter* . There is simply no OL influencer backing whatsoever surrounding this product and it's a shame because I own a LAX COMP. It sounds excellent. It's 100% analog. Contains one SM (surface mount) LM3080 transconductance IC, four SM transistors, and 80 other SM capacitors and SM resistors.

I’ve looked at a lot of videos in my life and this one showed me nuggets i never knew about. Good video
Now I know how to use this plugin. Thanks Chris!!!
That's great! You're welcome!
thanks a lot. i only used standard daw compressors before and was a bit lost with the 1176. tyou clarified it for me.

My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Thank you, Chris. That was a great and clarifying review of a classic. The examples were perfect.
Glad you enjoyed it, Jorge!
Thanks for sharing! How is the plugin performance compared to its hardware unit?
Back to Basics. I love this kind of content
Thanks :-)
Best video on 1176. Thanks!
Wow, thanks!
Best Tutorial about Compression. Follow. 🖤
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!
What's the second compressor you use for vocals when you chain two compressors?
I Like how you work on those wheels
It never fails. I always learn something valuable from you Chris! Bon Jour.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thx for sharing.
Question to you. What do you think of KLARK TEKNIK KT76 hardware compressor.
Thx and I hope to hear from
You.

Such a great video on compression, thank you.
Glad you liked it!
I was a bit confused which compressor does he use first the slower one or the faster one?

The 1176 is sometimes as an amp and sometimes as a recovery. happy new year.

100000% YES use a preamp before the hardware!! I use a Cranborne EC2 to go into one but you can use any cleaner preamp if you want lower noise
@@officialdiomer Thanks for the reply :)
I have the Warm Audio wa76 that I use for my vocals along with other compressors
That's pretty cool!

Hi Chris, could yo recommend me a tube preamp similar to presonus bluetube dp where you have a saturation knob. My bluetube died
